I was just doing an online trivia quiz and one of the answers mentioned that zebra crossings are so-called because the black and white stripes resemble a zebra's coat. I can't believe that not once in my 40-odd years on this planet did I twig the connection!

What else have I missed...? Confused

I know A-Z is the brand of map books but it's the only link I could think of.

It doesn't seem like a stupid question to me. But then I don't even know where Yorkshire is Grin

PorpentinaScamander · 22/12/2018 20:48

I mean... I know it's in England. Just don't know where!

halfwitpicker · 22/12/2018 20:50

Wtaf the clue is in the name with some of these : 'hold your horses' I. E wait?! HmmConfused

Best one is not knowing the arrows go up and down in a lift. Don't answer this, but how have you got through life?!

halfwitpicker · 22/12/2018 20:51

I was once told by a girl I knew that when deep sea trawlers went fishing for skate the fishermen sometimes used the shape of the fish for their own gratification.
That apparently was the source of the phrase ‘get your skates on.’

And I thought I was naive....

64ChewsBrains · 22/12/2018 20:51

Yy that’s what I mean, you couldn’t cover it all in a format designed for one city.

I’m enjoying the idea that it’s to do with it starting with a Y though Grin

PinkPanther27 · 22/12/2018 20:52

I was watching the film inglourious bastards with my DH and when Brad Pitt started scalping someone I was horrified and shrieked "Why is he doing that?" DH said "he said earlier he wants his nazi scalps" and I said "I thought he said he wanted his Nazi scouts". I meant scouts as in an army of fighters but he took me to mean cub scouts and couldn't stop pissing himself, him and his mate still laugh about it.

italiancortado · 22/12/2018 21:00

An A-Z is just a map book. And you get towns, cities and bigger.

MaggieFS · 22/12/2018 21:14

I suspect that origin of the word posh is about as true as golf standing for gentlemen only, ladies forbidden

PrincessDando · 22/12/2018 21:16

Known as a 'Backronym' Maggie FS which is just about the best word ever!

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 22/12/2018 21:19

Maybe there's a staff only/management offices on the top floor? Or maybe that's a lift that goes up to the helipad on the roof?

Thanks but nothing else up and lift only goes down. Maybe it doesn't actually matter if you press an up or down button at all anywhere...

Which reminds me - did I read on here that the lift close button actually does nothing but is just there to make you think you're speeding things up?

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 21:32

No, i imagine they just ordered the same standard lift buttons, with two buttons set in one metal mount. A lot of top floors only have down.

ChesterGreySideboard · 22/12/2018 21:34

what sort of pigs eat roast beef and why?

Pigs will eat anything.
Great way to dispose of a human body.

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 21:35

My favorite thing on this thread is the people misunderstanding other people's posts and incorrectly correcting them, only making them sound thicker Grin.

MaggieFS · 22/12/2018 21:40

@PrincessDando Backronym -love that!

BlancheM · 22/12/2018 21:57

I was about to say the same, puts! Shame they can't just stick to it being a light hearted bit of fun

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 22/12/2018 22:01

We are united in our thickness. Like a big custard.

Ok I need to stop drinking.

3out · 22/12/2018 22:31

I saw a new one on fb the other day saying that ‘break a leg’ is said before an audition because if you break a leg then you end up in a cast (in the cast). I don’t buy it.

Belindabauer · 22/12/2018 22:47

3out I think it refers to being so successful on stage that you have to keep bowing and therefore bending your legs so much they feel like they have been broken. It's said to performers to mean be good on stage.

SnailMailFan · 22/12/2018 22:59

My 17 year old daughter suddenly realised today, that the mum in the song ‘I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus’, was kissing Daddy, and not, as she’d thought ‘a bit slutty’.

AlanThePig · 22/12/2018 22:59

It was only about two years ago dh realised New York was a coastal city. I was all the more amused because he's a big titanic buff so not sure how he thought it would dock.

Popcicle123 · 22/12/2018 23:12

When I was17 my mum & I were walking beside a river. There were a few people feeding the ducks & swans. One of the swans was being quite aggressive to the ducks & I said why would they do that to their babies! My mum just looked at me like wtf & started laughing. When she explained the ducks were not the swans babies I said but in the story the ugly duckling, he turns into a beautiful swan at the end. BlushBlushBlushthink I missed a bit at the beginning of the story Smile

ColdCottage · 22/12/2018 23:19

I read in the paper last week that a large number of people don't realise that the speed limit on a duel carriage way is 70mph

ChesterGreySideboard · 22/12/2018 23:40

You say ‘break a leg’ because it is bad luck to wish actors good luck, iyswim.
Nothing to do with actually breaking legs.

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 23:42

I heard someone on a politics show say a recent poll on brexit revealed some people have misunderstood a 'no deal' brexit to mean rejecting brexit altogether and remaining in the EU.
