OMG I'm thick as mince

I was just doing an online trivia quiz and one of the answers mentioned that zebra crossings are so-called because the black and white stripes resemble a zebra's coat. I can't believe that not once in my 40-odd years on this planet did I twig the connection!

What else have I missed...? Confused

Hawaii is not where I thought it was for years. It's west of the mainland USA, not in the Caribbean Sea.

I wondered why so many corporals in the army were called lance

Arthur2shedsJackson · 22/12/2018 19:32

I was once told by a girl I knew that when deep sea trawlers went fishing for skate the fishermen sometimes used the shape of the fish for their own gratification.
That apparently was the source of the phrase ‘get your skates on.’

And I thought eimenem was m and m

The singer Will I am spells William when put together

eefa658 · 22/12/2018 19:41

My ultimate 'Christ I'm thick' was when I forgot that dragons didn't exist. I was having a baby brain moment and was very shocked when DH told me that they didn't live on earth at the same time as dinosaurs??!?!!! I couldn't stop thinking about it for about 3 days.

pinkstripeycat · 22/12/2018 19:43

Diagon Ally in Harry Potter is diagonally

Ooooh I didn’t realise that either and now I am excited and am going to share with everyone else who doesn’t yet know and I’m sure there are loads of us

Reading these makes me feel really thick but not quite as thick as my neighbour who once asked me if I had an A to Z of Yorkshire!

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:04

I don't get the Yorkshire one. Am I think or do I need to get out of London more?

I once had a massive argument with my sis because I was AdamAnt Wink that the name 'John' was onoy ever a nickname for Jonathan and all men called John (including our Granddad) will have 'Jonathan' on their birth certificate.

I also had a very frustrating argument with my partner who thought (as a grown man) that actors only do fake kissing on TV and don't ever actually snog.

"But the why on the top floor of the local hospital does one pair of lifts have a down button and the other an UP!?"

Maybe there's a staff only/management offices on the top floor? Or maybe that's a lift that goes up to the helipad on the roof?

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:06

*thick!

Veronicat · 22/12/2018 20:09

My grandad had me convinced Bungalows were called that as the builders bunged a low roof on them. Grin

italiancortado · 22/12/2018 20:12

not quite as thick as my neighbour who once asked me if I had an A to Z of Yorkshire!

What's wrong with that?

64ChewsBrains · 22/12/2018 20:17

Surely Will.i.am = William isn’t really possible not to notice though

64ChewsBrains · 22/12/2018 20:20

I pronounced “archipelago” as if it contained the word “arch” until I was about thirty. Just hadn’t ever picked up on it being spoken aloud with the ark- sound. Was working in an office surrounded by bright, wordy people when I realised so felt even more thick in that context.

PorpentinaScamander · 22/12/2018 20:37

Surely the A-Z of Yorkshire is to do with Yorkshire starting with Y. Therefore there is no Z? That's the only thing I can think of.

Purplealienpuke · 22/12/2018 20:42

I knew someone (in her 30s) who asked if chickens had 4 breasts because you can buy 4 in a pack 😂.

64ChewsBrains · 22/12/2018 20:42

Is it just that an A-Z is usually for a city, whereas Yorkshire is an enormous area so it wouldn’t really work?

(disclaimer: I have never owned an A-Z, so not sure if they do cover bigger areas sometimes)

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:42

Yeah but A-Z is just the brand name of the map books

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:43

Yes i thought it must be something like that 64chews. Yorkshire is a big place but don't think it is a stupid question

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:44

...unless we've missed something...

64ChewsBrains · 22/12/2018 20:44

This post has reminded me dh thought duckbilled platypuses (platypi?!) were fictional! As discovered when there was one featuring on an advert a while back!

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:46

Oh wait I think I got it

PutsFootInIt · 22/12/2018 20:48

An a-z of yorkshire would have to be about a foot thick because it's so big?
