I'm having last minute doubts about what we're getting for DS!

What are you getting for yours?

DS has StickBots and has made some great animations with them!

Could he do animations on a £200 laptop or is that madness also?

Is a £200 laptop basically a word processor?

Birthday (Monday just gone) - Xbox One S
Christmas - model railway set

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 22:56

Sorry, that should have said:

Iggity I saw that coding wand set, it looks good doesn't it?

Laptop wise my ds broke my laptop using is for gaming, a normal one just isn't up to it. He then saved up and built his own PC with gaming spec, he is a bit older though (13) I know a console may not be as educational but definitely the cheaper option gaming wise.

We got a switch as a whole family present last year and they knew they wouldn't get much else with it, grandparents and an aunty bought a couple of games. It's been a massive hit.

However if it's out of budget I wouldn't stress about it, I'm sure he will love what you have got so far.

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 23:01

I could maybe justify getting a console if it was for both of them I suppose but OMG they'd fight over it!!

I'd have to put DD's present away till her birthday but that's doable.

Hmm...

Not really a main present this year as there’s nothing big he wants / needs so he’s got a couple of Lego sets, a PS4 game, a vans hoodie and some (small, light) dumbbells (he wants to get ‘ripped’ Grin)

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 23:05

I dunno. He really, really wants tech. I haven't got him tech.

He got his phone for his last birthday.

He'd be happy with a cheap convert-your-phone-to-VR set, which I almost got him, but then I realised I'm not comfortable with him spending so much time cut off from reality completely (which he will do, he gets into things obsessively!)

I can't find anything else that's tech but affordable that he'd like.

The Harry Potter coding wand kit looks awesome, but it'd be his main present, and it's a risk - if he doesn't take to it then it'd be a shame. And if we're going to spend £70 on something that's basically only a one trick pony (however cool) it's not a huge stretch to 3 times the price for something that has infinitely more possibilities, if you know what I mean?

10yo DD3
Harry Potter Lego 2 big sets from Santa
Snitch
Trivial Pursuit
Lots of books
HP wand coding thing
HP Cluedo

EnglishRose1320 · 19/12/2018 23:12

I thought mine would argue over it and I'm not going to lie and say they never have but it has been far less than I feared. Over the initial Christmas period it was lots of playing as a family. After that a little up and down establishing sharing but works pretty well now. Youngest ds has s turn first, oldest later and all play together at weekends.

I get your concerns about the vr head set- it's why we went for the switch and not tablets for each of them.

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 23:20

JFC is the Switch really nearly £300?!!

OP posts:
wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 23:23

Dare I ask how much the games are?

OP posts:
Flower777 · 19/12/2018 23:27

An Occulus Rift

SingingSands · 19/12/2018 23:27

Drum kit.

I know! I'm leaving now!!

wakemewhenitsallover · 19/12/2018 23:32

SingingSands you're brave Grin

DS would LOVE a drum kit as it happens. But our house has thin walls. I did look at electronic kits that come with headphones but the decent ones seemed to be £££

A VR headset - that cost £15 Grin It was a reduced deal so worth more and, more importantly, the only thing he’s asked for.

Well, he’s also asked for a switch but unless our Family Fund voucher comes in by Friday that’s not going to happen!

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 19/12/2018 23:46

Dis is 11 he's getting a laptop. He wants a gaming one but they're mega expensive.
He's getting one that was £300 in Black Friday it's got good spec but not gaming spec.
He's 11 he's not getting a £600-800 laptop!

littlebillie · 19/12/2018 23:51

Magic tricks

llangennith · 20/12/2018 00:00

Fifa19 for his Xbox. He's Yr6 and all the kids in his year have xboxes. Birthdays and Christmas are much cheaper since he turned 10 (he's 11 now) as he longer actually wants anything. He and his friends all think Nintendo Switch is rubbish.

HollySwift · 20/12/2018 00:01

I do also have an 11yo DS who is getting a laptop - primarily for school work to be honest as it’s all online at his secondary! It was £150 in Aldi but it’s still better than mine 😂

Juanbablo · 20/12/2018 03:59

Just turned 11yo ds1 asked for the Lego police station. So that's what we've got him.

NotCitrus · 20/12/2018 05:46

Ninjago lego.

Mine have Kindle Fires which were about 40 quid including protective cases. We have a family Xbox from CEx and the kids have acquired epic negotiation skills (3 kids, 2 controllers, strict rule that if there's fighting or yelling over it, it goes off for the rest of the day).

Lots of books as stocking fillers. Ds lives reading but is fussy, so hoping one will be a hit.

ragged · 20/12/2018 06:09

10" Tablet (replaces one smashed just a week ago). Was supposed to be a phone, but may get one of those for free, anyway.

HotInWinter · 20/12/2018 06:24

Half a switch - shared with his brother.
Yes, you are talking £300 for a bundle with a game. And then £40-50 for another game.....

confusedofengland · 20/12/2018 07:07

The Xbox One S we got for DS1's birthday was from CEX & as new & it cost £190. However, we only paid about £90 of that from our own money, as we had other bits & pieces to trade in, so it's worth seeing if you have anything like that - old phone, DVD, laptop etc. You get more in store vouchers than in cash.

DoveSecret · 20/12/2018 07:12

PS4 with fifa 19. New football, goalie gloves, Bluetooth headphones, cheap digital watch, pj, nicknaks.
