One of my neighbours is a lovely old lady in her 80s.
She loves my OH and they dog walk together. He helps her with anything she needs and she knows she is welcome at our house for anything I think!
She's lovely and how is lime to be in my 80s!

But
She thinks I'm called val!
I'm not.
I'm not that old! 😂
I'm not that bothered and will
Happily answer to val but it's not my name....should I correct her or forget it and be val!?
It made me laugh today . (Unless the OH has another woman called val!)

My DM was always known as Pat in work, people heard her Geordie boss call her pet and they just assumed, being southerners, that he'd got it a bit wrong. Her name was Gladys, so she never corrected them.

TheFirstOHN · 18/12/2018 22:42

Reminds me of YouTube video.

katseyes7 · 18/12/2018 22:43

One of my mam's neighbours insisted on calling me Marian. l have no idea where that came from. My name begins with a K!!

Missingstreetlife · 18/12/2018 22:45

Mary might be kathleen, lots of people have a nickname, or an official name and a family one
I think val is someone from ops neighbours past, any other sign of Alzheimer's?

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 18/12/2018 22:45

My mum, from Christmas cards thought for 7 years that she had a male neighbor called Billy-Pat as that is how the Christmas cards are signed.

8 years after she moved in, she discovered it was a married couple, Billy and Pat.....

bunintheoven88 · 18/12/2018 22:49

There's a woman who comes into my work that has decided to call me 'Jess' even though her partner calls me by my actual name when she is standing right next to him! It's so odd, I don't know if she's doing it on purpose or not Hmm

brick10 · 18/12/2018 22:51

I called someone ( that to be fair I never had much dealings with very often) Keith for years and his name was Kevin. I was mortified when he corrected me about 12 years later. I asked him why he'd never told me and apparently he'd tried to correct me once - not that I remember of course! So he let me carry on. I was sooo embarrassed to say the least!

PavlovianLunge · 18/12/2018 22:51

When on job experience, I was asked if my name was Ian and I said that it was. My name isn’t Ian. Quite what possessed me, I have no idea.

Sidge · 18/12/2018 22:51

I’m in a situation like this.

I moved in here a year ago. My lovely neighbour introduced himself and his wife. I think he said they were Pete and Julie.

But I’m not exactly sure so for a year now I’ve avoided using their names in any shape or form. I do that thing where I go “hiiiii!”

I’ve addressed their Christmas card to “all at number 7” 😆

NoSquirrels · 18/12/2018 22:52

It's totally a thing. Chandler on Friends was Toby, wasn't he?
I'd never be able to correct anyone if they got it wrong. Serious props to the PP who corrected their boss in a public presentation!!

BrokenWing · 18/12/2018 22:52

A lady in the canteen at work calls me Wanda 😂. I am not called Wanda. First time I thought I'd misheard (I'm a bit deaf), second time as we were walking away someone said - did she just call you Wanda? 3rd time I told her my correct name, but Wanda has stuck. It has been going on for 6 years now.

I only visit the site a few times a year but she remembers my wrong name. It is just too embarrassing now to correct.

FortunaMajor · 18/12/2018 22:55

I have a very unusual name but my neighbour has decided I'm called Paige. I figured that as I KNOW her name is DEFINITELY either Andrea, Angela or Amanda, I should probably let it go.

Oh my god this thread is brilliant.

Hi Val!

I'm Jo to one of our older neighbours. The thing is, Jo actually lives next door. I guess we're both vaguely around the same age and blonde, but that's about the similarities. Jo is actually younger and a lot slimmer than I am, so I'm secretly pleased...

whyameyehere · 18/12/2018 22:57

Dh always seems to get called Paul by people, no idea why as his name doesn't sound anything like it!

DotForShort · 18/12/2018 22:59

We used to have two neighbours called Jim. For some reason, one of them decided that our dog’s name was also Jim. Grin I suppose he thought there weren’t enough Jims in the neighbourhood. Or it was just easier to assume that was the name everyone would answer to.

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2018 23:00

I knew someone who used to call me Marrianne. She even once asked if I was named after Marrianne in Sense and Sensibility ( we had a common love of books).

ChelseaBabbage · 18/12/2018 23:01

My ndn calls me by a short variation of my name. No one calls me that and I don't know where she got it from. I was resigned to being forever Carol instead of Carolyn but then she told new ndn on the other side. So now both neighbours call me the wrong name. Confused

Craftycorvid · 18/12/2018 23:02

DH is now forever known as ‘Roger’ to one of our friends. His name is nothing like Roger (I mean, what is?) And his actual name begins with a B. I have a slightly unusual name but one that’s also easy to get wrong. So I’m Muriel to quite a few people. Grin

bumblenbean · 18/12/2018 23:04

This reminds me of an incident on the bus last month when my mum and I bumped into a lovely old man who used to be our next door neighbour when I was growing up. He and his wife have extremely similar names (think along the lines of Lindsey and Lesley - there’s in fact only one letter different in the real names but too outing to be revealed as they are names ive never come across elsewhere!) and my mum always gets them mixed up. She turned to me smiling and said ‘oh bumblenbean you remember ....?’ And froze with a kind of rictus grin as it dawned on her she couldn’t remember if it was Lindsey or Lesley.

Luckily I saw her panic and swept in with a breezy ‘yes of course, how lovely to see you!’...

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 18/12/2018 23:08

Half the women at my tennis club call me Joanna even though my name is Joanne (it's a different name and not short for Joanna)
Apart from one, who calls me Jenny.
I actually answer to jenny, it's just easier

EchoCardioGran · 18/12/2018 23:11

I'm a Mel to most of the neighbours.Confused Not a clue why.
I will now strive to be the best Mel I can be Grin

KurriKurri · 18/12/2018 23:12

Yes definitely stay as Val. My XH was Brian for years with our elderly neighbour - I started calling him Brian in the end (he wasn't Brian)

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/12/2018 23:13

Hi Val! 👋 I’m Miranda! I mean, I’m not Miranda, obviously, but not a single one of DHs (of twenty years!) elderly relatives can seem to fathom that. I must somehow channel Miranda because THREE previous boyfriends elderly relatives also knew me as Miranda! My name is an unusual Russian/Romanian name and I guess Miranda was their best shot at it 🤷‍♀️
