Does Old Rose die at the end of Titanic?

I'd always thought that the scene at the end of film where she's asleep and the ship comes back to life and she goes back to the staircase and sees Jack, Mr Andrews etc was her just having a dream, but then someone recently said no she died and that's her 'going back to Titanic' and my mind was completley blown because alll these years I thought she was just dreaming! And then I thought well Jack did say that she was going go die 'old and warm in her bed' and she chucked the necklace into the sea so it makes sense after she's finally told her story ...

Is it maybe open to interpretation I wonder?

(And yes, I know this is random lol)

I also didn't realise this until my friend told me. I cried.

flyingdragonzog · 15/12/2018 22:43

I think she died

Aneira11 · 15/12/2018 22:44

I think she found her peace by reliving her story and passed away comfortably in her sleep. It was a lovely ending. Remember watching it 3 times when it was in the cinema...1998 😊

I always thought it was her dying and being reunited with jack and have had many a debate with People who think it’s a dream - the reference to how long she has waited and how old she must be surely points to her dying ?

Calvinsmam · 15/12/2018 22:46

I always thought it was sad she went back to the titanic to be with jack when she died.
Is her husband just alone?

7yo7yo · 15/12/2018 22:48

I cried when she threw the necklace overboard. I’d have pushed her
Over for that.

ManicUnicorn · 15/12/2018 22:49

I always just assumed she was dreaming, but yes her dying makes sense. She was 102 after all.

I was always under the impression she died at the end

Papergirl1968 · 15/12/2018 23:10

I always assumed she died. I loved the way she’s young again, and Jack was there waiting for her, along with everyone else from the Titanic who all started clapping.
Yeah, she was idiot to throw the necklace overboard though.
I seem to remember some reference to her husband having died by then.

BoswellandForshort · 15/12/2018 23:11

I always felt sorry for her husband. She builds a whole life with him but then when she dies she goes back to some guy she spent 3 days with? Harsh.

AcrossthePond55 · 15/12/2018 23:16

I agree that she died and went back to her one true love, Jack. I knew DH was the one for me the day we met, so I do believe in true love at first sight.

As far as Rose's husband, I don't think it's ever actually established that she was widowed, was it? For all we know he could have been a bastard and she divorced him. Or he could have divorced her, who knows?

bunintheoven88 · 15/12/2018 23:22

I'll give you bloody 'whoops' Rose Shock

CarlsRightEye · 15/12/2018 23:29

She died and all the people that died and jack were waiting for her. Makes me blub every time that bloody film!

OliviaStabler · 15/12/2018 23:35

To me she died and was reunited with Jack after she passed away.

ManicUnicorn · 15/12/2018 23:39

I imagine the scene in question is on YouTube, but it can't watch it even now without blabbing. But you see all the photos of her doing all the things she'd never have done had she not met Jack Sad

I always assumed she died and had my mind similarly blown when someone told me they thought she was just dreaming.

I've always thought it was a bit harsh on her husband if she has died and spends eternity with Jack who she knew for 5 minutes...

7yo7yo · 16/12/2018 00:16

Jack was a Cocklodger. Who liked porn.

OccasionallyIncomplet · 16/12/2018 00:32

Not to mention it has been proven scientifically - that both her and Jack could have fit on the door and both floated. They barely tried!

ScreamingValenta · 16/12/2018 00:36

The director has said it's up to the viewer to interpret the scene as they wish. I personally think she dies - 'an old lady, warm in her bed' who is being greeted in the afterlife by people who died on the Titanic.

knittedjest · 16/12/2018 00:42

She died. I always thought it was weird that she went to Jack instead of her presumably loving husband and son. Like damn girl, you knew him for all of three days, just how big was his penis that you want to spend the after life with him over your family?

ScreamingValenta · 16/12/2018 00:46

It's the afterlife, so Rose is not bound by the conventions of life. We see Rose joining Jack on the Titanic. There's another afterlife Rose joining her husband, but we don't see it because it isn't relevant to the film. In the afterlife, there are no limits to parallel existence.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 16/12/2018 00:53

I think she died. I was going to say what ScreamingValenta said about dying as an old woman in a nice warm bed.

Honeyroar · 16/12/2018 00:59

I watched it last night. She died in her bed after casually chucking the huge diamond, that could have set her family up for life, into the sea. Then she joined Jack back on Titanic and forgot all about her real life. And she so could've moved up on that board and got Jack on there too. She was a bit of a selfish bugger really!

MidniteScribbler · 16/12/2018 01:01

I find it hard to believe that all of the spirits of people on the Titanic were so invested in Rose and Jack that they waited 80 years to cheer them when she finally died. I'm pretty sure they have their own afterlives to be getting on with.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 16/12/2018 01:09

I don't think she dies, I thin she's just dreaming and the end is like a play when they all burst into applause. Also she was pretty spritely wandering around the boat deck chucking necklaces overboard just an hour or so earlier.

I only cry during the band playing as the ship goes down...
