Can a baby eat chilli?

DS is 11 months and is a really good eater, hasn’t turned his nose up to anything. Would it be ok to give him a bit of chilli con carne? It has red chillis, hot chilli powder and a bit of cayenne pepper in it (as well as a stock cube and seasoning so perhaps a bit salty?)

My children have always eaten (and loved!) chilli but will often dollop some yoghurt or soured cream in it to cool it down for them if it’s ended up hotter than intended.

I tend to use reduced salt stock and season with salt after serving if required so not sure about what the salt content would be looking like for you.

QueenNovo · 13/12/2018 16:25

Depends how much you want to deal with some truly horrifying nappies tomorrow.

gingajewel · 13/12/2018 16:25

Mine always did, I just put a dollop if yoghurt on the top!

That’s a good point Queen! Confused

I wouldn't give my 21 month old anything that had chilli in it..
Let alone chillies, hot chilli powder and cayenne pepper..

Why not?

Yes it's fine. Just don't add salt.

thaegumathteth · 13/12/2018 16:46

I’d cool it down with yoghurt but otherwise yes

Bigonesmallone3 · 13/12/2018 16:47

Because I don't want to have to deal with the nappies and potential tummy upset..
if that's the first times he's had spicy food it's quite a lot to contend with for an 11 month old..

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 13/12/2018 16:48

My only concern would be the salt content.

DonaldDucksTowel · 13/12/2018 16:48

Mine have all ate chilli since weaning
Although it’s not hugely spicy

M0reGinPlease · 13/12/2018 16:49

Absolutely, just introduce it slowly and in a small amount, as you would with any new food. No more likely to upset their tummy than anything else!

Ffsnosexallowed · 13/12/2018 16:52

Why wouldn't you?? There is no reason why it should upset their tummy.

Gileswithachainsaw · 13/12/2018 16:54

Go ahead. Mine ate chili and curry at that age

I just didn't make it too spicy.

Was fine

Iknowthatguy · 13/12/2018 17:08

I honestly have no idea why it would upset their stomach? It certainly didn't with mine.

cucumbergin · 13/12/2018 17:11

Mine would happily sample my curry at that age. I miss that - nowadays he won't touch anything with sauce.

mortifiedmama · 13/12/2018 17:12

Mine are anything I did. Including chili and curry. Made no difference to the nappies.

DarcieStarlight · 13/12/2018 17:16

Pretty sure that a lot of Indian kids are introduced to spiced dishes at a very young age so why would it cause an upset tummy?

halfwitpicker · 13/12/2018 17:16

Why not?

Steelesauce · 13/12/2018 17:19

Yep, all 3 of mine had chilli and curry from 6 months. Just added yoghurt to cool it down.

Camomila · 13/12/2018 17:29

I used to give chilli con carne to DS at that age, I used to stir yoghurt or cream cheese through his portion to make it less spicy.
We did BLW though so he probably didn't eat much.

He"s loved curry from about 18m.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 13/12/2018 17:42

Not if the sauce is from a jar, but if all fresh- a small spoonful mixed with yoghurt is fine.

Mine all had chilli from weaning stage and curry plus other spicy food too, no upset or horrific nappies 🤷🏻‍♀️

redsummershoes · 13/12/2018 17:47

totally fine.
dc loved it from young age.
as did hot (ish) indian curries or gulash.
spices are fine, but be mindful of the salt content.

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 13/12/2018 17:52

Thanks for all the reassurance! I didn’t give him any today but might offer him a small amount tomorrow (after buying some yoghurt or cream cheese, it’s not that hot but just to give it a creamier texture)
