New loo seat - wooden or plastic?

redfruitgum · 11/12/2018 10:56

So i'm going into town later to get a new loo seat.

Firstly, do I get a wooden one or a plastic one? Which is 1) most practical, and 2) comfortable?

Secondly, do I get a plain one or a fancy patterned seat? Are patterned loo seats naff looking?

Plastic. Wooden sounds unhygienic and could easily start to smell!

Theoryofmould · 11/12/2018 10:58

Plain. White. Plastic.

LordPickle · 11/12/2018 10:59

Plastic with a soft close lid 🙌🏼

SylviaAndSydney · 11/12/2018 11:02

What LordPickle said 👆🏻

So plastic and keep it simple then. I'll try and seek out a soft close lid.

Neither

White enamel

Sallygoroundthemoon · 11/12/2018 11:28

Plastic. Wooden is retro and grim.

redfruitgum · 11/12/2018 11:29

Enamel? Is that like a painted one?

Plastic I think
But special coating

Pricey but worth it

Def soft close!!

MorningsEleven · 11/12/2018 12:07

Plastic.

Theoryofmould · 11/12/2018 12:08

B&Q do a good, very well priced white, soft close one.

Vitalogy · 11/12/2018 12:11

Plastic with a soft close lid 🙌🏼 Our bathroom came with a soft close. It takes too long to close so I just push it down Grin. I like it down and closed before I leave the bathroom.

TheEmmaDilemma · 11/12/2018 12:14

Not wooden. It will eventually soak up the piss. Do you want that?

Daisy2315 · 11/12/2018 12:15

I agree don’t go for wooden

redfruitgum · 11/12/2018 12:28

Ok plastic it is then.

How about colour? Are funky patterned ones naff? Do I just go for a white one? What about traditional black seats?

Gotta be white. I don't dislike wooden either as they are varished/sealed. But definitely not patterned.

bobstersmum · 11/12/2018 12:41

Not wood unless you fancy a splintery bum!

MulticolourMophead · 11/12/2018 13:46

It's not just the seat I consider, it's the "feet" on the seat underside that rest on the toilet bowl. I've sat on seats that seemed good, but the feet were crap and the seat went sideways. The seat on the toilet in my current house is clearly an inexpensive one, but seems fairly solid. (Moved in a month ago and can't tell you where the seat was from.)

silkpyjamasallday · 11/12/2018 13:49

We've always had wood toilet seats, plastic ones make me think of grotty public loos. Wood ones are generally varnished, so piss won't sink in nor will it give you splinters. And they aren't as cold on your bum in the night.

Bigonesmallone3 · 11/12/2018 13:54

Plastic is much more hygienic

Bestseller · 11/12/2018 13:55

Plastic but a good solid one not the flimsy, bendy plastic

GummyGoddess · 11/12/2018 13:57

Plastic is more practical, wood is more comfortable.

If you like patterned ones then get one, I prefer white but my mum has a thing for sparkly glitter ones.

lynnepot · 11/12/2018 15:26

The wooden ones these days seem to have a resin gloss on them so they are both solid and hygenic. They can also be cleaned with bleach whereas bleach degrades plastic.

CrabbityRabbit · 11/12/2018 16:22

I have a wooden one and its lovely. Looms nice, comfy, solid and warm. It is also coated in something so totally smooth, no splinters and sealed/waterproof. I clean it with bleach and its fine.

Klobuchar · 11/12/2018 16:27

Wooden toilet seats are treated and don’t soak up piss or give you splinters and are more comfortable and durable than plastic ones.
