Inspire me with paint colours for my living room please!

About to repaint the living room due to some damp but stuck on what colour/colours to choose.

Currently pale grey (my fave colour) but bored of it now as grey is everywhere.

Think white will look cold as it’s a large room, south facing (edwardian property).

Like dark walls but again think I will tire of it as it’s so popular.

Was thinking of maybe a putty shade or a very pale green. Does that sound mad?

In the process of redocorating and trying to decide the same thing, I'm tempted by a kind of light browny type colour!

canigetaliein · 10/12/2018 23:59

Have you got any links? I can’t find an example of what i’m envisaging.

One of the lighter greens from Farrow and Ball.

Green ground looks nice.

One wall navy would be nice

AnotherPidgey · 11/12/2018 09:47

South facing tends to suit cooler tones. The greens are likely to be promising.

I love navy & have navy kitchen units but I think it’s the new grey so want to try & avoid as my house is in a conservation area so you are a little restricted with what you can do re the fireplaces, sash windows etc so everyone’s sofas, ovens, baths tend to be in the same position if that makes sense. Plus everyone has alcoves & shutters so when a paint colour is on trend you go into your neighbours grey lounge that looks the same as yours. I blame pinterest!

AnotherPidgey didn’t know that, any other colours that would work?

A tip, if you pick a farrow and ball colour, have it colour matched to Duluth flat matt. It has the same chalky finish as Farrow and ball and will save you a fortune.

Bluntness100 · 11/12/2018 09:53

Dulux!

PickAChew · 11/12/2018 09:59

Little greene greens for comparison. The pearl colour is rather lovely.

I'm painting my (small, Edwardian) living room in Farrow & Ball pink ground next week.

Thanks bluntness I’ve never actually used f&b just Mylands & Little greene. Mylands for the kids rooms as it’s meant to be super hard wearing & LG as that is what my high street diy shop stocks but happy to have Dulux colour matched & save £££.

Pick that pearl colour is lovely, going on the tester list.

I love the pale pinks astoundedgoat but DH won’t have it.

We have a warm white which works well but we have lots of woods and natural tones in it too to make it feel warmer. Seems to feel lovely and fresh in summer but cosy in winter. I do love f&b French Gray though. We have that in the spare room. We get it colour matched with Leyland paint.

Mildmanneredmum · 11/12/2018 10:24

I am a Child Of The Eighties. Dulux Soft Peach matt emulsion and Magnolia where you don't want the colour. Lovely and cosy, especially in the evenings!

canigetaliein · 11/12/2018 10:27

Can’t do magnolia, when we moved in the house was awash with yellow/beige woodchip 😱. Anything on that spectrum brings back bad memories.

Definitely get a Farrow and Ball - they're made for period properties! We have Cornforth White in our living room (Victorian house), but you could equally have Wevet or Wimborne White, neither of which is completely white (which is boring and too cold). If you like a pale green, Dimpse is lovely.

Please don't colour match at Dulux! We did this a few years ago to save £££ but ended up spending more to fix the problem. The colour just doesn't match 100% and there's no consistency if you buy another pot later that wasn't mixed at the same time. The paint quality also won't compare with F&B.

We've just painted our Edwardian living room in a lovely duck egg blue. Need to get rid of the horrible laminate in the new year at some point.

My friend has F and B Oval Room blue in a large west facing living room just like Dappledthings. It’s stunning .

thethirdbiscuiteer · 11/12/2018 13:27

This is Cornforth White (F&B)

canigetaliein · 11/12/2018 14:52

Blue could be an option, I’m going to spend £££ on testers aren’t I.

thethird that looks similar to what we have already, a pale grey. I do love grey 😥

found this image and like this colour, a greeny grey?

Oval room blue is beautiful. Rich and a bit warm without being ‘trendy’ and dark. The dark colours thing is lovely in winter but just seems oppressive in spring/summer.

FWIW, I think navy has been and gone. It looks like dark green is the ‘next big thing’ in trendy dark interiors.

Thirtyrock39 · 11/12/2018 15:01

I've just had ours redecorates in little Greene rolling fog and silt- really pleased with it

canigetaliein · 11/12/2018 15:01

I have a navy sofa & a blue chandelier (nicer than it sounds, found it 2nd hand in France) so need to be careful with too much blue.
