Why would anyone order from Waitrose online?

I'm a loyal Ocado customer but my head was turned by an offer from Waitrose online offering 20 pounds of my first three shops with them. I was not impressed, things missing on the delivery, the website is not user friendly and often freezes, it's a pain to add anything extra as a result, the choice of food is inferior and the ocado basics range is usually a few pennies cheaper than waitrose essentials so I wouldn't be saving money if it wasn't for the offer. Why do people order from them? I can't wait to go back to Ocado next week!

Because Ocado don’t deliver to our area so it’s the next best thing. Never had an issue with the website or missing items.

Sleepinghooty · 10/12/2018 11:26

Because I'm not keen on some of the company ethics at Ocado. I like the text Waitrose send just before they arrive and I've never had any problems with missing items (their website could be better though!)

mintoreo · 10/12/2018 11:32

I’ve ordered from Waitrose online a few times now using the offer you mentioned and apart from the website being a bit dodgy sometimes can’t relate to your other issues. Never had an issue with missing items. Substitutions are rare but like for like (normally more expensive nicer versions of what I ordered) dates brill - last week they weren’t happy with the Date on a loaf of bread (next day) so gave it to me for free and the deliveries always on time with a handy text. Maybe it depends on your local Waitrose??

TheVonTrappFamilySwingers · 10/12/2018 11:44

I used Ocado for years but use Waitrose now.

Why? Ocado wanted to charge around £100 for the annual delivery pass despite me being a good customer and didn't offer a discount. Waitrose is free for delivery.

My only agreement is the website is less user friendly than Ocado however the food is perfect and I have never had a problem with missing items.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/12/2018 12:04

I've used both, I can't bring myself to bed too bothered either way, never had huge issues with either and neither is exactly rocket science to use. Both occasionally substitute or aren't on time, it's just luck of the draw rather than one company being uniquely superior to another IMO.

lostvoice · 10/12/2018 12:12

Minimum spend of £80 seems a lot? Or am I just a cheap skate?

CaroloftheBalls · 10/12/2018 12:17

I’ve never had a problem with the website.

£20 off first five shops.

If something is out of stock they replace it with something of higher value but keep the lower price.

If something is short dated you get it for free.

Free newspaper.

Tried Ocado once but the fruit was horrible. Waitrose all the way!

KindergartenKop · 10/12/2018 12:42

You're right about the smart pass for delivery, I hadn't factored that in actually.
£80 a week isn't that much for a family of 4 with bits for Xmas bumping it up a bit. Obviously I could get it cheaper from ASDA but their delivery is dire.
Waitrose bananas are good actually.

Because Ocado don't deliver to my part of the country and I've never had a problem with Waitrose. People have different experiences.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 10/12/2018 13:48

No Ocado here.

£60 minimum order.

Better than every other supermarket and very rarely any issues.

Vitalogy · 10/12/2018 14:20

I ordered from Waitrose once to get the first order discount. There was at least one substitute that I can remember. Ocado all the way.

MrsBobtonTrent · 10/12/2018 14:26

I prefer Waitrose - free delivery, nearly always some random freebie (because of “short date”, or weird Heston pies etc). Drivers are nice and I get a text when they are nearly here. Prices are on par with other supermarkets for the stuff I buy.

TheProvincialLady · 10/12/2018 14:31

I switched to Waitrose when Ocado got involved in the denial of female biology. And I’ve been perfectly happy. Wouldn’t swap back to Ocado now.

OkToday · 10/12/2018 14:36

I have a load of £30 off a £150 shop vouchers through the post. The same code from start of November to 16th December so I have been using that extra £30 to buy all my Christmas food, drink, paper and sweets etc. If anyone thay already has a my waitrose card wanted to try the code I am happy to share, you could get 2 weekly shops out of it.

HermaHelen · 10/12/2018 14:39

It's not too bad. Though I prefer Ocado, never any substitutions there. The customer service is very good, but the range is lacking, in my opinion. It's the sort of 'last resort' place I shop at when I've left it late to find a slot elsewhere.

Sainsbury's is my usual supermarket, though. Rarely any problems.

TwistedChristmas · 10/12/2018 21:30

Ocado have issues with the dictionary definition of woman. Have a search for the Ocado boycott thread. I've swapped to Waitrose and Tesco and have had no issues. Plus all the £20 off vouchers and other offers. £95 of stuff for £60? Yes please!

BouleBaker · 10/12/2018 21:59

We use Waitrose out of choice when we need an online order. Free delivery, never a problem Sith substitutions, we get very few and they are usually for better quality stuff. Staff are lovely and helpful too.

mastertomsmum · 10/12/2018 22:02

In the past I’ve found the website better than Sainsbury’s. Ocado has 1 hr slots more round here but Waitrose deliver is more local and more Waitrose stuff so I prefer that

Zevitevitchofcwsmas · 10/12/2018 22:24

Agree op and the way waitrose pack bags 🤔. Ocado is much better.

Fairylightfurore · 10/12/2018 22:28

I won't use Ocado again, Tesco's all the way here and Waitrose for Christmas.

spreadingchestnuttree · 10/12/2018 22:35

I prefer Waitrose to Ocado because delivery is free, never had problems with substitutions, and I like the fact you can but exact numbers of carrots / leeks / apples / whatever whereas last time I used Ocado fresh fruit and veg all came pre-bagged (not sure if that's changed?)

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 10/12/2018 22:37

Because I get free delivery, it’s always on time and the drivers are just delightful and I like to feel I’m helping keep them in a job!

The website pisses me off though.

hidinginthenightgarden · 10/12/2018 22:39

Because I can’t often get a discount code for Ocado

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 10/12/2018 22:48

Free delivery. Lovely drivers. Vouchers. Great (more expensive) substitutes. Rarely late (unlike Ocado). Availability the next day 95% of the time (Ocado is usually day after next). I never use Ocado anymore.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 10/12/2018 22:49

Agree website can be v annoying.
