Jus that really. It's always depicted on television as actually in the workplace but I've never done this, or known anybody who has.

I had one Christmas do where it was basically a free festive lunch in the work canteen. Traditional turkey with trimmings etc. No booze and everyone expected to go back to work after.

Does that count? Xmas Smile

Yes yrs ago before they banned alcohol from the building. It was a government building so fair enough.

They were great!

wishingitwasfriday · 06/12/2018 22:22

Yes. We got a take away, brought in our own alcohol and played games. Then those who wanted to went into town. Was a great laugh and inclusive as was cheap.

Kezzie200 · 06/12/2018 22:24

Yes.

Theres only 6 of us and 1 is elderly now so doesnt eat rich food and another on a medically enforced diet. Its easier and if we went out 1/3 of us would be missing, so that defeats the point.

So we hit Waitrose and some staff cook their speciality canapes. Its nice and if clients arrive they usually join us.

Ok, theres virtually no booze. One glass of weak bucks fizz and the non drivers finish whats left.

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/12/2018 22:25

Yes, in government buildings.

LAlady · 06/12/2018 22:25

Yes, one party mid 90s. Took place on one floor of the office and was a brilliant night.

ikltownofboothlehem · 06/12/2018 22:30

We used to in my old place. £10 a head. Free pour booze. Buffet. Great parties but.....messy.

TarragonSauce · 06/12/2018 22:35

We used to have brilliant ones on the 17th floor of New Scotland Yard back in the early 80s. It was difficult for us to go elsewhere because of security measures (it was a very special department if you get my drift). The Yard had a perimeter corridor all around each floor, great for the conga.
They relented at some point and then we had our do upstairs at The Feathers, the pub next door, but that had a spiral staircase so you were always in peril after a couple of Pernod and blacks. At least we could get a disco in though, rather than Tracey's cassette player.

Yes.i used to work in a small sports club, and the manager said we could have a christmas party in his office, lol,so there we sat, myself, the caretaker and the manager, the manager brought in sausage rolls,i brought in a big box of chocolate fingers, the caretaker brought in some very tiny cakes,he was very tight,if looks could kill when i helped myself to a pink iced cake! lol we were allowed to help ourselves to the coffee machine twice! at the end of the party the caretaker took the rest of his cakes home!Grin

NotSureThisIsWhatIWant · 06/12/2018 22:44

Yes, we had it in my previous office. Everybody brought something to share and the department provided the wine.

BikeRunSki · 06/12/2018 22:53

Yep, back in the day when we had a canteen. Now we don’t even have enough desks.

BackforGood · 06/12/2018 23:10

We have a 'shared lunch' about twice a year.
Everyone brings in something for the table and we all dig in and socialise a bit. Then the Manager says a few words - notes of any staff leaving or having a baby or getting married or something, then we all clear up and go on our way.

cortex10 · 06/12/2018 23:15

Yes in the 80s (NHS offices)

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 06/12/2018 23:17

Ours will be, tomorrow evening. Buffet food, and lots of beer and wine. Soft drinks for non boozers. Bit of music. Should be fun!

WootCanal · 06/12/2018 23:20

Yes.
We had several Christmas Do's and one was a late afternoon buffet - everyone bring in something.

Police force late 90's.

Desks pulled together with loads of food and drink. Silly games (invented by a colleague - stuff of office party legend) music, speeches by the bosses and chat.

Was actually pretty good fun and far better than the going to a packed restaurant serving crap food at expensive cost (we did that every year too).

For the hard core - a very long night out a nearby pub followed.

HoobaHooba · 06/12/2018 23:21

Yes in early 90s. Utility company. They used to have a massive booze raffle and work would stop for the afternoon. They did the raffle and then people started drinking whatever they’d won. And carried on down the street to the local pub when work finished at 5pm.

Same utility company two years later. Last working day before Xmas - the laboratory manager had been brewing his own drink in one of the labs. Massive party in the labs and the offices while those unlucky enough to draw the short straw worked (16 hour lab).

Don’t think the company would be like this now!

AJPTaylor · 06/12/2018 23:22

Jeez
Twas a thing in the 80s and 90s. No longer happens for good reasons.

VladmirsPoutine · 06/12/2018 23:23

Yes, and some people got incredibly drunk. No venue to hire + everyone bringing drinks did not make for a relaxed morning the following the Monday.

halfwitpicker · 06/12/2018 23:37

I just had wine and cheese after work in the office? Does that count?

ChocolateTearDrops · 07/12/2018 00:51

Yes, government building. Find memories of those parties! Grin

ChocolateTearDrops · 07/12/2018 00:51

Fond...

WHAT91 · 07/12/2018 00:53

I'm going to mine tomorrow... In the office! Confused

GaryBaldbiscuit · 07/12/2018 00:54

yes, we have done for years.
also an evening do, non compulsory

GaryBaldbiscuit · 07/12/2018 00:55

no booze in the office now though

GaryBaldbiscuit · 07/12/2018 00:55

actually I am lying, last year we did have booze! Grin
