Has anybody ever had their office Christmas party IN the office?

Jus that really. It's always depicted on television as actually in the workplace but I've never done this, or known anybody who has.

We are having a Jacob's Join next week as my colleagues are too boring to go out. I have happy memories of parties in government offices when alcohol was allowed . We had silly games such as races down the office in wheeled chairs.

Sashkin · 07/12/2018 01:41

Ours was this afternoon, between 3-4. No alcohol, obviously. It was a bit rubbish. It called itself a Christmas party, but I think even “festive gathering” would be pushing it since it wasn't particularly festive.

Thinking about it, I was a bit flirty with one of the guys. Other people encouraged him to show me a pic of his girlfriend 🤔

I'm married though

We had wine, beer, and lots of lovely food. The real party I . E. Everyone invited, is next weekend, there's 900 people going apparently Hmm

Same utility company two years later. Last working day before Xmas - the laboratory manager had been brewing his own drink in one of the labs. Massive party in the labs and the offices while those unlucky enough to draw the short straw worked (16 hour lab).

Jacobs Join, Secret Santa, a quiz and then optional pub.

At one school I worked at we had the Christmas party in the school hall. It was extremely messy: the bar was a pound for any drink, and I have no idea who cleaned up before the kids came in the next day for the last day of term, nor how we survived it. The caretaker kicked us all out at 11 and we moved on to the local late-licence pub, after which several people piled into the empty cottage which was once the caretaker's house and spent the night wrapped in rolls of bubble wrap for blankets. One assistant head tried to get into his office, but the caretaker had set the alarms, so he ended up sleeping under a bush outside his office window, until 7am when he crawled in and lay under his desk for an hour. Almost the entire staff crowded into the tube station cafe at 7.30 to try and clear our heads with strong coffee and bacon butties. It was a very ill-advised night and we had our parties off-site on a Friday night after that. Why anyone thought a Thursday was wise I'll never know.

Choccy That made me laugh - the thought of the head, curled up under a bush! Grin
I had to look up what a Jacobs Join was - never heard of it before!

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 02:28

We are having alcohol at our office party. I am organising so torn between putting it into the Jacobs Join or just buying a fucking winebox myself to save all the hassle.

tallwivglasses · 07/12/2018 02:36

Choccy how long ago was that? I remember some wild teachers' parties in the early 80's (happy days...)

Much more fun than the county court I worked in where I spent most of the party drunkenly graffiti-ing feminist slogans and inking in bras and pants on the baillifs' nudey calendars

MintyT · 07/12/2018 03:07

Yes so brilliant

Went to work in party dress ( public transport) worked until 2. Then into the canteen for the party, the canteen had been transformed into nightclub central. Everyone had to be there. Really really good fun, the on the dot of 6 it ended and we went home. My DH picked me up ( in a Ford Capri ) with DC in his car seat, and we went to see my Nan, so weird coming out of a ' nightclub' to a normal end of a working day

BlackBeltInPresentWrapping · 07/12/2018 04:18

I also had to find out what Jacob's Join is - it's Pot Luck here.

We would usually go out for drinks and a meal. I can only remember one party being held actually at work. It was a serious job, which usually led to a serious atmosphere around the place, and I think that contributed to it not being held in the office again. It was hard especially for seniors to switch off from work to social mode, and the lighting and furnishings didn't lend themselves to a party atmosphere. On the positive side, it was a pleasant enough evening. Everyone brought food and drinks to share, we chatted to eachother a lot more than usual which was actually good for professional relationships, and played some games with prizes, (which was actually more fun than you'd expect), and there was music on in the background. It was inclusive for all abilities and ages, and inexpensive for everyone. No indiscretions, as far as I know. A few went on to a comedy club and nightclub, but that's another story.

CormoranStrike · 07/12/2018 06:39

Ours is I. The office this year!

ocomeallyevipers · 07/12/2018 07:05

Not quite an office I guess, but when I was 17 I worked in a pub and the Christmas do was held in the pub, on the regular quiz night with all the locals there. The bar staff had to keep stopping to serve and the landlord said after two hours "that's enough, it's over now. Go home." Everybody was mighty pissed Off, apart from me as I'd been snuck loads of JD and coke rather than the soft drinks I was meant to be having. Grin

I just love the idea of the party like in The Office Christmas special. With Keith as DJ, snogging in the stationary cupboard etc.

Did people photocopying their bottom actually happen? Another throw back to a more innocent age before technology led to dick pics and selfies!

DollyWilde · 07/12/2018 07:17

Surprised by the number of people saying booze is banned from their office. I’ve never had a Christmas party in the office but most offices I’ve worked in there have been end of the month drinks in the communual area. Nowadays it’s a chance to show my face, knock two tepid wines back and get the heck out of there. When I was younger, though, it led to a bit of scandalous behaviour Wink

BeanBagLady · 07/12/2018 07:41

Yes, but I have always worked for grant aided, Charity or not for profit organisations, and we all know that the great British Public hate to see charity money going to paid employees Wink

We bring home cooked stuff to share, drink is not banned, we relax and have fun.

Office parties, like weddings, seem to have got less home grown and more extravagant over the years.

ScreamingValenta · 07/12/2018 07:44

No. Even back in the 90s, the office parties I've known have always been at a different venue. I've often wondered why you see this so frequently on TV, as it seems uncommon in real life.

OoohSmooch · 07/12/2018 19:18

I used to work for the head office of a high street retailer (no longer trading RIP). I'd only been there a few months and knew their finances weren't great so had already started to job search. The Christmas 'party' was in the office....we did have booze though!
