Crumpets, muffins and waffles.

Which do you like the most and what do you have them with ? My tastes are simple so plain buttered (must be Lurpak) is fine with me for any of them. However, blue Stilton or Shropshire cheese is excellent on buttered muffins with a glass of white wine.

Quality is important. I don't know who makes good waffles but Kingsmill muffins and Co-op 'posh' (sourdough ?) crumpets are my favourites.

I love crumpets. I use Waitrose or Sainsbury sourdough ones. They are especially nice as French toast, soaked in beaten egg and a little milk and fried in a knob of butter, served with berries and maple syrup (zero cal if I'm trying to limit the damage Smile

I love muffins toasted with butter or with bacon. I like waffles but don't have them often.

Oldraver · 06/12/2018 17:24

I love them all but don't find any very good quality.

Warburtons have gone so stodgy

Branleuse · 06/12/2018 17:27

I really like marks and spencer ultimate crumpets and coop sourdough crumpets.

Lidl crumpets are crap though. Too dense

Warburtons crumpets with real butter and marmite...I could live off that.

Torsz · 06/12/2018 17:50

Crumpets are my favourite, with loads of flora and cashew butter...mmm!

raindancemumma · 06/12/2018 17:51

Crumpets, almost burnt, waaaaay tooooo muuuuuch salted butter - sometimes a bit of bobtail or marmite too.

Peachydream · 06/12/2018 17:51

M&S Crumpets topped with a thin spread of Butter, a smear of Marmite and a drizzle of honey. Controversial but life changing Grin

raindancemumma · 06/12/2018 17:53

Bobtail!? Ha ha! Obviously I meant Bovril. Can't imagine what rabbit on crumpets would taste like!! Blush

IndigoSpritz · 06/12/2018 17:58

Are pikelets (thinner and flatter crumpets) still around ? I remember M&S selling them years ago.

Crumpets with butter and Marmite (so a puddle forms underneath from seepage) delish!

Heuschrecke · 06/12/2018 18:14

Pikelets, yes I think you can still buy them - not sure where because I haven't looked recently, but I love them - must have a look for them when next in supermarket!

"Bobtail!? Ha ha! Obviously I meant Bovril." Sorry to derail the thread, raindancemumma but on a very recent thread a MNer told of asking an assistant in a supermarket where the Bovril was - apparently he took her to the aisle where all the loo rolls were and pointed at them saying "there you are, madam, bog rolls" Grin

Muffins for me, toasty hot with salted butter and a poached egg. Then crumpets, toasty hot with lashings of salted butter and a little marmite 😍

I'm a bit meh about the waffles!

CakeNinja · 06/12/2018 18:36

Crumpets are far superior on that list. Grilled (we don’t have a toaster) on both sides until very overdone and crusty loaded up with so much butter that it drips through and pools on the plate. Sometimes I put marmite on them too but they’re probably at their finest with the salty butter.

Muffins I like when they’re homemade, topped with bacon and a cheese sauce.

Waffles - I like the very expensive shop bought ones, with squirt cream and melted chocolate on top.

Clearly, I’m all about overloading my arteries Blush

I don’t eat any of them on a regular basis though, only for a treat!

rooella · 06/12/2018 18:43

Crumpets with butter and lemon curd!

StarveInn · 06/12/2018 19:57

Double toasted crumpets with butter. Also a fan of a buttery bagel.

bluechameleon · 06/12/2018 19:59

Crumpets with butter and honey. Or with melted cheese. I also like wholemeal muffins with tomato and melted cheese, but our Tesco rarely stocks wholemeal muffins and white ones aren't as tasty. I've recently got a waffle maker so we have waffles quite a lot - ideally I'd have them with lots of maple syrup but to be healthier I usually have yoghurt and fruit. Our local waffle place does them with bacon and banana which is delicious.

crispy toasted crumpets with salted butter, marmite and grilled cheese .. ahhh it is my FAVE thing ever

ikltownofboothlehem · 06/12/2018 20:05

Bagel with philly cheese or Brie, crispy bacon and cranberry.

IndigoSpritz · 07/12/2018 05:07

Quite a variety of toppings here but butter features strongly. I don't think I've seen peanut butter mentioned yet.

GUYS

Aldi do amazing sourdough crumpets

  • deep holes
  • many holes
  • don’t overcrisp

Beautiful slathered in butter.

Basically my staple diet for the first 12 weeks of this pregnancy. Have now graduated to interspersing with a bagel or two (plain with Philadelphia).

IndigoSpritz · 07/12/2018 05:45

Sourdough crumpets seem to have caught on. I'd never seen them until a few weeks ago. Now all the shops seem to sell them.

I forgot bagels. Are they a Jewish delicacy ?

OP posts:
PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 07/12/2018 05:50

They definitely originated in Jewish bakeries IIRC

There’s a Jewish bakery in N London I’m thinking of taking the children to next weekend as I miss their bagels so much (I now live in Surrey). Yes they are THAT good.

WILL TRAVEL FOR BAGELS

TinselBee · 07/12/2018 05:58

I love crumpets, we had crumpets filled with butter and melted cheese on top for lunch yesterday

Waffles are so good, I love them with bacon and maple syrup. Yum.

Muffins are good too, least fav though. Enjoy them with jam or eggs Benedict.

Oh and in response to the OP question about fruit cake. Yes we toast and butter it!

Rockbird · 07/12/2018 06:02

Warburtons crumpets by a mile. Really crispy, slathered in lurpak and accompanied by a mug of Yorkshire tea. There is nothing better.
