The plastic bit at the top of gift bags? What are you supposed to do?

This bit? Are you supposed to put one handle through, or both? Or neither and it is used to seal the bag in some way? I’ve googled but am obviously phrasing the search badly.

It’s to hand the bag on the shelf in the shop. Just fold it down out the way.

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/12/2018 18:52

I cut it off, isn't just for the shop to hang them on the metal display rods?

Brownsauce83 · 05/12/2018 18:52

Isn’t it just used for displaying them in the shop?

SprogletsMum · 05/12/2018 18:52

Isn't it what the shop uses to hang them up? They are usually perforated so you can rip them off.

Dothehappydance · 05/12/2018 18:52

Tear it off, it is the bit for hanging in the shop. May be perforated.

Dothehappydance · 05/12/2018 18:52

Massive X post.

Unusually for Mumsnet, we seem to have a consensus!

Oh goodness. I was NOT expecting that answer. Here I am thinking they seal the bag or secure the handles in some way. Thank you. I’ve always wondered what to do with it and decided it’s just one of those things that’s obvious to others but not to me.

I am now wondering how I’ve got to 58 and didn’t know this 🙄

60+ and didn’t know either.... you have no idea how eagerly I rushed to open this thread, thinking I was going to learn the secret at last Blush

Frozenteatowel · 05/12/2018 20:45

Giggorata. I’m really disappointed too.

Although it was only after my four DC were out of nappies that I learned why baby vests had envelope necks Blush

mirren3 · 05/12/2018 21:11

54 and didn't know either, I was sure it was for sealing the bags.
In my defence I live in the arse end of the West of Argyll and our shops usually have all the bags that are for sale sitting inside one bag, not hanging up.

superstarburst · 05/12/2018 22:16

The question is how to pull it off without ripping the bag. They need to get rid of those plastic feckers

Frozenteatowel · 05/12/2018 22:17

mirren3 living in the middle of nowhere is a mitigating factor. I live in a big city with things like John Lewis and posh shops in tasteful Victorian arcades, yet I had no idea they were to hang the flipping things up in store. I’m wondering what other everyday things I have no idea about.

Do you know how to figure out which side your car petrol tank is on by looking at your fuel gauge?

StealthPolarBear · 05/12/2018 22:38

Can I winged about 'easy remove' stickers. Easy remove my arse

Frozenteatowel · 05/12/2018 22:40

Justkeeprollingalong. No I didn’t know that either 😳. I might need to start a thread called ‘tell me all the every day things I don’t know ‘

Tbh, I think it’s a waste of time shops adding that plastic bit to hang the bag. The bag has handles 🤷🏼‍♀️

bringincrazyback · 05/12/2018 22:44

I cut that bit off. Annoys me that it's there in the first place... surely the shops could just hang the gift bags up by the handles!

DeadBod · 05/12/2018 22:44

I knew what it was for but why don't they hang the bags by their handles and do away with the tag? Confused

DeadBod · 05/12/2018 22:45

X post with bring
