The plastic bit at the top of gift bags? What are you supposed to do?

This bit? Are you supposed to put one handle through, or both? Or neither and it is used to seal the bag in some way? I’ve googled but am obviously phrasing the search badly.

That little bit is called a Boswell, known as Bos for short. You can get those bags up at the post office.

PerspicaciaTick · 05/12/2018 23:15

@superstarburst they are usually perforated, so if you fold them back and forth they just snap off.

Helipad · 05/12/2018 23:29

They are called euro slots Grin

Justkeeprollingalong · 05/12/2018 23:50

@Rosalise keep that Bos out of this!

SpoonBlender · 06/12/2018 00:33

@Rosalise Grin Gawd, that thread...

Rosalise · 06/12/2018 00:45

I know. From now on anything that I see that has no really useful purpose is called a Bos. Grin

Weathermonger · 06/12/2018 03:48

@DeadBod if the stores hang the bags by the handles they take up more room as the handles are longer. I just found that out when I was stocking shelves for a Christmas store.

Vitalogy · 06/12/2018 04:12

Another load of unnecessary plastic! Good tip re fuel gauge.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 06/12/2018 07:47

Heh this has made me smile today. Xmas Smile

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 06/12/2018 07:48

And yes, I always cut it off.

Startoftheyear2018 · 06/12/2018 07:52

Ok so why do baby vests have an envelope neck?

PrivateEggnog · 06/12/2018 07:58

SleightOfMind same here with the vests. Even worse, I actually told a friend, when she had her baby, about it like it was some massive revelation, and she was like Hmm "yes I knew that".

The petrol gauge thing is great, thanks!

EastMidsGPs · 06/12/2018 08:07

I didn't know the plastic Boswells were perforated. I always develop a rage as I can never find the scissors to cut them off, end up trying to rip them off and take some of the bag with it.

EmmaJR1 · 06/12/2018 08:09

@Startoftheyear2018 the necks are enveloped so that on the dire case of a poonami the vest stretches to come down the body instead of up. Tadahhh! No poo on the babies face!

IPromiseIWontBeNaughty · 06/12/2018 08:10

I learnt about envelope vests 5 years ago - dc is now 20 Blush

Justkeeprollingalong · 06/12/2018 08:22

My girls were in their teens before I found out about the baby vests. I once actually cut a vest off because of a traumatic poonami!

Frozenteatowel · 06/12/2018 08:29

I was a grandparent before I found out about the envelope vest thing. At least I was able to pass such a useful gem on to DD while her first was still a baby. So amazed at petrol cap revelation. The things I’ve learned over the years on here. Wow.

Here's another really useful one I've only recently found out; that whole in your spaghetti spoon? It measures one portion of pasta!

justkeeprollingalong
No it doesn’t. That is one of those great internet myths. Different brands/designs of pasta server have different size holes - mine fits about 25g spaghetti, which is not even a child sized serving.

Justkeeprollingalong · 06/12/2018 08:58

It works on mine. My whole must be bigger than yours! 🤗

Justkeeprollingalong · 06/12/2018 08:58

Hole not whole!

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 06/12/2018 20:01

It might work on some, but I reckon the hole is there to allow the water to drain quickly and easily.

CakeNinja · 06/12/2018 20:54

I tried the vest thing on dc3 a couple of times after poonami situations and it didn’t work Confused

RTK · 08/08/2025 21:42

you have to look close to see the perforation but it's right at the edge of where the bag meets the tag carefully grab the part that's glued to the bag and tear off the top part being careful not to tear the bag
