What little touches have you added to your bathroom

That you feel really improved it?

We are currently turning a bedroom into a bathroom. After much (much) deliberation on layout, we are finally sorted and off to pick the bathroom furniture etc tomorrow. Because it’s a complete blank canvas, it’s a bit overwhelming to try and remember what we might need!

It isn’t a huge room, and it will have a shower over bath, so if you have a similar set up, what do you love about your bathroom?

My heated towel rail
Huge mirror over the sink
A shelf/space by the mirror to put make up bag etc
A shelf (in my case its the window sill) by the bath for book and candles and wine glass

four have you got an electric heated towel rail or plumbed in? We can’t decide which one - the electric one would be placed closer to the shower which makes me sway more towards that (and we often don’t have the heating on because we have a wood burner going all day/night, so would we want to put all the heating on just for the one rail?)
Big mirror is on my list. Oh, a good light over it too, must remember that!
Good thinking with some sort of shelf near bath.

Shelf for pretty bottles/baskets
We have a wall hung, drawer unit with the sink on top holds a huge amount of toiletries, so room doesn’t look cluttered.
Also have a small built in shelve arrangement, in a wasted corner where I put rolled up hand towels.

I really want a proper cupboard in my bathroom, and if I get it redone I'll be getting on. They sell very tall narrow ones which would do me: I don't really mind not storing towels in there, but I want somewhere to get the bleach, the rubber gloves, the scourer and the descaler , the spare loo rolls and toiletries out of sight. I have a cabinet but it's not big enough. I think I'd also be tempted to have a humidity-sensing quiet extractor fan, and ideally somewhere fixed to hang towels that have more room than just a heated towel rail. But a cupboard would be top of my list.

We have our rail plumbed in, as the bathroom is really cold but if you have wood burner going a lot then would imagine an electric one would do the job.

A heated mirror with back lighting. It’s fab when the bathroom is steamed up and you need the mirror!

We have an electric towel rail and a radiator in the bathroom. I refused to have a towel rail connected to the main heating because I hate having damp towels when the heating goes off.

I got a light up mirror, like bulbs round the edge, if I'm relaxing in the bath I put it on and some candles.

We’ve got a weird floor to ceiling alcove next to where the sink will go which I’ve asked to be made into shelves, so hopefully that will be good storage for toothbrushes, spare towels, soap etc. There is also the airing cupboard in that room which has a bit of storage. Hadn’t thought about storage for cleaning products, will have a think about that one and see if there’s anywhere one would fit.

Should we put a radiator in as well as a towel rail? It’s a very warm room, wood burner directly below and airing cupboard makes it toasty, but not sure if it will be toasty enough once tiled etc?

DH is very keen for a rain shower. I’m not a fan so I think we will get one of those rain showers with a normal attachment on the wall IYKWIM.

Also like the idea for somewhere other than towel rail to hang towels too.

Don't do full tiling if you can help it. It is cold and echoy. Only tile where you need.

Floor to ceiling heated towel rail , round magnifying mirror that is adjustable and lights up , light that comes on automatically when you walk into the room .

You can get plumbed in towel rails that also have the electric heating element.

The thing that I love in my en-suite bathroom is the sensor lighting, so you can go in at night without switching on the main light and fan.

I also love the under floor heating and electric towel rail, but am not so keen on the clicking noise of the thermostats which wake me up all night.

If you get a bathroom cabinet and or storage around the sink, check the sizes carefully. My cabinet is not quite deep enough for big shampoo bottles or loo rolls.

We have a big cupboard in ours, the top part is shelving for my many towels ( I seem to like towels ) and the bottom is units for all of the spare toiletries/sanpro/ cleaning basket etc.

It means that the clutter is out of the way.
I've also got a lovely plant on the window sill and show towels which everyone knows not to touch, silly I know but they look nice.

I also keep the nicest products only out!

How exciting :) I love my bathroom.

I can’t decide what to do about tiles. Originally I wanted to just tile floor to ceiling around bath/shower, but I really dislike the look of tiles abruptly ending in the middle of a wall. I feel like a fully tiled room would make it look bigger/more seamless (I want same tiles on floor/bath panel/walls) but agree it will look/feel colder.

I’ve asked them to install the extractor fan on a separate switch to the light as the fan coming on in the middle of the night drives me mad.

Dual electric and plumbed in towel rail. Moisture sensitive extractor so only comes on when room is steamy. Silicone matches grout makes all edges seamless

Ah I haven’t actually thought of any storage near to the loo at all, maybe a shelf above the loo with a basket for sanitary stuff? There’s nothing worse than having to hop to the other side of the room with knickers round ankles! (Am currently pregnant so forgotten all about the joys of TOTM)

Definitely with you all on plants. Can’t wait till it’s finished and I can decorate it nicely with finishing touches! (If I haven’t gone into labour by then, by which point I probably won’t give two shits about plants and just want sleep instead )

Warm-Up underfloor heating
Cost a few hundred to install, costs pence to run but is SO lovely on a cold day to have a lovely warm floor
And it means water evaporates off the floor so we don't need a big bath mat

Shower valves that aren't under the shower so you don't get a wet arm turning the shower on. The controls are halfway down the bath wall

A 'showering bath'
We got the Bette Ocean one but there are others
It's a bath designed for having a shower over, so is sloping at one end and flat to the wall at the other, and has a plug hole in the middle so you don't stand on the plug and block the water

Cubbyhole thing for shampoo and shower gel - looks much neater and is nice to have things to hand rather than on the side of the bath

Glass shower screen instead of a curtain
We've got one thats hinged in the middle so we can pull it back to bath DC easily

A friend of mine has all her shower controls outside the (massive!) enclosed cubicles.

No more reaching round and getting a cold arm! Just turn it on and then wallow in lovely hot shower with room to dance about if you want!

Good mirror, a bin, good storage. Bathrooms get damp so need easy cleaning - I don't like lots of bits around so much easier to clean, without having to move stuff.

We built our own house so made sure we had good sized bathrooms. One thing I love in our main bathroom is the fact that it has a separate bath and shower. We put in t and g panelling all the way round and only have tiles on the floor and in the shower. We have a large full height cupboard for linen and a nice Lloyd loom chair in the corner to sit on whilst getting dried - luxury!

Warm up underfloor heating- brilliant
One rain shower head plus one normal type on rail which has various settings
Shower controls both in and outside of the shower, switch on shower from outside so it’s the right temperature before you get in plus control inside so you can switch between shower heads
Powder coated heated towel rail, far better than chrome
Low level lights on a sensor that turn on when you walk in
Wall lights so not dazzled while relaxing in the bath
Good extractor fan
Separate switch for fan
All of the above we love in our bathrooms

Shower controls separate to the heads is an interesting idea, I’ll ask about that one! I want one of those telephone shower heads with the bath taps too for rinsing my hair in the bath. I also want the bath taps in the middle of the bath rather than under the shower. Nothing worse than the tap lottery when you try and run a bath for a child and end up accidentally turning the shower on instead!

I don’t think we are going for underfloor heating. The floor is so warm in that room already so I think we can get away with it (and the budget is not never ending...)

Folding shower screen is good thinking.
