What little touches have you added to your bathroom

That you feel really improved it?

We are currently turning a bedroom into a bathroom. After much (much) deliberation on layout, we are finally sorted and off to pick the bathroom furniture etc tomorrow. Because it’s a complete blank canvas, it’s a bit overwhelming to try and remember what we might need!

It isn’t a huge room, and it will have a shower over bath, so if you have a similar set up, what do you love about your bathroom?

For me full tile has been wonderful, it's maybe echoey but I don't wear heels in there or take calls so I'm not affected by those things.

An extractor fan that closes over completely. Spiders gah!

The yucca tree I bought for my father in law and loved too much to gift lives in my bathroom in winter.

A nice radiator.

We do have a telly in the room, splurged when I was made redundant but secured new employment quickly never use it. Maybe one day.

This is the kind of theme I was thinking of with having full tiles. The room has sloping ceilings on one side which could make it feel a bit cosier maybe.

Make sure you've got plenty of space to put things whilst you're showering - soap, shampoo, shower gel etc. I had niches put in the walls which are fantastic.

Ikea do brilliant bathroom storage - I've got their Hemnes sink unit with two drawers, and also the Hemnes mirrored cupboard above, which is great for storing toiletries.

My favourite thing is a shaver point inside the cupboard over the sink, so I can keep my toothbrush on charge but out of sight.

Oh I love the idea of a hidden shaving socket!

What are you all storing in your bathrooms? We currently only have a tiny cupboard over the sink in the current bathroom and I’ve never thought ‘I wish I had more storage’

We are about to do another bathroom and I wouldn't do floor to ceiling tiles again. It ramps up the cost and it looks a bit sterile. Harder to accessorise and soften since there don't tend to be lots of spare work surfaces in most bathrooms so you're left with a window ledge and possibly some vanity space. If you keep some wall bare (painted) then you can put up pictures etc to soften the look.

user187656748 · 04/12/2018 08:37

We have all spare toiletries, cleaning products, toilet roll plus towels stored in our bathroom. And medicines actually, although not really sure why.

Don't put a toilet roll holder on the wall. The free standing ones are much nicer. I also like the towel racks that go above toilets.

GinGeum · 04/12/2018 08:42

Yes I know what you mean about sterile. The tricky thing is, there isn’t really going to be any wall space for hanging pictures etc once the bathroom is in whether the walls are painted or tiled. I was hoping to hang plants from the ceiling to soften the edges a bit. Maybe I will leave the tiling decision until the bathroom suite is actually in, might be easier to visualise. I think that’s going to end up being he trickiest decision!

I love these ideas-we have nearly finished our bathroom but looking at finishing touches. Everyone in magazines with a travertine style bathroom has white towels, but I can see (with my kids) they’d end up filthy!! Do they?!

Also, where did everyone get their lit mirrors from-some on Amazon are £300!?

user187656748 · 04/12/2018 08:45

We have lots of bathrooms. My favourite are the ones with tiling around the bath and shower but wood panelling everywhere else to half height and painted walls above that. Much softer look.

user187656748 · 04/12/2018 08:46

You need show towels holiday Wink

Get dark coloured one for the kids to actually use. keep the soft white fluffy ones for adults only.

Holidayshopping · 04/12/2018 08:55

We have lots of bathrooms.

I’m intrigued. How many is lots?!

Another vote for underfloor heating, one of my favorit things in our entire house!

GinGeum · 04/12/2018 09:06

I made the mistake of getting white towels last year. Let me tell you, farmers and white anything do not mix! Grin

Even better - they can be proper show towels and then they'll stay on the rack nice and fluffy.

CoraPirbright · 04/12/2018 09:09

If tiling the floor, def underfloor heating. My tiles are cold and bloody miserable. I like that flooring you can get that looks a bit like woven bamboo - its waterproof but nice underfoot. Mind you, my friend has got some tiles that look absolutely identical to a lovely lime-washed oak. They are brilliant and look stunning.

Also good lighting - get a variety so its not pitch black or stadium lights.

I’d like to share my shock at visiting a bathroom showroom when planning my new bathroom (being installed next month).
I made the mistake of visiting an award winning, rather upmarket place first.
Asked them roughly how much a new bathroom cost.
“Well we’ve just completed one for £65,000, madam...”
Before I ran away in horror (to find a cheap showroom for peasants like me!), I took a look at what 65K buys you.
OP, what do you think of a tinted glass floor with an actual stream running under it, complete with concealed lights and ferns, and then a wood burning stove built into the marble and gold bathroom?!!!
Needless to say, that is NOT what I’ve chosen for Babdoc Towers...!

CalmConfident · 04/12/2018 09:12

Heated mirror!

user187656748 · 04/12/2018 09:15

Bathstore quoted us 8.5k just for fitting one of ours. We had it fitted for 2k

GinGeum · 04/12/2018 09:25

A wood burning stove in the bathroom sounds like my DH’s dream Grin if he had his way he’d have some continuous trickling river going through it as well probably.

Any kind of wood flooring that isn’t actual wood flooring is a no-go - we’ve got the original wood floor exposed on the landing and fake wood joining real wood makes me a bit twitchy Grin

I also really dislike freestanding loo rolls holders, I’m not sure why! Perhaps I don’t have the quality taste required for this project...

We have a heated towel rail which a towel can hang on-all the others go in the airing cupboard. That one can’t be a show towel as that’s the hand towel everyone uses-there’s nowhere else for a white one to go!

user187656748 · 04/12/2018 09:33

We have racks like this above the toilets for the fluffy towels. Also a good use of space.
