plaidlife · 02/12/2018 04:23

armchair what did you do to upset your MIL?

smurfy2015 · 02/12/2018 04:57

A litre bottle of her favourite brandy

Fantail · 02/12/2018 05:44

No mother-in-law!

My Mum is getting some books about Sicily as they are planning a trip there next year & a tonic sampler (to go with the many bottles of gin she’ll probably get).

Armchairanarchist · 02/12/2018 13:41

@plaidlife I married her precious only son 23 years ago. Every gift has been majorly PA, some more blatant than others. The worst were a box of Oven Pride (the oven cleaner in a bright orange box) and wrinkle cream from Aldi on my 40th.

Bipbopbee · 02/12/2018 13:45

A set of pretty plates and bowls as FIL managed to drop and smash all her nice ones. And a photo book of the DC over the year

IJustLostTheGame · 02/12/2018 15:01

Nothing. It's up to DH. Usually she simpers about not wanting anything. Then she does a poor little me act and quietly suggests something ridiculously expensive with a hangdog look.
Every year.
If we get something similar to what she asked for but at a more sensible budget we get more of the hangdog looks and big sighs.

She always gives me some sort of cake baking tray or a book on gardening.
I don't bake. And I'm not into gardening.

Holymolymackerel · 02/12/2018 15:05

A throw from dunelm and a panettone. Dh thinks it's too much, they have a very testy relationship.

molemonkey · 02/12/2018 15:07

Hamper filled with things she wouldnt usually buy herself but would love! Shes impossible to buy for and she loved it when we did this a few years ago!
Food and drink make up most of it with new slippers and a dressing gown to finish it off

BifsWif · 02/12/2018 15:16

A book subscription box - it comes with posh teas or coffees to go with the novel each month. She loves reading so hopefully she’ll like it.

She has a list so we’ll get her a couple of small things from that, and maybe some nice smelliest or something too. She’s a lovely woman who does such a lot for us.

Kintan · 02/12/2018 16:10

@BifsWif that sounds perfect for my MiL - could you let me know the name of the subscription company? Thanks!

InflagranteDelicto · 02/12/2018 16:14

Nowt, she's not with us any more.

Have got my mum tickets for her & my dad to Bletchley Park through an offer. They'll both enjoy for different reasons.

FixItUpChappie · 02/12/2018 16:22

I got my in laws two Buddha Bowls (pottery bowls for eating noodles), a box of fancy chocolate liquors and a bottle of local craft wine. done and done Grin

naicepineapple · 02/12/2018 16:29

My husband will choose and buy something, it's his mum afterall

BehemothPullsThePeasantsPlough · 02/12/2018 16:30

Jigsaw and chocolates. She’ll like them both (even though she’s still very active she loves jigsaws) but I’d like to get her something more because she is a jewel amongst MILs. Might go for a hamper.

My best ever present to her was a Liberty patterned Uniqlo down jacket to wear when she goes on cruise holidays: it was much admired for its appearance and practicality by her septuagenarian cruise-mates, and DFIL then bought a similar plain one (with our help). So that’s my top tip for elderly relatives who don’t have one already: a good lightweight down jacket.

MarinaMarinara · 02/12/2018 16:31

We’ve got MIL gin. Lots of fun. DH’s idea, I’ve ordered it (he does all physical shopping, I do online ordering).

wonkylegs · 02/12/2018 16:41

Some nice gin and gin glasses (she only has shit gin at her house but likes drinking nice stuff at mine)
Some pretty fabric shopping bags, some beeswax wraps, and a few other 'eco friendly bits and bobs' as she says she wants to try to be more sustainable.

BifsWif · 02/12/2018 17:49

Kintan it’s called Book And A Brew

Kintan · 02/12/2018 19:04

BifsWif thank you! :)

Bumbumtaloo · 02/12/2018 19:20

We’ve got MIL a handbag, Yankee candles, some candle holders and a £20 Amazon voucher. We have other things stocking bits too. It seems a lot but both mums have helped us out so much over the years with money and support, I became unable to work through my ill health, DH then became my carer and it’s been really shit for a few years. The last 2 or 3yrs we have managed to get back on our feet and now like to spoil them at Christmas.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 02/12/2018 19:27

A Google Home Mini and a doormat that says "Oh no not you again" on it.Very MIL lol

Rogueone · 02/12/2018 19:28

i have bought the outlaw a few things over the years....expensive Brandy, cup with photos of DGC on it, expresso cups and saucer set, clear glass tea pot with cups and a selection of herbal teas, before that her dear son got her a tin opener Grin

Sexnotgender · 02/12/2018 19:32

Nowt, she lives on another continent and even if she was here it isn’t my job to deal with.

I buy my side DH sorts his.

umpteennamechanges · 02/12/2018 19:35

We've bought her:

  • A nice hammam towel for travelling
  • A lovely printed silk sarong
  • Rhubarb gin
  • Gardening gloves
  • Subscription to a magazine she likes
  • Coffee liqueur (made in her home town)
rupertpenryswife · 02/12/2018 19:41

Oh I read some of these and dread being an mil. My mil died a few years ago so only my dm to buy for now, and that's more difficult than my mil ever was. However, some really lovely thoughtful gifts also, would love to be on the receiving end of some of those.

Mulberry72 · 02/12/2018 19:44

cricketmum Do we have the same MIL? Grin
