Best Christmas presents you've ever given...

BestAnsweringMachineMessage · 29/11/2018 10:57

I'm having a shitty day in a shitty week and the weather is crap and I want to resign from being a grown up.

I've realised the only things cheering me up today are two Xmas presents that I've got hidden away from my partner and I can't wait to give him, because I think they're awesome, and I'd normally share that small nugget of joy with him, but I can't because they are surprises! So, I want to share with the internet instead, if slightly disguised.

One is a prize given away every week on a quiz show from the 80s, that we both find endlessly entertaining and make frequent reference to. It's not a replica, it's the actual prize and I spent much too much money on it, but I don't care because it will make him laugh so much.

The other is a production drawing of a main baddie from one of our favourite cartoons, with certificate of authenticity and the WB logo embossed on it. Going to get it properly framed and it's just awesome.

So come on, cheer me up and tell me what you have squirreled away this year to give someone you love, and that is making you feel like you've hit the present jackpot this year.

Is it a blankety blank cheque book and pen? Or a real dusty bin? Interested to know which game show 😊

LemonySippet · 29/11/2018 11:45

Please let it be a blankety blank cheque book and pen, that would be too cool!

Marmite27 · 29/11/2018 11:45

I bought my brother a game boy when he was 11 and I was 18 in my first job.

You bought him a speedboat?

LemonySippet · 29/11/2018 11:49

Oh and mine is only small but makes me fizz with excitement when I think about it, I got DS who loves reading a Skullduggery Pleasant book earlier in the year, and he LOVED it. He has no idea there are more books in the series, and I found the others for a pound each at a sale, and I can't wait to see his face when he opens them one by one Grin

Rarfy · 29/11/2018 11:56

I've got my parents a teasmaid. They often talk fondly of having had a teasmaid so i am hoping they will love it. Got some little milk pots and posher than normal teabags to go with so i'm hoping they will love it.

Got dp an armani coat already given him it it's not to my tastes really but he has a work colleague who wears designer gear and they're always bantering at each other about it but i did sense he was a teeny bit envious so now he has his own and he never gets excited about presents but seemed really chuffed with it which was lovely to see.

Also got dniece an ariana grande perfume cracker. I think she will be pleasantly surprised i knew what to get her and listen to her when she tells me stuff and it makes her feel all lovely and warm.

The best present of all, albeit a little bit late will be the arrival of dd Grin we have had a horrendous time ttc and our little light at the end of the tunnel is awaited by so many people i can't wait!

I’ve bought DH Bose sleep buds for birthday as it’s just before christma and Elton John tickets (for 2020!) he doesn’t think he will get he headphones but is hoping for money towards them and the tickets he will have no idea about at all. I can’t wait to give him those

CMH123 · 29/11/2018 12:55

3 years ago I made a friend 365 sticky notes with memories, quotes, ideas etc on each individial one in a huge kilner jar. As she opened each one she glued it into a scrap book. She cried when I gave her the jar.

Stompythedinosaur · 29/11/2018 13:04

Getting dd1 a kiddizoom camera for her 4th birthday - "it's what I've always dreamed of!" I doubt I will ever give such a well received present again.

IHeartKingThistle · 29/11/2018 13:29

I got Cursed Child tickets for the DC for this January at the end of 2017 and have said NOTHING for over a YEAR! Every time it comes up I say 'I keep trying but they are SO hard to get!'

Actually, I need a cool way to tell them at Christmas. Don't physically have the tickets - any ideas?

BestAnsweringMachineMessage · 29/11/2018 13:37

Aww. This is all lovely and immensely cheering.

You bought him a speedboat?

No, but the reference is in the right ballpark! Kinda wish I could afford a speedboat now, as would be extra funny as we live nowhere near a body of water that could accommodate it!

I also now want a Blankety Blank chequebook and pen more than seems reasonable.

I immediately thought Bendy Bully Grin

Sounds like he'll love both presents!

Snowwontbelong · 29/11/2018 13:42

No flaming because spent 2 years researching - but collected a husky puppy on Christmas Eve for dh.
Obviously didn't box +wrap so popped out, ran upstairs and shouted of him up.
He had no idea and burst into tears.
One very loved ddog now!!
And a happy dh!!

Dowser · 29/11/2018 13:43

Wasn’t Christmas but when we were all going to Tenerife for my wedding, I bought the men for their birthdays a jet ski/ paraglide experience

They weren’t allowed to tell each other what they’d got till the last birthday in August

We all trooped along to wave them off on the day and they had the most amazing afternoon..for something like £40 each

I was as happy as a pig in muck 😂

Dowser · 29/11/2018 13:45

I got Arthur, my red self Persian cat for Christmas one year
We had him 18 years

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 29/11/2018 13:45

@Rarfy your last paragraph about your baby made me tear up! Congratulations to you all how wonderful ThanksThanksThanks

BestAnsweringMachineMessage · 29/11/2018 13:47

Rarfy your whole post is lovely, but your light at the end of the tunnel is the best bit! Congrats from a random internet stranger!

KingThistle (I love him too) Ah, now this sort of shizzle is in my wheelhouse. My sister and I once bought my mum tickets to Abigail's Party. To present that we put my handily named firstborn child in a box wearing a party hat and wielding a party blowy thing and got her to jump out when my mum started to open it. We amused ourselves greatly. I don't know much about HP&TCC, but it seems there was a #keepthesecrets campaign with badges, is that still a thing and would your DC be aware of it. If so, I'd be tempted to make them their own versions of those badges? That's confusing enough to amuse me.

Less confusing, you can buy lanyards

cursedchildstore.co.uk/collections/lanyards

I'd get them and fashion fancy looking tickets to attach to them with their names on.

Nearly. It's one of the tankards. I keep getting it out of the secret present cupboard and giggling at it.

I think these are just the loveliest of all the presents. When you just know they are right.

Ds only 2 at the time really wanted and I mean really wanted a potato to feed his toy pig Grin I found him a huge one in Tesco, wrapped it up all pretty, when he opened it he had the biggest smile on his face and sat all day playing with his pig and a giant jacket potato, it was the best Christmas ever.

BestAnsweringMachineMessage · 29/11/2018 14:47

That is kind of outrageous levels of cute monet

My best friend and I always joke about how she is useless at getting pics of our kids on days out we do together. She either forgets her camera/phone, its memory is full or it runs out of charge.

I always take the pics but I'm not good at sharing them or printing them so I did her a photo album with about 5 years worth of holidays, days out and general pics of our kids (from aged about 3 upwards). It wasn't an expensive gift but it did take time. She loved it (and I still take all the pictures)!

Wellwhatalovelyday · 29/11/2018 14:59

I’d need to hunt around, but I think I may have one of those #keepthesecret badges - happy to send it if it helps the surprise.

Otherwise.. I’d contact the some of the stars who are in the show and see if they would record a little message, cut it to a dvd and wrap it up.

Or, I’d find someone with amazing handwriting - or an italic font haha - & have someone post a dozen or so letters through the door at the moment you want to unveil the surprise, a la Harry going to hogwarts...
