Never thought about this but we never lock the door other than when we go to bed.
Talking to friends it seems that this is quite unusual , is it ?

I always lock front & back doors. We get a lot of cold callers here. Also a teacher of mine was stabbed to death in his back garden nearby - a few years ago now & it was really sad, you never know who is around.

Hushnownobodycares · 25/11/2018 10:29

Yes.

Read a story years back that stuck with me about an opportunist burglar who walked in and raped the owner. In court he claimed it was her fault for leaving the door unlocked.

FlorencesHunger · 25/11/2018 10:30

I used to not bother locking the door but this past year it was rife with break ins in my town, people brazingly just walking into properties in the daytime. If people were in the house they'd either walk back out or assault you. Ditto break in at night.

It was every night for about a month or two, So now I do lock the door when I'm in.

keepingbees · 25/11/2018 10:34

Yes front and back always locked. Back door doesn't need to be unlocked. Front door isn't always locked on the weekend when we are all home but I'm in the house alone all week and I always lock it. You never know when someone might try the door, even though I live in a quiet area, you just don't know. We also get a lot of cold callers, who I ignore if I know it's them. I feel a lot more confident ignoring knocking when I know the door is locked.

Mumshappy · 25/11/2018 10:39

Doors always locked and keys out of reach of children. I live off a busy main road.

Thesearmsofmine · 25/11/2018 10:40

Yes both doors always locked unless we’re in the garden. Our house backs onto a wooded area with a gate at the end of our gardens, I also don’t want my children to escape!

TooTrueToBeGood · 25/11/2018 10:46

No, but mainly because we live in a very quiet area and the living room is both very close to the front door and also looks out onto the path up to it. We used to live in a much rougher area and the door was always double locked and the chain on.

teenagetantrums · 25/11/2018 10:47

I don't ever lock front door, unless we all out ,but l live in a ground floor flat with a main door outside mine, this is locked although the trade button opens it until early afternoon. However l live in a quite town and with nosiest neighbors ever. No one gets into hall without my neighbor flying out and talking to them.

MichonnesBBF · 25/11/2018 10:49

Yeah I am currently at a cross roads with this at the moment.
I grew up never having a key as we never locked the door, my husband's door was always locked.

So when we moved in together it was very rare the door was locked except for bed time, however once the kids came along we got into a routine of always locking the door.

Now the kids are older and since the summer holidays they have began to play in the street with friends or together.

I still kept locking the door effectively locking them out, them always knocking to be let back in for drinks, toilet or just to tell tales. The getting up and down was relentless and I wasn't comfortable with them being locked out.

So now the door is only locked when we are all in the house.
Kids are free to come and go inside and out without having to ask permission to come back inside their own home.

Must point out it is pointless giving them a key as they really are only playing out front in the street.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 25/11/2018 10:51

Front door always locked as we rarely use it.Back door locked if we go upstairs or in bath etc

cricketmum84 · 25/11/2018 10:51

I always lock the front door, DH doesn't even think to lock it until bedtime and thinks I'm a bit OTT about it. It's good to see I'm not the only one who thinks about it!

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 25/11/2018 10:52

Our front door just locks if you close it - so you can open from the inside (I used to have nightmares/anxiety about noy being able yo get out in a fire) but its locked from the outside. So its thankfully always locked.

However it would be useful to "put it on the latch" as I remember doing at my mums when the kids pop in and out but I havent actually found out a way to do that with this door.

So yes, locked by design! I wasnt really aware until recently that other doors have to manually be locked when you leave/unlocked in a fire - are they older doors? Mine is fairly new but cheap boxy house.

ScreamingValenta · 25/11/2018 10:52

Yes, all of them. Apart from the risk of stealth-burglars, I think it's best to have their default position as locked, then there's less risk of leaving them unlocked if we go out.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 25/11/2018 10:53

(Did just think if someone was really clever they could piece together all someomes information online, work out who they are and this thread has now told them you have an unlocked door... be careful!)

Elderflower14 · 25/11/2018 10:55

I've been locking my doors more since a couple were murdered in their home fifteen minutes away a couple of years ago. Also more recently we have had vans broken into in our village and someone walked Into a house late at night took car keys and stole a car. All very worrying. 😔 😔 😔 😔

LivingDeadGirlUK · 25/11/2018 10:56

I always lock the door as a friend had her car stolen while at home. They walked in and grabbed the keys off a table.

We also get a lot of scammers at the door selling stuff etc

My partner often forgets which does annoy me.

mrsoutnumbered · 25/11/2018 11:00

I always always lock the door. I live near a very busy road with lots of people coming and going. But even when I lived on a quiet residential street I always locked the door.

My friends used to take the piss out of me for it, until she woke from a nap to find a burglar in her bedroom.

theboxofdelights · 25/11/2018 11:02

I lock the front door, back door leads to the garden with a high wall and fence so I don’t lock that during the day if I am here.

No one else in this house bothers though!

mydogisthebest · 25/11/2018 11:03

Front door is always locked but that is rarely used. Back door is not locked unless we go out (not even locked at night).

We have 2 big dogs though that would not let anyone in. During the day they like to go in and out to the garden so I would be forever locking and unlocking the door. In the summer it is just left open

crunchydatola · 25/11/2018 11:36

Sleepy small town in rural area. My door not locked when we're awake.
My children are scarier than any would-be intruder. Grin

Local Parent+toddler group I went to a few yrs ago, lots of women were saying the never lock their house or even car doors. People leave their car engines running when they pop into shop (nobody sitting in car). Local bicycles only sometimes locked up, too.

Badbadbunny · 25/11/2018 11:40

Yep, doors always locked whether we're in or out. I'd never dream of leaving a door unlocked. It's automatic to lock it again as we walk in.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 25/11/2018 11:41

No, but house is very secluded. I used to, in my old house.

irregularegular · 25/11/2018 11:42

No never. Apart from at night.

bringbackthestripes · 25/11/2018 11:47

I always lock the doors, DH NEVER does. It drives me mad. There are times I have arrived home to an empty house and the back door is unlocked because he has hung the washing out and not locked the door when he has come back in and then he has gone out of the front or I’ve got up in the morning and the doors are unlocked. I drive him mad because every time he tries to open a door it is locked. He’s wrong I’m right Grin
