Never thought about this but we never lock the door other than when we go to bed.
Talking to friends it seems that this is quite unusual , is it ?

Back always locked since our security cameras picked up someone from the nursing home behind our house walking around our back garden.

Front door only opens with a key. Double locked when we go out. Alarms on when we leave the house and downstairs alarm on when we are in bed.

My mum never locked the door unless it was night time. Some toerag walked in and lifted her car keys. Took her wee car joyriding then burned it out. She lives in a small town that is relatively crime free but instances of doors being tried/opened are becoming very common. A neighbour had her front door opened at 5.30 as she was getting ready for work and her bag was lifted from the hallway.

Yes for 2 reasons. 1. When I lived at home a man watched my mother leave the house and not lock the door, this was his opportunity to enter as there was now no cars out front he thought it was empty - wrong. He walked up the passage and my dog lay teeth bared at him in the doorway to the room I was in. I was confused as I didn't hear him enter the house and had never seen my dog act like that, so I went to investigate. Me a 15 year old girl home alone facing a drug addict on the Rob, luckily my dog stayed between us and he eventually realised he wouldn't win against a dog so he left, he left my house and attacked a young woman carrying her shopping in from the car and robbed her house. 2. The house I live in now is a 3 story and the living room is on the middle floor so wouldn't hear someone entering

Only just started locking the door in the day as toddler can reach the handle now.

Never did before as we are a busy family often in and out with regular visitors so it was just a habit as there never seemed much point. Would lock it if going out and overnight but not if just popping to the shop over the road. We do live in a very low crime, semi rural area, a lot of our neighbours even have the front door wide open all day in the summer (with an inner door closed but not locked). But crime is rising everywhere and I am hearing of more day time burglaries now so would start locking it anyway even without toddler flight risk.

My doors are always locked, I just feel more secure knowing they are locked.

GymNGin · 24/11/2018 23:00

It's always locked because once you shut the door you need a key to open it from the outside. I grew up in London and always felt safe but I would never leave my front door unlocked!

House4 · 24/11/2018 23:00

Always

ThePencil · 24/11/2018 23:01

Usually, yes. The odd time I leave it unlocked if I'm going to be in and out, but that's usually when I'm in the kitchen and can see the door anyway.

Also don't want the kids to escape, so it's always locked if they're in the house.

SPR1107 · 24/11/2018 23:02

Never locked unless going to bed until I had a child, now it's always locked and keys removed

Racecardriver · 24/11/2018 23:05

Have never ever lived in a house with unlocked doors. I grew up in a city. Currently live in a small town but have lived in villages and bigger towns too. I don’t understand the need to keep it unlocked-why?

katseyes7 · 24/11/2018 23:06

Always locked. l live on my own, and 28 years with the police taught me it only takes seconds for someone to sneak in.

Beingginger · 24/11/2018 23:06

I never do, my house often has people just coming round so I’d be forever getting up to answer the door. Plus the cat treats the place like a hotel so if I’m home I leave the back door open for her.
My grandma would often go out and leave the house unlocked, but she lived very very rurally (on a farm).

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/11/2018 23:10

All doors always locked, whether we’re in or out.

HopeGarden · 24/11/2018 23:15

We keep our doors locked.

Partly to make sure small DC can’t open the doors and wander off god knows where.

Partly because I know a few people who’ve had thieves sneak in and steal handbags etc when they’ve left doors unlocked.

SirNilsOlav · 24/11/2018 23:16

Our back door is always locked. The front door is yale so as PP have said is locked from the outside as soon as it shuts. When we go to bed, we do the extra lock thing so even with a key it shouldn't open (and I did once autopilot when I went to bed and locked DW out so we know it works Blush)

Between people I know it's probably 70-30 in favour of locked for houses, partially as the yale style locks are v common where we live.

In flats, I'd say 90% of the people I know don't lock their front door from the inside - which I always did and frequently got comments on being odd for!

starrynight19 · 24/11/2018 23:18

racecardriver it has never occurred to me to lock it , no real reason we just never have done.
Irony is friends on same road always do , low crime area but seems I am in the minority.

Yes.

Before I leave the room, I check and ensure the windows are closed and the door is closed and locked.

mum11970 · 24/11/2018 23:20

Nope, always unlocked when in and if only popping out.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 24/11/2018 23:23

door is always locked, would you be insured if someone came in and robbed your bag / car key and subsequently your car? I am pretty sure not.

ilovesooty · 24/11/2018 23:28

Always locked - front and back.

QueenCity · 24/11/2018 23:29

Always. Both front and back doors.

starrynight19 · 24/11/2018 23:30

rebeccawrongdaily never even thought about insurance , would I not be covered if I was on the premises ?

babysharkah · 24/11/2018 23:32

I always put the chain on during the day, it's a hangover from having small kids who couldn't be trusted not to open the door! Lock with deadlock at night.

EyUpOurKid · 24/11/2018 23:34

Usually yes. The toddler can reach the door handle and open the door, and we live seconds away from a main road.

TigerDroveAgain · 24/11/2018 23:35

Crikey

Only lock if we go out and frankly not bothered if we forget. I’d never dream of locking myself in the house
