Never thought about this but we never lock the door other than when we go to bed.
Talking to friends it seems that this is quite unusual , is it ?

Yes I do and everyone should do, burglarers are everywhere.... and it takes two second to open the door grab your car keys and go.

People are foolish who don’t!

HammerHorror · 25/11/2018 07:41

We live in a rural location - 3 houses within a mile and between two very nice little villages. Everyone keeps their doors unlocked and no one knocks.

I used to live in south London and had 3 locks on my door.

I lived in Santiago and had bars on my window as well as multiple locks on doors.

Furball · 25/11/2018 08:07

Please keep it locked

I had a lady just walk in a few weeks ago - she claimed she had gone into the wrong house YES YOU HAVE as she needed Mr x up the road.

But scary hard lesson to me and Ds eating breakfast. He would come home from school and leave the door unlocked then go up to his room and I would often say 'anyone can just walk in without you hearing them'...........He now locks the door

AgentProvocateur · 25/11/2018 08:12

Only if I’m going to have a snooze.

CandyMelts · 25/11/2018 08:16

Yes! Live in a naice fairly sleepy town and walk in crime is on the increase

Lazysundaymorning1 · 25/11/2018 08:21

Always lock once kids in bed as there room is next to the front door and would worry about them getting out. No one can get in without a key though so unlocked during the day.

RocketPockets · 25/11/2018 08:22

I lock the front door to our flat as the toddler can open it, and realised yesterday he can also open the door to the lift!
We locked it before as well though as someone in our block had their flat burgled when they'd left their door unlocked.

captainproton · 25/11/2018 08:29

A door on the latch is incredibly easy to open through the letterbox. I locked myself out once, paid a fortune for a locksmith to come round with a bent bit of pipe to open my door in about 10seconds. No forced entry.

When she locked us out on a BH by letting front door close, I found a hammer , coat hanger and duct tape, fashioned ourselves a contraption to open the front door via the letterbox. Kept it in the meter cupboard in case it happened again. Anyway I always double lock the door now, as it’s that easy to get inside otherwise.

Vagndidit · 25/11/2018 08:38

Always locked. Always. I'm in the middle of the city centre, right on a public bikeway/pedestrian path and have had numerous things nicked from the front of my home over the years, scooters, wreathes, parcels. I shudder to think what could have been taken from inside if given the opportunity.

glorious · 25/11/2018 08:42

Ours needs a key to open from the outside anyway but we don't double lock it for ease of getting out in a fire. We don't want to be scrabbling around for keys.

captainproton · 25/11/2018 09:00

A Door is not locked when closed on a latch. If all you need to do is open it with the internal handle. You might want to check your house insurance covers this.

DoveSecret · 25/11/2018 09:01

Always. Rural living.

Bojangles33 · 25/11/2018 09:02

I often leave it unlocked but am more vigilant since we've had a baby. It's quite a quiet cul de sac though so not a lot of people around apart from our neighbours

Notevenmyrealname · 25/11/2018 09:06

Yes. We have one of those front doors that doesn’t lock automatically so you can get in without a key. There’s a reasonable amount of crime where I live so I always think it’s better to be safe than sorry. I also remember when we first moved in, I’d forgotten to lock the door as in our old house, we had a latch automatically locked and my mil let herself in while I was upstairs with the children and it really pissed me off. When I asked her to not let herself in and wait after she’d knocked for me to open the door, she seemed really insulted and acted like I was weird (maybe I am). She does live in a little village though so maybe people are a little more familiar but I just think it’s the height of bad manners.

Weetabixandshreddies · 25/11/2018 09:06

Ours needs a key to open from the outside anyway but we don't double lock it for ease of getting out in a fire. We don't want to be scrabbling around for keys.

Ours too needs a key to open it from the outside. My husband had the same fire escape argument.

We got burgled last year while we slept. Took wallets, purses, bank cards and the car.

They popped the front door open pushing a screw driver between the frame and the door and then did the same to open the yale lock on the front door.

No damage, no noise. Took seconds.

Thankfully insurance paid out because the police proved forced entry.

We now triple lock the doors and have a bolt that stops the upvc door from being prised open. We keep the keys close to the front door so that in a fire we can get out.

LittleMachine · 25/11/2018 09:12

Yes, I do. I got broken into this year while I was in the house, despite my doors all being locked. They snapped the lock on the back door and stole both our cars and my purse.
So I would be really stupid to leave the doors open and invite them right in, plus my insurance wouldn’t look very kindly on it. We were interrogated enough as it was, and our doors were secured.

Notevenmyrealname · 25/11/2018 09:14

We leave our keys in the front door at night for easy exit in a fire. The letterbox is on the outside porch door so I’m fairly certain burglars couldn’t get at them and they can’t be seen through a window as we have frosted glass in the hallway.

tinytemper66 · 25/11/2018 09:19

Always! Too many reports of chancers around my place!

SockQueen · 25/11/2018 09:23

Always locked - we've been burgled this year and there have been lots of reports on the estate of doors being tried/people just walking in. Even if I'm at home I don't fancy facing down burglars!

ShotsFired · 25/11/2018 09:23

Most insurance policies will specify how you must close doors and windows in order for your insurance to be valid.

E.g. Mine says all windows with key locks must be locked shut overnight unless there is a person sleeping in that room.

For doors it is that all the locks I have specified on the policy are used overnight and when I am out.

Amazonian27 · 25/11/2018 09:26

Didn’t use to but now I do. We live in a nice area and has been a few burglaries during the day, Ex offenders going around door to door selling and a few shifty characters about in recent years so now both doors are locked whether I am in or out. Also I spend more room in the back of the house and can’t always hear the door so if someone wants in they have to knock or ring the bell.

ifigoup · 25/11/2018 09:33

We lock the door and remove the keys if in during the day because we live on a main road and have a toddler who can reach the lock and likes to make a break for freedom. At night we lock it but keep the keys in the lock in case of fire. Same with the back door. We live in a low crime area.

BringOutTheDancingGirls · 25/11/2018 09:42

Front door always locked. Scared ex might decide to come back.

I work in the garden office and can see the back door so that's unlocked during the day.

seven201 · 25/11/2018 09:55

I always lock it. Can't relax if it's not locked.

Burlea · 25/11/2018 09:57

If I'm in on my own I have always locked front and back door. This goes back to when I was a child. Mum, dad and us children moved house on a Wednesday, on the Thursday someone walked in the old house and raped the new owner. She happened to be not only a family friend she was our babysitter.
