Do you have a terrific battery pack or trains that for sure will have charge points? I'd bring a book & newspaper to read, myself.

Can't recommend a podcast without knowing what you like already. I go for political commentary but you might want fluffy mountain adventures or light romance for all I know.

Podcasts - I like the new Sarah Beeny one called Round The Houses. Crime ones I love are Serial, S-Town, Dirty John (brilliant) and Teacher’s Pet. Also hooked on Where Should We Begin with Esther Perel. It’s audio counselling sessions with couples. Also love the BBC Radio Four iPM ones and a new R4 one called Addicted to Sex which has different people’s stories to debate whether sec addiction really exists. I have loads of others but not sure what sort of stuff you’re into. A browse through the top charts on podcasts always throws up something I like.

Jupiterdawn · 17/11/2018 19:57

Thanks both. I’m open to anything other than fluffy romance or downton abbey type stories! I love the Serial & Dirty John podcasts too.

My go to's are No Such Thing As a Fish, Criminal and Radio 4 programmes such as the Now Show, Unbelievable Truth and Just a Minute. If you haven't already listened to it the first season of Serial is gripping! I also liked the first series of My Dad Wrote a Porno, and i used to listen to Stuff You Should Know frequently.

Oatomatom · 17/11/2018 20:02

Back catalogue of the Reith Lectures (Radio 4) will keep you going for ages. If that gets too heavy, some of the famous Letter From America episodes are still compelling listening.

Jupiterdawn · 17/11/2018 20:03

Thanks hopeandjoy16, they sound fab.

I’ve just listened to Joe Lycett’s audiobook ‘Parsnips, Buttered’ and it make my face hurt from laughing.

Sausagefingers9 · 17/11/2018 20:05

Adam Buxtons most recent episode with Tash Demetriou had me laughing along loads.
I’ve also recently enjoyed griefcast, Robert Peppers episode was very good.

Sausagefingers9 · 17/11/2018 20:06

Although I’m not sure about you but I hate listening to funny podcasts in public. So embarrassing sitting there laughing at seemingly nothing Grin

mollyblack · 17/11/2018 20:09

Adam Buxton
WTF with Marc Maron- there are hundreds!
The Guilty Feminist

froomeonthebroom · 17/11/2018 20:17

The Modern Mann is a great podcast. He interviews interesting (not celeb) people. My favourite was with a man who survived in the ocean for about 2 days after falling off a boat.

Doyoumind · 17/11/2018 20:20

Lots of interesting stuff to download on Radio 4. Second Dirty John and Serial.

greyspottedgoose · 17/11/2018 20:25

My dad wrote a porno, there's 4 series's now and it's very entertaining

MissMarplesKnitting · 17/11/2018 20:28

Though MDWAP is not one for a train if one has a tendency for laughing out loud.

I've had to stop the car more than once listening to it in the car, because nice been crying with laughter. On public transport you might look a bit crazy!!

The radio 4 comedy one is good. As is Woman's hour or desert island discs.

fruityb · 17/11/2018 20:29

Another one for Serial - I’m well and truly hooked!

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 17/11/2018 20:29

Agree with My Dad Wrote A Porno, and Adam Buxon.

Not sure if anyone mentioned Casefile - there's nearly 100 episodes of true crime in detail. Great 👍

TheEgyptianKing · 17/11/2018 20:31

If you’re into football, That Peter Crouch Podcast is really funny. There are about 9 episodes currently available.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/11/2018 20:32

There's some great suggestion in threads in the extremely well hidden podcast section of mumsnet which is bizarrely under the TV topic

bluebump · 17/11/2018 20:33

I like The High Low, I always come out of it with book recommendations which is always good!

outnumbered77 · 17/11/2018 20:43

Shanteram is a good forty odd hours on audible.

ForalltheSaints · 17/11/2018 20:49

Can you sleep on the train?

HistoriaTrixie · 17/11/2018 20:56

The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum is a really engrossing audiobook.

MrsChollySawcutt · 17/11/2018 21:02

You can download the whole of the superbly funny Cabin Pressure from Abu Dhabi to the final two Zurich episodes as podcasts. If you haven't heard it before you are in for a treat.
