Those metal water bottles - chillys

Dd has asked for a "chillys" water bottle. I think she means a metal bottle in general. Is this particular brand essential to get or will one of the 'cheaper' brands or shop ones do ok?
I don't mind paying for chillys if it will be 'better' IYSWIM

I got a "simple modern" water bottle from amazon. About half the price of chilly. Got one for DD and one for me. Look good, keep water cold (not tried it for hot), no more plastic bottles!

MrsAmaretto · 16/11/2018 21:19

That brand seems very “now”. My neice has asked for one too. I’ll be getting her that brand, not a cheaper ones as that’s what brand she requested. I’ve seen people at spin class using them & they should last a long time! They come in lots of designs (even Emma bridgwater).

EgremontRusset · 16/11/2018 21:26

S’well cost even more!
It does feel a bit wasteful, but if she specified the brand she probably wants that, and at least it isn’t plasticky tat.

littlecloudling · 16/11/2018 21:58

Check what pattern she wouldnlike? Don't put the patterned one in the dishwasher

Holidayshopping · 16/11/2018 22:02

I would get the chillys one if that’s what she’s asked for.

My DH always says that his parents always bought him lots of cheap crap versions of the things he actually wanted when he was little and he really hated it. He would have preferred just one present but the actual one he wanted-Scaletrix, rather than the half price cheapo version plus loads of other big (wow, that’s an impressive pile of presents we’ve given you!) boxes of cheaper versions of the stuff he asked for.

Alabasterangel6 · 16/11/2018 22:03

I’ve had an equivalent from willo for £5 and it’s just the same as the chilly DH has, without the jazzy pattern (its plain blue). It keeps water icy cold for hours and hours, as long as what you put in cold first obviously. It also kept a couple of glasses of wine very cold for an outdoor picnic in the summer. Not that this is the intended purpose but anyway!

SouthWestmom · 16/11/2018 22:03

We use Chillys - so far so good but the smaller one has loads of dents in it which is annoying.

totallyLosingIt · 16/11/2018 22:08

Home Bargains sell cheaper variants in a few different styles/sizes. I've got a 1L one from there and it is fantastic for both hot and cold drinks.

SouthWestmom · 16/11/2018 22:10

How old is she though? Do t get her a cheap version if she's old enough to care.

SnuggleBug7 · 16/11/2018 22:10

My DDs have Sho(?) ones - they are amazing, and about £15, so slightly cheaper than chilly. Keeps water cold for hours and hours. Also, they come in quite a few sizes.

JanetandJohn500 · 16/11/2018 22:21

Willow have some in pink, pale blue or plain metal. £5 each

VanGoghsDog · 16/11/2018 23:34

Mine is a lovely turquoise one from Sainsbury, about £6 I think. And yes, keeps water nice and cool for ages.

AGHHHH · 17/11/2018 03:34

I have a Chilly's, got it for my early morning job.

But it seems to work too well, I made it the night before and it was still too hot to drink the next morning... :S

Mousetrap3 · 17/11/2018 07:46

Do they end up going smelly? Or can you taste dishwasher taste when it’s been washed a few times? That always puts me off them sort of things!

twoheaped · 17/11/2018 07:49

I have a Chilly bottle and it does what it says, 24hrs later, the drink is still icy cold. I don't use mine for hot.
I don't have a dishwasher, just swill it in the hand wash and it doesn't smell.

GreenEggsHamandChips · 17/11/2018 07:49

Not if it's the pretty pattern she wants. I'd check

ArfArfBarf · 17/11/2018 07:51

I wouldn’t put a swell or chillys bottle in the dishwasher because it’ll take the pattern off/scratch the surface.

I was looking at these recently as want one for myself and someone online had done a test to see how well the knock off ones worked and they basically did just as well at keeping water the same temp. He speculated that they were probably all made in the same factory.

But I’m another who would get the brand of specifically asked for even if I personally thought it was a waste of money because it obviously has a value to her.

SuperstarDJ · 17/11/2018 07:54

It’s orobably the brand and the pattern she wants so I’d get her a Chillys if you can afford it.

Otherwise it’s the same as a teenager asking for a pair of Converse and receiving a pair of supermarket plimsolls (am fully aware that a teenager is unlikely to ask for a pair of converse nowadays Grin)

ThanosSavedMe · 17/11/2018 07:57

Love my Chilly bottle. If you afford it get her the brand she has asked for, just get her less.

I don’t think you can put them in the dishwasher though. And of them.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2018 08:01

DD1 has asked for one too. I got it in Urban Outfitters for £20. I agree that if she's asked for that particular brand, and you can afford it, to go for the one she's asked for.

RubyLux · 17/11/2018 08:11

Definitely only get a Chillys.
Knock offs are so upsetting.

Mousetrap3 · 17/11/2018 08:21

Thanks, I’d only want one for water so I think I’ll get one.

Sorry for the derail, but yes I’d buy the branded one if that’s what she’s asked for. I’m a softie though!

OddestSock · 17/11/2018 08:31

I’ve got a chillys one too. They’re brilliant for keeping things hot & cold. I’d get the brand if that’s what she’s asked for too

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 17/11/2018 08:33

Chillys always come up on Black Friday deals on Amazon so keep an eye out there

VickieCherry · 17/11/2018 08:35

If she's anywhere close to teenage, buy her the branded one. Yes they're ridiculously expensive compared to the knock-offs, but she won't use the cheap one do you may as well but the one she wants.

(My mum hated branding and refused to buy me anything with it. At 14 I just wanted to be like everyone else.)
