How do you wash broccoli?

Broccoli is my families favourite vegetable but I'm finding more and more bugs in it recently. It's really off putting.

How do you make sure you wash it good enough? Also would it hurt if a bug snook in?!?

I'm mindblown that some posters don't wash fruit and veg. It's amazing what one can assume about behaviour. It just never occurred to me to not wash it 🤷

SoyDora · 14/11/2018 19:46

It’s never really occurred to me to wash it! Not seen any ill effects yet.

I wash it whole upside down (stalk up so water runs in at that branch bits and out of the green floret-y bits.) Then I chop it up and put in colander and give another quick rinse.
You can make a DIY veg wash with bicarb and a splash of vinegar in water (which I did for about a month after finding slugs in a cauliflower)

I've never washed broccoli. I just chuck it in the steamer.

My DM soaks hers in cold water with added salt to kill any bugs.

TheWiseWomansFear · 14/11/2018 21:25

I don't wash any veg really...

But if I did I suppose I'd submerge it in water with some vinegar

TheWiseWomansFear · 14/11/2018 21:29

Then again I use frozen broccoli so Grin

Stillmonday · 15/11/2018 17:21

I always buy the shrink wrapped broccoli and there's not many occasions where I've 'not' found a bug, little slug or little fly!

Yes I steam my broccoli but it doesn't always remove the bugs. They are so tightly concealed in the florets!

I can't believe how many non washers there are!

Don't soak in salted water. The salt kills the bugs in situ. - wisdom according to my ancient cookery teacher.
She advised soaking in cold water and let the little blighters swim for it.

festivellama · 15/11/2018 18:38

Try buying it from another shop for a while and see whether theirs is less of a problem.

Itsnotmesothere · 15/11/2018 19:07

I was a non-washer of broccoli until I ate grit. When I wash my broccoli now, loads of bugs come out and yes the water is very gritty. I'm not too bothered by tiny bugs but am grossed out when I see half a slug in shrink-wrapped broccoli.

Crinkle77 · 15/11/2018 20:39

I don't wash either and I have never found bugs in broccoli.
