How do you wash broccoli?

Broccoli is my families favourite vegetable but I'm finding more and more bugs in it recently. It's really off putting.

How do you make sure you wash it good enough? Also would it hurt if a bug snook in?!?

Green caterpillars appear at a certain time of the year. I can never remember when that is until it's too late!
I usually chop it up and give it a quick rinse.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 14/11/2018 17:54

I cut it into florets, pop it in a sieve, and give it a rinse under the tap.

Elphame · 14/11/2018 17:55

I'm amazed at all the non washers. The amount of pesticides they use on the crop is worrying and I'd want to wash as much of them off as possible.

I don’t want to just run it under water because I think all the chemicals that get sprayed on it go in to all the nooks and crannies, so I soak it on a measuring jug, then rinse it.

TheWickedWitchofWestYorkshire · 14/11/2018 17:59

I just buy it frozen and cook it.

Bigonesmallone3 · 14/11/2018 18:01

I'm a non-washer 🤷‍♀️
the broccoli I buy is shrink wrapped and always looked clean to me

DappledThings · 14/11/2018 18:15

Don't wash any fruit or veg either. And never noticed any bugs. Maybe we're just eating them. Not noticed any extra crunch though!

Ellieboolou27 · 14/11/2018 18:19

Never used to wash it until I found loads of aphids on one once, I chucked it as put me off. Now I chop and rinse always.

almondsareforevermore · 14/11/2018 18:27

Washing does nothing to remove pesticides and preservatives, they are absorbed by the plant. I wash fruit when we eat the skin just because they have been handled.

WowOoo · 14/11/2018 18:30

I give it a quick rinse in the container it'll go in. I like to think that cooking it gets rid of major nasties from being handled.

BrokenWing · 14/11/2018 18:37

Never found a bug in my broccoli, just chop and give it a quick rinse under the cold tap. I suspect I've been eating bugs. 🤮

HesARealDouche · 14/11/2018 18:40

I buy the shrink wrapped broccoli and often find bugs. I rinse and then boil Grin

janisposh · 14/11/2018 18:41

I'm amazed at all the non washers

Im amazed that anyone thinks a rinse under the tap is going to do more than a ten minute boil Grin

MrsGollach · 14/11/2018 19:09

@PazRaz10 Shock

MrsGollach · 14/11/2018 19:10

[janisposh] - so you are happy to boil your dirty vegetables in the dirty water. Mmmm lovely.

janisposh · 14/11/2018 19:18

mrs

I don't even boil MY broccoli. I steam it.

It just amused me.

AwdBovril · 14/11/2018 19:19

I chop, then rinse it in a bowl with some fruit & vegetable detergent diluted in water, while I'm sorting the other ingredients. Then rinse again. I found 5 spiders in a head of it once... Envy Broccoli is by far the worst for harbouring bugs.

Whatififall · 14/11/2018 19:21

Buy frozen

bengalcat · 14/11/2018 19:22

I don't wash fruit or veg - never found bugs or crunched on one

IceniSky · 14/11/2018 19:22

Non washer until I discovered a green grub. Put me right off it.

WhatHaveIFound · 14/11/2018 19:25

I'm amazed at all the non washers. The amount of pesticides they use on the crop is worrying and I'd want to wash as much of them off as possible.

Surely you'd have to use a detergent to remove pesticide residue rather than a quick rinse under the tap. After all we use soap on our hands.

DappledThings · 14/11/2018 19:25

There's such a thing as vegetable detergent?

WhatHaveIFound · 14/11/2018 19:30

I have seen it advertised but i don't buy it. I'm a non washer but eat mostly organic veg.

Amazon one here

janisposh · 14/11/2018 19:33

fruit & vegetable detergent

Mindblown Shock

Howhot · 14/11/2018 19:37

I found a caterpillar on my chopping board once. After I'd finished eating....

I'd chop it up then rinse it in sieve. I still forget though.
