What inconsistency in a TV show you love drives you mad?

For me it's one in Gilmore Girls

It's established canon that Lorelei ran away at age 16, and has lived in Stars Hollow for 15 years.

It is also established canon that Lorelei can't cook and has basically relied on Luke to feed her child since she was small.

An ex girlfriend of Luke's is introduced to the show, despite the fact she has lived in the small town before and dated the guy whose cafe Lorelei practically lives in, she has apparently never met or even heard of this woman who the entire town knows well.

It doesn't add up

(I overanalyse Gilmore Girls massively all the time, I find the psychology really interesting Lorelei is blatantly an antihero masquerading as a hero)BlushGrin

In the OC, (don’t judge, I LOVED the OC) the first episode Marissa has a little sister called Caitlin who is visibly about 9 and is obsessed with ponies.

2 years later, she comes home from boarding school as a sassy fifteen year old and goes round flirting and snogging with everyone Confused

Aaah a Neighbours personality transplant complete with replacement head!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

"Once in every generation..." But Kendra and Faith are both very close in age to Buffy. The next slayer should be someone young enough to be Buffy's daughter. At the time the first slayer was created girls probably gave birth very young so if that would be maybe 13 or 14 years, and if the rules have been updated to reflect the current average age of first time mothers in the culture of the most recently deceased slayer then the next slayer would surely be more than 20 years younger than Buffy, so not even born at the time of Buffy's first (brief) death.

It kind of dilutes the specialness of the slayer if there's always going to be someone there to immediately take her place. I like the idea of there being a gap where the vampires start to get too comfortable without a slayer to keep them in check then she comes along and restores the equilibrium.

The very first episode of Outnumbered.
They talk about it being the first day back at school but then mention last week’s homework.

HugeAckmansWife · 13/11/2018 23:10

Also in Buffy.. One character would be in a jumper and coat and another in a strappy vest... Is it hot or cold?? And why did her dad not even turn up at any point at the start of season 6 when she's back from the dead?

Valasca · 13/11/2018 23:16

“ Is it hot or cold??”

It’s L.A. You've got surfers in the freezing Pacific Ocean and people walking along the beach wearing coats and mittens.

PawneeParksDept · 13/11/2018 23:41

Oh and another one from West Wing

Toby is a character of almost permanently suppressed rage. He is fiercely defensive of the sanctity of the Office of the President and the honour of the position and will absolutely LOSE it on anyone who mildly crosses the line.

Additionally I feel that rewatches reveal that he has a never to be disclosed passion for CJ, his old friend.

When there is a national security leak, by the book Toby stands by and watches while CJ comes to the brink of losing her job, even though it's him the entire time.

Completely out of character!

Not a TV show, but Grease: what the hell is the time frame the film is supposed to have taken place over? It begins with them starting a new school year as seniors after the summer break. In Miss Magee's "welcome back" announcement on day 1 she invites them all to come to the pep rally bonfire. They do, where Rizzo brings Sandy and Danny together and Frenchie invites Sandy to her sleepover that night. Same night, Rizzo climbs out of the window and goes off with Kenickie and they have the unprotected sex. Then at the drive-in she says she has missed her period, so only a matter of weeks after the sleepover which was in the first week of the school year. Yet at the end they are at their graduation carnival (presumably the following June?) and Rizzo tells Kenickie it was a false alarm and she isn't pregnant. I'm guessing it didn't take her the full school year to work that out.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 14/11/2018 14:49

Re Buffy's dad not coming back at the beginning of season 6, I don't think that's so much of an issue as he probably didn't know she was dead in the first place, but why didn't he come back, even for a short while, after Joyce died in season 5? Didn't he care that his daughters were grieving and could possibly have done with some support from their other parent? And why wasn't he supporting Dawn at all, not even financially, during season 6? She was still a child and he was her only living parent.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/11/2018 14:58

Did Buffy's Dad know about Dawn? She wasn't born to Buffy's parents, she was inserted into the family and memories were altered, but they may not have bothered to alter Buffy's Dad's memory if he wasn't around.

PawneeParksDept · 14/11/2018 16:42

There are loads of them in Greys Anatomy but the one that stands out is Callie claiming to be enormously wealthy due to having a trust fund from the death of her father, and of knowing so much about cars due to being the lone girl in a sibling group of brothers.

Later, her father appears in the show and around the same time she is shown rowing with her sister on the phone. Hmm

Toby is my favourite in the West Wing. The security leak was played as breakdown after the death of his brother. But your absolutely right. Toby would have taken to CNN at prime time or just screamed it to reporters in the whitehouse. He was so moral and fierce he would have gladly faced prison for what was right. I hate how they wrapped up his story. I also can’t really watch the actor j anything else.

ruby1234 · 14/11/2018 16:52

When Heartbeat was on years ago. Lots of it was filmed in Whitby, where I was brought up, so I know the town well.
Characters would be running along street 1 and turn a corner and be in street 2... only they could never have done that as street 1 was half the town away from street 2.
Happened regularly. Very annoying.

PawneeParksDept · 14/11/2018 16:54

I know right? @Flashingbeacon

He's in the good doctor at the moment and I watched a couple and I was just like

TOBYYYY WHY YOU SO OLD?

He and Bradley Whitford really have not aged well.

Allison Janney still looks amazing.

Rob Lowe is some kind of vampire

I also hate it in West Wing when Toby's ex wife won't remarry him because he's "too sad"

OP posts:
Flashingbeacon · 14/11/2018 16:58

Bradley Whitford is playing such different characters I love it.

Rob Lowe is probably a vampire and I would not be the least surprised if he runs for president one day in real life.

When Toby’s wife won’t marry him was a brilliant example of his character. He was so selfless and moral he couldn’t get angry with her or pretend to be anything different. I loved him because of it.
Although DH definitely is cheerier than Toby!

Boyskeepswinging · 14/11/2018 17:02

The Grease thing has also bothered me since I first saw it in the cinema. The other thing that confuses me is why Danny sees none of his friends all summer. When I was at school I spent a lot of time with my friends over the summer holiday (pre X box natch)

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 14/11/2018 17:04

Comtesse, Grease is set over a whole school year — watch the sports Danny is trying out for. I think it's football/wrestling/basketball/athletics. Kind of equivalent to an English film showing rugby and hockey as shorthand for winter and cricket and athletics for summer. I think it's more obvious if you're American though!

Kannet · 14/11/2018 17:06

In gavin and Stacey. Gwen has a two bedroom house so where did Jason sleep when he lived at home

Boyskeepswinging · 14/11/2018 17:19

Polka, it's supposed to be set over a full year but Rizzo's pregnancy scare doesn't add up. As per Comtessa's post.

mostdays · 14/11/2018 17:38

I thought Rizzo's pregnancy scare was linked to Leo whatshisface, not Kenickie? "Don't worry about it Kenickie, it was somebody else's mistake"?

SavageBeauty73 · 14/11/2018 17:45

@Kannet I always thought they moved after Stacey's dad died and Jason moved to Spain.

Boyskeepswinging · 14/11/2018 21:00

OK, now I'm going to have to watch Grease again ...

goose1964 · 14/11/2018 21:04

In the Simpsons it is established that Marge had Bart when she was 18 and Bart's is 10 so that makes them 28 but they are both obviously middle aged

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 14/11/2018 21:06

Or that's just what 28 looks like if you're married to Homer. Homer looks so old because of his poor lifestyle, bad diet and heavy drinking.
