What inconsistency in a TV show you love drives you mad?

For me it's one in Gilmore Girls

It's established canon that Lorelei ran away at age 16, and has lived in Stars Hollow for 15 years.

It is also established canon that Lorelei can't cook and has basically relied on Luke to feed her child since she was small.

An ex girlfriend of Luke's is introduced to the show, despite the fact she has lived in the small town before and dated the guy whose cafe Lorelei practically lives in, she has apparently never met or even heard of this woman who the entire town knows well.

It doesn't add up

(I overanalyse Gilmore Girls massively all the time, I find the psychology really interesting Lorelei is blatantly an antihero masquerading as a hero)BlushGrin

OMG, Marge and Homer CANNOT be younger than me.

ReginasLeftFlangie · 14/11/2018 22:46

In Gavin and Stacey, Mick asks Ness if she drives, and she answers, no but i loves a good ride. Then later in the series she drives the truck to Essex full of Staceys stuff.

Meesh77 · 14/11/2018 22:50

Ness is a lorry driver!

ReginasLeftFlangie · 14/11/2018 22:51

Yes but when asked if she drives before that, she's says no

BevBrook · 14/11/2018 22:56

I have been mocked for this before, because it’s Red Dwarf, which is a comedy and thus not supposed to make sense, but it still bothers me that 3 million years later nothing has rotted away or disintegrated on the ship, but the crew have become small piles of dust.

PawneeParksDept · 14/11/2018 23:10

Being a contrarian is Nessa's personality though.

Also Gilmore Girls, Emily cattily refers to her pleasure at her mother in laws death in Episode 1 or 2.

Said mother in law appears in the same series, alive and well and they hold a funeral for her in a later season

In the Simpsons it is established that Marge had Bart when she was 18 and Bart's is 10 so that makes them 28 but they are both obviously middle aged
One of the things that makes The Simpsons stand out is that there is no concept of time.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 14/11/2018 23:20

Don't know if this counts but the way Skylar (in breaking bad) berates Marie for shop lifting the tiara. She obviously shouldn't have done it but Marie gave it to her as a present. Skylar only found out because she tried returning it. She acted as though Marie set out to personally set her up. She acted way worse than Marie did when she became aware of Walts and Skylar illegal actions.

Pawnee when Lorelai and Luke get together it’s established they’ve only known each other for 8 years. And that’s in season 5 when Lorelai is 36. So she only met him when she had been in SH for 11 years already?! How? And I’m sure it’s mentioned that he knew Rory when she was younger that that.

Although I think they tried to explain the Rachel thing by having Sookie say something about lorelai being really busy for that time that she was around (which also makes no sense).

SgtFredColon · 14/11/2018 23:37

Callie claiming to be enormously wealthy due to having a trust fund from the death of her father

I don’t remember that being from the death of her father though? I thought it was just from her father being rick?

SgtFredColon · 14/11/2018 23:37

Rich I mean

PawneeParksDept · 14/11/2018 23:40

@SgtFredColon

Luke definitely makes reference to remembering the time Rory had chickenpox and other 'you were cute when you were little' reminiscences

I'm fairly certain that Callie does say her father died but I haven't seen the episode in a long while

Yes I always thought it was strange when they brought in the 8 years thing. It would have been different if they said they only became friends 8 years earlier but they didn’t know each other at all??!

SgtFredColon · 14/11/2018 23:43

And everyone in the whole town knows each other!!

peonysandhotcrossbuns · 14/11/2018 23:45

I think Rizo saying somebody else's mistake she's referring to it being a mistake she made in Having sex with Kenike.

SgtFredColon · 14/11/2018 23:46

In Friends, they say that Jack and Judy love Ross more as he was a medical marvel as they thought Judy was barren. But later they say that they got married as Jack had got Judy pregnant.

PawneeParksDept · 14/11/2018 23:51

@SgtFredColon

Yes that's what I mean - even if, at the beginning Lorelei was a teenage maid living in a tool shed and without the funds for Luke's - she always says that the town really rallied around them, and Rory took dance at Miss Patty's when little. Luke has lived there his entire life, it's impossible they hadn't met, the town is tiny and has a huge emphasis on community events

SgtFredColon · 14/11/2018 23:56

Yup no idea why they went with that.

Also when Jess arrives they say Jess’s dad walked out two years earlier but later it says he left when Jess was a baby (and Jess doesn’t recognise him in the diner)

StingsandThings · 14/11/2018 23:58

If we are doing red dwarf...

When Rimmer finds out Lister gave him 8 months of his memory as a present, Rimmer says, "that's why I had my appendix out twice" (implying once in his real memory i.e. as himself and once in the transplanted memory i.e. as Lister) but in season 6 Legion takes Lister's appendix out on camera to save him from peritonitis. I may be overly invested but it always bugged me!

Don't get me started on Friends- so inconsistent!

PawneeParksDept · 15/11/2018 00:14

Friends is most inconsistent when it comes to Rachel and Chandlers relationship and Phoebes convoluted backstory

OP posts:
Purpleartichoke · 15/11/2018 04:27

On HIMYM, when Barney draws the hot crazy scale in the air, he does it incorrectly. It bugs me to an irrational level.

MoggEatMoggWorld · 15/11/2018 14:05

I know the Simpsons has been mentioned and this isn’t an inconsistency per se but Maggie is meant to be about 9 months old I think (less than a year anyway) so in every single episode, Marge is about 9mths post partum. Blows my mind.

TheZeppo · 15/11/2018 18:18

Don’t know if this counts, but it always bugged me in Buffy that no one mentioned that Joyce’s brain problems began shortly after a bunch of weird monks shoved a loads of random memories in her head...

lots33 · 15/11/2018 18:24

OMG i have watched Grease, since I was 10, thousands of times - I’m in my forties. I’ve never considered the time line. I’m supposed to be intelligent!😂😂
