Ds is 7 (just) and I think today is the day, but is he a little late? 20 mins we've been going so far and slowly he's getting there, but curiosity has the better of me, when did your children learn? I think I learned about the age of 5... maybe

4 - ready for school

NotUmbongoUnchained · 10/11/2018 12:27

One of my brothers is 26 and he can’t tie his Grin

FissionChips · 10/11/2018 12:27

Dd is six, I’ve given up and replaced her laces with those no-tie ones.

Around 6, thanks to lots of perseverance.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 10/11/2018 12:32

DS1 was about 4 or 5, DS2 6.

DH said to DS1 that if he learned to tie his laces he'd take him on a helicopter ride if he learned to do them. When it was DS2's turn he bought him a Twix to celebrate. I love that it sums up the first-time-parenting versus the second-time-parenting. Poor DS2.

Ohyesiam · 10/11/2018 12:32

Dd 4 , ds 11Shock

NoSquirrels · 10/11/2018 12:33

Go on YouTube, search fir “easy method shoe laces”. My DD cracked it at 6 in 10 minutes watching that!

GreenTulips · 10/11/2018 12:34

4 before school

DD wanted laces on her shoes anabolic she wasn't having them unless she learnt

Try 2 different couloured laces so they can see better

dementedpixie · 10/11/2018 12:34

Dd was about 10. Ds was about 8. They tended to wear Velcro shoes/ trainers. Dd had elastic laces for a while too

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 10/11/2018 12:38

I can't remember how old my 2 were but DS helps coach some 5-7 year olds at a football club and he says he spends a ridiculous amount of time tying their football boot laces because they can't!!

Taffeta · 10/11/2018 12:43

When they had shoes that needed laces

DS footy boots - about 6
DD trainers/school shoes - about 8

DD picked it up much quicker than DS - because she was older

Lovethetimeyouhave · 10/11/2018 12:43

Wow! Varying ages! We have success with Ds! So yay!

Ds 20 next week, has never been able to do them, or tie a bow or knot
He's tried for years, and just cannot get his head or hands around it

YerAuntFanny · 10/11/2018 12:47

Mine are 5 and 12, neither of them can tie.

We've shown eldest every video, book and method we can find but he just can't do it 🤔

BroomstickOfLove · 10/11/2018 12:47

When they grew out of velcro fastening shoes at around the age of 9. They both picked it up within half an hour.

giftsonthebrain · 10/11/2018 13:10

4, it was a requirement to be able to do this before starting school.
Get this! They expected all children to be able to change in and out of clothing for PE. Which included lace up runners.
They were only allowed to miss 3 PE sessions before failing the academic year and having to do kindergarten over.

wonkylegs · 10/11/2018 13:15

9 because he'd been avoiding and procrastinating for so long but he managed just fine to learn when he wanted football boots like his friends that only came with laces!
No learning issues just stubbornness.

LinoleumBlownapart · 10/11/2018 13:17

between 5 and 8 depending on the child.

Cachailleacha · 10/11/2018 13:18

I think at 6. There's not really the need for it at young ages anymore as you can just buy velcro shoes. My child had a friend over and they had velcro school shoes at age 11.

Moussemoose · 10/11/2018 13:27

Biancadelriosback · 10/11/2018 13:42

DS is nearly 2 and can tie mine -in a lovely big knot and usually together-

Biancadelriosback · 10/11/2018 13:43

Ah, strike through fail!

wendz86 · 10/11/2018 14:26

My dd1 was just over 7. Never really wore many shoes with laces before .

mycelialnetwork · 10/11/2018 14:33

Dd has just learned aged just 7. She tried before, but since most of her shoes are velcro or zip up (boots) there really wasn't too much need. Now she has some trainers with laces and she's finally managed to do it after a fair bit of practice.

TheNoodlesIncident · 10/11/2018 16:01

Mine was nine but in fairness he'd always had shoes and trainers with velcro or zips.

He got the hang of it by practising - he had to tie at least four acceptable bowknots before he could have screen time.

About the same time he was learning to tie his school tie by himself - three acceptable half-windsors before he could have screen time.

Guess how we get him to practise his musical intrument... Wink
