I still struggle with David Bowie dying when he did , he had just brought out a new album and thought all was well . He and Pink Floyd were my childhood music .
Also Freddy Mercury, just feel so sad that such a talented and versatile man died too young when now people with aids live long happy lives .
People I have never met but feel so much sadness that they have gone .

yes a celebrity can touch your life, impact upon it greatly. Either directly through their art, music, books, personality, outlook/campaign.......... or from what they represent ! to take bob and paula, so many ''archetypes'' in there. Same with Diana and her death. Amy Winehouse.

A stranger, a total stranger represents nothing and symbolises nothing to you.

I used to feel the same way that you did (I was quite scathing of a friend that reacted strongly to Kurt Cobain's death) and was surprised when I felt deeply about the death of a celebrity.

Maybe yours is yet to come or (as you say) you never develop such an attachment.

OrcinusOrca · 15/11/2018 22:47

Michael Jackson. Grew up adoring him even though I'm reasonably young (thriller was before I was born). I had tickets to see This Is It for my 18th. He seemed so resilient yet kind, and was a master of his crafts. I had an awfully difficult childhood and music was everything to me, so it hit me quite hard when he died.

JaimeLannister · 15/11/2018 23:05

Judith Barsi. I was a massive Don Bluth fan as a child, especially All Dogs Go To Heaven and The Land Before Time. Such a senseless waste of a young life.

MeMeMeow85 · 15/11/2018 23:10

Jill Dando. No idea why it upset me. I think it was the shock of her just being murdered randomly at her own front door

JaguarsLoveWater · 16/11/2018 04:00

When my OH told me Robin Williams had died I burst into tears. He was quite shocked. He said he didn't realise I was so fond of him. I thought he had said 'Robbie Williams'. So obviously, I have a deeper connection to Robbie Williams than I maybe realised.

I am quite fond of Robin Williams too. I did feel guilty after.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 16/11/2018 07:18

Has anyone mentioned David Bowie yet?

anonkneemouse · 16/11/2018 07:53

Princess Diana
Robin Williams

ZaZathecat · 16/11/2018 08:04

Freddy, George, and also Karen Carpenter

Lovemademe · 16/11/2018 08:23

John Thaw

HoppingPavlova · 16/11/2018 08:40

Elvia Presley and John Lennon.

However the huge one for me was David Bowie. Cried for hours when I heard and intermittently for days after. He was my first ever concert, vale Ziggy.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 16/11/2018 10:55

Yeah, I saw the thread title and thought Bowie, too. It's not even like I'm a massive fan, but I think Jarvis was right when he said Bowie was like a lighthouse for everyone that's a bit weird, that he somehow made it OK to be a kook. I was devastated by the news, it's really hard to explain.

AsleepAllDay · 18/11/2018 08:32

@ballsdeep Ariana said herself that it was a toxic relationship that she couldn't stay in. I'm sure she misses him a lot though

ForalltheSaints · 18/11/2018 09:05

Kirsty MacColl, as I had walked past her only a few weeks previously, and given how young she was.

poppy196 · 18/11/2018 20:46

@ForalltheSaints Yes definitely Kirsty, so very sad that she died so young and no one was ever punished for her death , all so very wrong .
And she died while protecting her son . Someone should have paid the price for poor sons growing up without a mother.

Lena Zavaroni.
Extraordinarily talented and tragically mismanaged young woman

BringOnTheScience · 18/11/2018 22:12

Terry Pratchet, Freddie Mercury, David Bowie.

I was a primary teacher when Bowie died. Spent the day playing his music between lessons and failing attempting to explain why he was so special.

Pratchett - even though we all knew he haf Alzheimer's, I just could not believe tbat there'd be no more Vimes, Nanny Ogg Luggage or excruciating puns that took entire chapters to set up.

And Freddie. ... words are inadequate.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 19/11/2018 13:29

Timmy Mallet

GandalfsRing · 19/11/2018 14:48

Timmy mallet isn’t dead

N0b0dysMot · 19/11/2018 17:07

Poor timmy!
Is it christopher biggins who is dead?
I used to mix him up with timmy mallet

VerbeenaBeeks · 19/11/2018 17:24

Christopher Biggins isn't either, he's still about! This place is as bad as Twitter for fake deaths Smile

Ladymargarethall · 19/11/2018 17:41

Victoria Wood

Endinsight9 · 26/11/2018 10:52

Jeremy Brett. Loved him as Sherlock. The most handsome but tortured man.
