I still struggle with David Bowie dying when he did , he had just brought out a new album and thought all was well . He and Pink Floyd were my childhood music .
Also Freddy Mercury, just feel so sad that such a talented and versatile man died too young when now people with aids live long happy lives .
People I have never met but feel so much sadness that they have gone .

I felt incredibly sad when I heard that John Lennon had been murdered.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 09/11/2018 19:25

Terry Pratchett (as my username suggests). I cried. Which was awkward, as I was at work. I had to go and sit in the loo while I composed myself.

Also Diana Wynne Jones. I love her books to distraction and even though they are ostensibly children's books, I still reread many of them now in my 40s. I can't wait to read them with DD, and I still can't believe she's gone. I cried when I learned she had died too.

I also cried when I heard The Bear (AKA My Sad Cat) had died.

George Michael was my absolute hero and I was heartbroken when he died. However, I was more affected by the death of Terry Wogan. I cried like a member of my family died and whenever they do tributes to him I sob like a baby. It’s ridiculous really. I’d never even met the man Confused

PolaDeVeboise · 09/11/2018 19:26

Without a doubt, George Michael. I was a massive fan for years, and expected I'd be upset when he went. However, the depth of feeling has really surprised me. Every time there's a big concert or event, I get a pain in my stomach at the thought he wont be performing. Friends keep suggesting we go and see a tribute act - I just can't - how dare they?

BertieDrapper · 09/11/2018 19:27

Massively affected by Robin Williams death.
I can't think of one film of his that isn't brilliant.
I remember watching Mrs Doubtfire as a kid, my parents were divorced and I really related to it... plus my dad looks a lot like him!!
Hard to imagine that someone who made so many people laugh was in so much pain and sadness.

BoneyBackJefferson · 09/11/2018 19:27

these and Burt Reynolds

Terry Wogan, never really appreciated him fully, but when he died & Chris Evans played all the 'Janet & John' clips I had to pull over - sobbing with laughter, and regret of what I never really appreciated...

PieintheSky2 · 09/11/2018 19:29

Princess Diana - I was in Portugal when I heard on holiday with my family and all I wanted to do was get back to London.

For some reason - Aryton Senna. Such a shock. I tuned in to watch the F1 highlights and instead it was all about him. Left me dazed for a couple of days...

sparklyllama · 09/11/2018 19:30

Peaches Geldof...…….so sad.

Autumnchill · 09/11/2018 19:36

And Linda McCartney. I use to work for UB and manned the LMc Careline so when I heard the news over the weekend, I knew what we were in for when we went back to work.

And weirdly Percy Thrower. I was driving to Leeds Castle for a day out and we were sat in a traffic jam and the news came on and I was so sad about it as he seemed a genuinely lovely person.

DeltaG · 09/11/2018 19:37

I was very sad to hear when BBC Africa presenter, Komla Dumor, had died. He was only 41 and left 3 children.

Michael Jackson too. Still can't quite believe he's gone.

I'm going to very sad when David Attenborough goes too.

blueangel1 · 09/11/2018 19:39

I was gutted when Freddie Mercury died it made me quite depressed.

Was also really shocked when Victoria Wood died and I can't quite believe she's gone.

Another vote for The Bear (My Sad Cat) too.

BettyOBarley · 09/11/2018 19:40

Gary Speed.

I just felt so sad for him and his family.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 09/11/2018 19:40

Aaarggh id forgotten some of these people had died Sad
Robin Williams had Lewy Body dementia
For me, I’ve been really affected by
David Bowie
Robin Williams
Dolores
George Michael

blueangel1 · 09/11/2018 19:41

@DeltaG I know what you mean about David Attenborough, he's a national treasure. I want him to live forever.

blueangel1 · 09/11/2018 19:42

@BettyoBarley Gary Speed really saddened me too, he seemed such a nice guy.

RedDwarves · 09/11/2018 19:43

Michael Jackson's death still upsets me almost a decade on.

Alan Rickman because Harry Potter has been such a big part of my life since I was a young child.

But yes, Michael Jackson above all.

RedDwarves · 09/11/2018 19:47

Oh, and the other one is Alexander McQueen for me.

DuggeesWooOOooggle · 09/11/2018 19:47

Not exactly a celebrity but I felt shocked to the core by the beheading of Ken Bigley. Just the brutality of it, and the fact we knew he was being held hostage, we'd seen videos of him in captivity and we couldn't save him. Horrific.

Good old Terry Wogan. One of the good guys.

PatchworkElmer · 09/11/2018 19:52

I cried when Terry Wogan died. Such a lovely man, whose voice kept me company when I was doing a job that made me desperately unhappy.

Makinglists · 09/11/2018 19:56

John lennon - i was about 11 and had just discover the Beatles. The way he died and he was such an Icon - left me in shock for.days.

More recently victoria wood, so funny, so ordinary, so full of energy. Sad.day Rip victoria you brought me much laughter and joy.

Amber0685 · 09/11/2018 19:58

David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Princess Diana

catsandogs · 09/11/2018 20:01

Loads - Freddie Mercury and Michael Hutchence were two early ones. Since I lost my dad is seems that someone well known dies every other week...I suppose they always did but I'm hyper aware of it just now.

elfycat · 09/11/2018 20:04

Michael Jackson. I mourned for the loss of any chance he had to heal everything and find himself in the mess his life had become.

Robin Williams. I was in the car with DH and suicide is just tragic (family history backstory). If only people could reach out; but I understand not being able to as a part of it.

Terry Pratchett. Heart broken with the illness. No one deserves that, but of everyone he deserved it least of all.

Freddie Mercury. I was a student nurse in a big London hospital's chest with 50% AIDS patients due to the pneumonia ward, when he died. Beautiful man and voice. Gutted he died before I got to see Queen live, but I think he helped bring AIDS and homosexuality as a thing to be accepted to people who might not have had an open mind otherwise (looking at you bigoted uncles of mine).

I'm not including those who are famous 'because' of their deaths - but so many, and so many children

mossyroundhill · 09/11/2018 20:10

Victoria Wood. Her humour is so comforting to me and I admired her so much; I grew up in a family with a very Northern sense of humour. I always put my As Seen on TV box set on when I feel like watching something homely. I cried all evening when I heard she died.

Terry Wogan and Robin Williams. Didn't cry but felt so sad. Both of them just seemed like lovely people.

Caroline Aherne and Liz Smith. Always get a lump in my throat watching the Royle Family.
