What odd things do you see on your commute?

A road near me has at least three houses where people appear to lock themselves in the front porch to smoke. The door to the house is shut behind them, but so is the porch door. Even when the weather is positively balmy they stand there looking like they are in the Mr and Mrs soundproof booth as it slowly fills up with smoke. One bloke even has a little stool he sits on in there.

It completely mystifies me. All these houses have back gardens, as far as I can work out, yet these people stand in full view of the road in their dressing gowns, smoking furiously in their self imposed little cell and probably stinking out their downstairs hallway.

What possible explanation can there be? What odd stuff do you see on your way to and from work?

Wasn't exactly a commute but my kids were competitive swimmers and early one Sunday morning, as we were heading to a pool for a competition we saw a man walking a goat, he had a ferret in one hand and a shotgun over his shoulder...

@EvaHarknessRose that's so cute

LinoleumBlownapart · 08/11/2018 22:11

Yesterday I saw a man transporting a wheelbarrow on his back, he was riding a motorbike.
Normally it's grazing cart horses, escaped cows and drunks sleeping with their heads in the road.

If I go to work early enough, I often see the elephants from the local zoo being taken for their morning walk (from the back of the zoo you can get onto a playing field which is on the main road).

Used to commute by train to London. Once happened upon a guy quietly vomiting into an A4 manila envelope in the middle of an otherwise empty carriage. He looked up, muttered "Sorry" and carried on puking.

I am loving this thread

Pywife2 · 08/11/2018 22:30

Loads of pigs troughing down, with starlings all over their backs.

ginghamstarfish · 08/11/2018 22:34

Not here but when I was living abroad some years back, on the bus to work almost every morning I would see bears - this was in a major city, and these poor creatures were 'dancing bears' being led on a chain to their pitch for the day. It used to upset me and I'm very glad to know it's now illegal and the surviving bears were rescued.

On my commute I get this cat sat in the window of this house it’s never there until I walk just buy it leaps up and stares at me. It sits behind the blind to I don’t no how.

StereophonicallyChallenged · 08/11/2018 22:40

@Ihope Different clothes, all in varying shades of green.

@choirs I wonder if you are near me Grin I'd love it if she has a green car too. But I only see her walking!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 08/11/2018 22:45

Oh this thread has made me howl in places. Sit Up Larry and his socks! Elephants, Elvises ( Elvii?) Penny Farthing man. You couldn't make this shit up, there are some odd 'uns out there!

This has reminded me that almost every day I see a man going through London Bridge station who wears a backpack with speakers in it, so we are all treated to his Eminem fixation at full blast.

Some of my journey is on a 'big train' and along the back of a particular row of houses there are several cats who like to have a snooze on their shed roofs. I always feel like it's going to be a good day if I see a full complement of cats on sheds. A bit like not stepping on the cracks in the pavement!

When I used to take DD to nursery, we'd regularly pass a young woman presumably commuting on a unicycle. To be fair to her we were on a cobbled together ancient cargo trike, but that passes for normal round here. The unicycle did look hard work - no gears. Though I never saw her fall.

Pippinfi · 08/11/2018 22:58

I used to regularly see a man who had a large pot belly walking with his shirt open, didn't matter what the weather he'd have that shirt open.

SealSong · 08/11/2018 23:01

Proper chuckled at bin bag child (poor thing) and Ugly David Essex.
My commute (on foot) in Oxford used to take me past a house that had a giant shark sticking out of its roof.

BrokenWing · 08/11/2018 23:04

On my motorway commute, miles from anywhere over moors there is a little fir tree 5-6 meters from the road. It has a few bits of tinsel and a couple of decorations on it all year round. Has been there for years and someone must be renewing the tinsel now and again.

Every now and again I'll see a post on Facebook where someone has noticed it for the first time. No idea what the story is behind it.

Squirrel26 · 08/11/2018 23:10

On the same route as Penny Farthing man I often see a very elderly lady dressed in many woollen layers laboriously riding a (normal) bike. I swear she must spend all day cycling everso slowly up and down.

On the same road (what is it with that one road??) I see a man running dressed in normal running shorts and t-shirt, but barefoot.

Iwanttobreakfreefreefree · 08/11/2018 23:18

Man who always has his top off even when it is snowing.

Squizzard · 08/11/2018 23:39

Thats just reminded me of 'ferret man' and 'dog with cat woman' who used to walk their respective animals on leads.

Osirus · 08/11/2018 23:50

Unfortunately, too many dead donkeys, ponies and cattle (and deer, sometimes), hit by vehicles. I commute through the New Forest. It’s heartbreaking.

Osirus · 08/11/2018 23:50

I was very late for work once due to cows licking the road after it had been gritted.!

theothermum · 08/11/2018 23:52

@bagsofbats was it in Nottingham by any chance? I used to commute there and saw someone similar.

IsThisSeeSawTaken · 09/11/2018 05:22

@SealSong I know that house! There’s also a fish&chips place a short distance from it with a massive shark above the doorway. I used to walk around hunting for a third surprise shark but never found one :0)

mrpoopybutthole · 09/11/2018 07:55

Usually see a guy in a unicycle.

had to stop to let mother duck & her ducklings cross the road.

Once saw the Ghostbusters car on A road on way home. That was a great day

ChippyMinton · 09/11/2018 08:34

All sorts on my commute:
Big groups of troops running or riding horses
Prince Phillip carriage-driving
The queen driving her own car
A cafe that has a regularly changing assortment of movie props on its flat roof
Walking lady in pink trousers
Vintage Mini with Union Jack roof like the lady from Butterflies
The sex club with a full car park at any time of day...
Heston Blumenthal’s maitre d. chatting on the pavement

Best part of my day!

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 09/11/2018 09:08
