What odd things do you see on your commute?

A road near me has at least three houses where people appear to lock themselves in the front porch to smoke. The door to the house is shut behind them, but so is the porch door. Even when the weather is positively balmy they stand there looking like they are in the Mr and Mrs soundproof booth as it slowly fills up with smoke. One bloke even has a little stool he sits on in there.

It completely mystifies me. All these houses have back gardens, as far as I can work out, yet these people stand in full view of the road in their dressing gowns, smoking furiously in their self imposed little cell and probably stinking out their downstairs hallway.

What possible explanation can there be? What odd stuff do you see on your way to and from work?

I regularly pass a guy wearing brown boots, blue dungarees, red jumper underneath and a red cap...not sure if he realises he's dressed as Super Mario but it makes me smile every time! All he's missing is a moustache

itbemay · 08/11/2018 20:07

Horses from the kings troop out on morning exercise, at least 20 of them.

PixieMiss · 08/11/2018 20:15

I always find people who do their face on a commute really odd! I would much rather get up 15 minutes earlier than do my makeup in front of everyone on the bus Grin

Fairypiggy · 08/11/2018 20:20

When I started doing early morning shifts on a Sunday morning I was surprised to discover that Sunday drivers really do exist! People dressed up in their best clothes driving their car very slowly.
I also used to work late shifts and often found you would see wildlife on the way home. The best was seeing a fox and her baby fox cubs crossing the road!

Getoffthetableplease · 08/11/2018 20:23

We used to pass a lady I'd guess in her late 70s marching over the same bridge each morning. She had the blackest dyed hair, a full face of heavy makeup, always in a coloured skirt suit with high heels to match and a wheeled suitcase of the same colour - always all perfectly matching but a different colour every single day! I like to think she was/is some kind of supreme leader of some kind Grin

I see a man who dresses in a pink dressing gown, a lady's bobble hat, wellies and a flowery skirt when I'm on my way home from work. He carries several plastic bags of shopping.

I see a very venerable lady who drives a little red car, every day on my commute. She wears huge woolly gloves to drive, whatever the weather. She waves when I overtake her. I reckon her to be 85 years old or so. She bloody steps on the acceleration as well!

blamethewitchescat · 08/11/2018 20:28

We once saw a man in full clown costume a make up driving a red Micra, we both did a double take, looked at each other like this HmmConfused and then pissed ourselves laughing.

In thr late 80s, 90s,Taking the District line into Central London, you see row upon row of terraced houses backing on the Tube line. Many had a flat roofed extension on the back.

On top of a 2 floor flat roofed section, there sat a car.
How it got there, I don't know!

TheLastNigel · 08/11/2018 20:34

A very old man on a very old bike dressed entirely in beige, except for knee high stripy socks, (various colour combinations changed Daily), peddling slowly away about 4 miles from the town we are heading to. We pass him at roughly the same time every morning. The last village is about 4 miles back so he is doing some cycling! He sits up very straight so we have nick named him Sit Up Larry and we wave at him every morning. We have favourite pairs of his socks each and it's a bit like getting the good chocolate in the advent calendar when you see him wearing 'your ones'. We love him!

sittingonacornflake · 08/11/2018 20:35

I get a car ferry to work and 1man sits in his car shaving his face while we cross

bakebakebake · 08/11/2018 20:39

Nothing exciting now but when DC were at nursery, we passed a house with a human sized Predator on top of the porch! I knew someone who knew them, apparently it cost £2k!

donkeysandzebras · 08/11/2018 20:40

Every day on the way to work I pass a woman walking her child to school. This has been for a couple of years now. Sometime before Easter, I decided she was definitely pregnant, she then disappeared for a few weeks and I passed various relatives. Then she appeared with a twin pram. I did a complete double take. Not really sure why.
Last week, the babies progressed from the bassinet to the pushchair seat. One has a red cosytoes & one a blue cosytoes. Most mornings since I have spent the last minutes of my commute speculating whether they are a boy & girl or the same sex. Still inward facing so there's nothing else for me to go on other than the cosytoes. I am clearly overinvested in this family!

Fridaydreamer · 08/11/2018 20:40

A little while back there was a woman at a bus stop that I pass regularly having a full on dance battle with herself whilst grinning like the Cheshire Cat. She even did the running man as I was sat in traffic watching GrinGrin so impressive!! The best bit was the face of the older teen girl sat on the bus stop bench giggling at her GrinGrin

Jolliett · 08/11/2018 20:45

I walk along the canal where some really gorgeous houses back onto it on the other side. One of them, on its 1st floor terrace, has a life size fibreglass cow 😁

Fridaydreamer · 08/11/2018 20:46

I also pass a tiny little woman running down the street every day. This wouldn’t be that odd but she’s dressed in office wear (smart black pants, court style shoes, blouse and big anorak coat - not running gear) yet she legs it every single time I see her.

I don’t know if she’s late or just really loves running 🤷‍♀️ and having just changed my shift I’m sad I may never find out now Grin

Squirrel26 · 08/11/2018 20:57

I once saw a man with a full sized kayak on the District Line. Not from the District Line. On a District Line train.

Now I’ve moved to the country, I see a man on a Penny Farthing on the back road to the nearest town. He wears a different ‘period’ type outfit each time. I googled him once, because I was worried I might be hallucinating, and found a blog by someone who’d spoken to him. Apparently he rides a Penny Farthing because ‘that’s the bike he has’. Hmm No one owns a Penny Farthing and rides it smoking a pipe and wearing a flat cap and plus fours by accident...

themagicamulet · 08/11/2018 21:10

The white rabbit man of Barnes. Thought I was hallucinating the first time. I drive a different route now so not sure if he still does it

StarfishSandwich · 08/11/2018 21:18

I used to see the same lady, running exactly the same route at the same time every morning. I guess not that weird but as I was working shifts, I know for a fact that she ran the same route every day of the week, including bank holidays at 6.30! I found her commitment to routine very impressive!

groundcontroltomontydon · 08/11/2018 21:21

On my early morning train commute I used to pass an old van parked in a field next to a house. Peering over the van dashboard were two geese. I'm guessing the van was used as a shelter and the geese were shut in at night and the front seats were comfy. It always made me smile to see what looked like two ne'er-do-well geese trying to hot-wire a vanSmile

PearlMcClutcher · 08/11/2018 21:26

On my old commute, I used to see a guy walking whilst dry shaving his face with an orange bic razor!!!

Arrivederci · 08/11/2018 21:28

If I leave a bit later than usual I see a woman waiting for a bus the spitting image of Eileen in coronation street.

CakeNinja · 08/11/2018 21:32

Running lady in a lacy croptop and a reeeeally long plait, pushing her son in a go kart so she doesn’t have to walk at his slow (presumably normal walking speed) pace.

A man who is the spitting image of Karl Kennedy from neighbours circa 1995.

Walking man who just walks absolutely everywhere between here and the next 2 towns (often see him when I’m driving places, just walking about) with his cans of energy drinks and mysterious carrier bags.

Methodone lady who is always lying outside on the street outside the pharmacy in her dressing gown and slippers, sometimes awake asking for money/cigarettes/lighter but always in a lying down position.

Choirofangles · 08/11/2018 21:34

@StereophonicallyChallenged I think I see the same woman. I mostly see her walking, but she also has a green car. She’s really dedicated to the green thing.

GailLondon · 08/11/2018 21:39

I see identical twin ladies, I’ve been seeing them regularly for about 10 years now, and they must be in their late 40s.
They are always together, and always wearing not matching but very coordinated outfits. So one might have a black coat over a camel coloured dress then the other will have a camel coat over a black dress. Last week they both had different shades of the same floral jumpsuit, coloured sunglasses and pastel felt floppy hats!
I think they might live and work together which must be a bit suffocating!

Accountant222 · 08/11/2018 21:40

@Anythingforacatslife, was it on Moorgate in Rotherham? If so I've seen him waiting for the bus
