Can anyone recommend a good, meaty drama series that isn't about spies/espionage?

Looking for something new to binge-watch with dh. Don't fancy Killing Eve or Little Drummer Girl. We loved things like Marchlands, Lightfields, Broadhurch, The Secret of Crickley Hall.

Any recommendations?

I lurved "House of Lies" but that had loads of black comedy and swearies. Also, came from similar work background so could chortle - only wish my experience was so sexy re first class travel!

Handmaids tale

Greensleeves · 05/11/2018 22:50

Furiously googling all of these! Prefer British-made to US, generally

The bodyguard? Mr Mercedes?

SavageBeauty73 · 05/11/2018 22:52

Have you watched Unforgotten, Luther and Line of Duty?

AlecOrAlonzo · 05/11/2018 22:54

It's about two newspapers: a Guardian-style one called the Herald and a Mail/Sun style one. There's a really smart journalist on the Herald who is investigating the death of a young woman who she thinks was hit by a police car. The editor of the tabloid one wants to poach her. They're both really messed up in their personal lives. There's various political things going on. David Suchet plays the owner of the tabloid one and he's pretty dodgy I think. Don't want to give too much away. The opening titles remind me of Dr Foster.

Wow, loads of suggestions, thanks! Unforgotten looks great :)

I watched the first episode of Trust. I thought it was really, really well done but couldn't live with the awfulness of the characters. It was gamy and intense though.

mateysmum · 05/11/2018 22:59

Has to be Mad Men

7 series each of I think 13 hour long episodes.

American, but brilliant. You must watch to episode 4 at least to decide if you get it.

After all, "who is Don Draper?"

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/11/2018 23:11

I’m really enjoying Trust

affectionincoldclimate · 05/11/2018 23:13

Mad Men

And if you haven't seen it yet, The Wire. The most epic series ever made.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 05/11/2018 23:16

No Offence is absolutely outstanding

Fairylea · 05/11/2018 23:21

Even though you’ve said not killing eve I really recommend giving it a go. It’s less about the crimes / spying etc and more to do with the relationships. It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen tv series wise. The writing is amazing.

BreakWindandFire · 05/11/2018 23:22

If you like sci-fi, The Expanse is very good. And Jessica Jones and Daredevil are the best of the Marvel universe series.

AiryFairy1 · 05/11/2018 23:23

I’m quite enjoying A Discovery of Witches ... it gets a bit teen vampire-y soap opera-ish, but the main character has gorgeous hair and Matthew Goode is rather lovely too.
(I’ve previously enjoyed Handmaids Tale, Killing Eve, Bodyguard, Big Little Lies, Grimm, Downton Abbey)

True detective, top of the lake, red riding, the break, the missing, the staircase.

The good wife - it’s fantastic
