The cursed child and fantastic beasts?
Are they any good?

Have only seen Fantastic Beasts, it's good but I'm more of a book person so doesn't compare with the original series for me. I would have been far more willing to embrace the 'sequels' if JK Rowling could stop bloody retconning. There's no need to go back to the original story arc, just do something new and let go.

I have always felt there's a cracking story about the Marauders after Hogwarts in there, strictly for adults. Wouldn't you want to know what Sirius Black was like in the good old days, or what really happened when Andromeda Black ran away? The impending tragedy would only make it better.

But oh no, let's have retrospective race changes and cultural appropriation instead...

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 03/11/2018 20:48

Yes. I’m obsessed. Can’t wait for next one.

Argghhh @SmallAndFarAway This, so much!!! Seriously Harry Potter and Co have had their story, give the fans (and fanfiction writers) what they want and write the marauders story already.

Or just let Newt bloody get on with it - it does my head in when all paths have to lead back to Voldemort. There's other villains in the world, you know...

IceRebel · 03/11/2018 21:53

There's other villains in the world, you know...

Agreed, just like there are other schools, but do we ever get to see them, nope. Back to Hogwarts we go... again!!

And don't even get me started on how Newts been to America, England and is now going to France. But all the horcruxes were conveniently in the UK, i'm sure Voldemort did a bit of traveling... Albania anyone.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 03/11/2018 21:57

Personally, I absolutely loved both. Saw Cursed Child last year, and one of the nicest things for me was how glorious it was to be back in that world again.

As for There's no need to go back to the original story arc, just do something new and let go Cormeron Strike? The Parish Council? I'd say she has.

Willow1992 · 03/11/2018 22:00

I think Cursed Child is a bit of a mess to be honest. I quite like the Fantastic Beasts franchise, though it's not a scratch on HP.

Rowenaravenclawsdiadem · 03/11/2018 22:02

The thing with the Horcruxes were that they were hidden in places that meant something to Voldemort.

WhyAmISoCold · 03/11/2018 22:04

I really liked Fantastic Beasts and it feels like a whole new and separate story to me.

Have only read Cursed Child, have to say I don't like it. Feels very messy, plot is thin as hell and the characters are not believable at all. Seems like they have all had personality transplants. Watching it with them making Hermoine black would do my head in. There was no need for that apart from bloody PC.

FallenAngel89 · 03/11/2018 22:05

Not a fan of Cursed child at all. Fantastic beasts is fab though! Grin

JustBeingJobless · 03/11/2018 22:13

Massive HP fan, but wasn’t overly enthralled with Cursed Child. Loved Fantastic Beasts though and looking forward to seeing the new one. I agree about the Marauders - I’d love to see their stories expanded a bit.

AngelaSchrute · 03/11/2018 22:17

I'm a big fan of Fantastic Beasts. I thought I would despise it but it ended up totally falling in love with Newt as a character.

I'm interested (and embarrassingly excited) to see how the Dumbledore/Grindelwald past romance will be played out in the new film.

I was really unimpressed with The Cursed Child tbh.

RiverTam · 03/11/2018 22:17

I enjoyed the Fantastic Beasts film, though very disappointed that it’s got Johnny Depp in it.

Going to see Fursed Child in a couple of weeks, can’t wait!

RiverTam · 03/11/2018 22:18

Fursed?? Cursed!

TrippingTheVelvet · 03/11/2018 22:27

The Cursed Child was absolute bollocks. I really tried my best to like it but was so disappointed. Utter tripe.

I loved Fantastic Beasts and I'm really looking forward to the new one.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 03/11/2018 22:28

Shayalonnie's The Debt Of Time on Archive Of Our Own is the marauders fic for adults that you're all looking for. It's amazing.

JennyOnAPlate · 03/11/2018 22:34

I thought the cursed child was really shit (I've read it but not seen it on stage) the plot is just dreadful and I wouldn't want to waste my money on tickets!

I really enjoyed fantastic beasts though and am looking forward to the next one.

Plasticgiraffe · 03/11/2018 22:34

I didn't like the stage version of cursed child maybe as a film it might work better but I found the 5 hour play boring and couldn't relate to any of the characters.

Wasn't expecting to like fantastic beasts but as a stand-alone film I did enjoy it. Looking forward to the next film but it's a shame Jonny Depp is Grindlewald would prefer an unknown to play him. Also is Jude Law cast as Dumbledore? If the film is set in the 1920s I was wondering how this links with the books if fantastic beasts is set in America. I thought Dumbledore stayed in the UK after what happened to Ariana and kept a low profile until the final battle with Grindlewald in the 1940s. It's hard to tell from the trailers!

I'm re re re reading Order of the Phoenix at the moment and would love to learn more about the original members of the order JKR if you're reading this Smile

TheGrassIsGreener3 · 03/11/2018 22:34

Hate all the sequels. I love the main films but I just think it's gone too far now.

JeanPagett · 03/11/2018 22:36

I loved fantastic beasts but I thought cursed child was shit. That said, I only read cursed child, I've heard the staging and stuff is magical and it's a much better experience in the theatre.

AngelaSchrute · 03/11/2018 22:46

I was pretty Hmm about Jude Law as young Dumbledore at first because I honestly wouldn't have picked him in a million years but I think he may actually do a good job with it.

AngelaSchrute · 03/11/2018 22:47

Ugh, my post made no sense.

I mean I never would have thought of him. It felt really random at first.

toffee1000 · 04/11/2018 04:04

I read CC and it is utter crap, bad fanfiction and yes everyone seems to be totally different personality-wise. I know people change a bit as they grow up but they don’t generally do a 180 in their personality!

Not seen Fantastic Beasts. Looks pretty interesting though.

Alfie190 · 04/11/2018 04:13

Huge HP fan but could not watch Fantastic Beasts. Not read or seen CC.

AGHHHH · 04/11/2018 04:19

Have only seen Fantastic Beasts and loved it, but not quite as much as Harry Potter.
