Hi

So my LO has just turned 6months and I have been and still am exclusively breast feeding which has taken a lot of hard work..

So as it's time for baby to start solids this is a exciting time for me to be the first one to put food in her mouth and see her reaction for memories etc

Last weekend my husband had a family wedding which I had to attend with his family. We all stayed in a hotel and me husband and LO went for the breakfast buffet and when we got there we saw my sister in law so my husbands sister who is a mother of 4 and is 37 years old already at the table with her 4year old eating breaky so we left my LO with her on her lap whilst me and hubby join the buffet line..

When I came back with my breakfast I could see that my sister in law made a face (like she's done something sneaky) so I asked her what's up? She turned around and said to me "oh I just gave your LO some coco pops and the milk from her bowl

My heart sunk and I wanted to burst in tears as when I looked over at my LO I can see she was experiencing something new in her mouth this really effected me as

  1. At that age you are NOT allowed cows milk
  2. At her mother I waited all these months to be the first one to put food in my LO mouth and my sister in law took that special moment away from me
  3. She totally undermined me as a mother and did not ask for my permission
  4. Completely unhygienic eating coco pops from her bowl and unwashed spoon

I know this was completely wrong of her and I feel so angry and hurt by it.

I haven't told my husband about it yet as I'm trying to calm myself down first also I know he will just think it's nothing which will get me more angry

What would you do in this situation??

Thanks!

Get over it, she didn't kill the child!

Jack65 · 02/11/2018 16:48

Nothing.

PotteringAlong · 02/11/2018 16:48

1. At that age you are NOT allowed cows milk
You are if it’s part of food and not a drink. Cows milk in cereal is fine from 6 months.

I get that’s not the point but you don’t need to worry about it.

But what about the fact that I wanted to be the first one rightly so as her mother to give my baby food??

What about the fact that she did not ask for my permission - say if my LO has major allergies?

LunaAzul · 02/11/2018 16:49

I’d just let it go and do nothing. You should have said something at the time.

PotteringAlong · 02/11/2018 16:50

I also wouldn’t worry about the unwashed spoon. It’s only a short amount of time until your child is eating food they find on the floor and their own shoes. An unwashed spoon will look positively cleansed.

treaclesoda · 02/11/2018 16:51

This is a wind-up surely?

Mimi2018 · 02/11/2018 16:52

Tbh I think what's effecting me the most is the fact I felt undermined as a mother where she felt she can do what she wants without my permission and also felt she got to feed all her 4kids their first foods but she took away my memorable moment?

OP posts:
PotteringAlong · 02/11/2018 16:53

If it’s any consolation I’ve got 3 children and cannot remember any of their first foods.

brownjumper · 02/11/2018 16:53

They'll be plenty more memorable moments. Don't waste your energy on this.

Pinkyyy · 02/11/2018 16:54

You can't be serious?

cansu · 02/11/2018 16:55

Fgs as soon as you mentioned 'memorable moment' I knew you were being ridiculous. Get over it.

Funclesmuck · 02/11/2018 16:55

You will hopefully look back at this one day and see how ridiculous you are being OP. There will be thousands of firsts in her life, do you intend to be there for all of them?

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 02/11/2018 16:56

Fgs as soon as you mentioned 'memorable moment' I knew you were being ridiculous. Get over it.

This, I'm afraid you are being ludicrous!

bagpiss · 02/11/2018 16:56

It's done now and you can't change anything except how you let it make you feel. Draw a line under it move on , you will have so many 'firsts' this is just not even worth giving headspace to.

ArnoldBee · 02/11/2018 16:56

The way in which you have posted this on its merits is not a big deal and there will be many firsts in your child's life you will not be able to control. I think there are other issues in the background that need to be addressed.

Mimi2018 · 02/11/2018 16:57

Ok well I guess I should let it go then..

OP posts:
treaclesoda · 02/11/2018 16:58

I do think it's very rude of her to have fed your child if she knew that she is not yet weaned. But I also think you're being incredibly over the top, which is why I thought this was a joke thread.

Hopefully at some stage you'll be able to look back at this and laugh.

Starfish28 · 02/11/2018 16:58

The only thing I would really be pissed off about is coco pops. Those things are grim.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2018 16:59

Does your baby have major allergies?

I am not sure about a memorable moment. I don't remember either of mine's first taste of solid food or who was holding the spoon. Might have been my Mum.

Just forget about it and move along.

PippaRabbit · 02/11/2018 17:01

This happened last weekend and you're still angry about it? Jeez you need to unclench and calm down. 🙄 You sound bloody hard work.

tillytoodles1 · 02/11/2018 17:01

Like others, I haven't got a clue what my two ate for the first solid meal. I do remember them eating cat food or stuff they found on the floor,

ileclerc · 02/11/2018 17:01

I honestly cannot remember the first foods dts had and it wasn't even that long ago!

Mimi2018 · 02/11/2018 17:01

I guess my in laws are always very controlling and telling me what to do with my LO and always trying to take over and undermine me as a mum hence why this has got to me..
But I think the best thing to do is let it go and yes maybe one day I will look back and think it was not worth my upset!

OP posts:
MamaLovesMango · 02/11/2018 17:02

I get it OP to a degree

I promise you though, there are bigger things to get your knickers in a twist over on the horizon. Conserve your energy for those.
