Baked beans in Cottage pie

Do you?

I love beans in cottage pie, one of my DC hates it, so I always ended making them a smaller separate one.

Just wondered how many others do add them in.

We do this - small tin of baked beans or canelli beans - give it some fibre and use less meat.

Sallystyle · 02/11/2018 18:41

No! My mum did that for a while and it completely ruined it.

Juanbablo · 02/11/2018 19:09

Sometimes I do. My mum always did and I love it. Dh thinks it's weird but tolerates it but I haven't done it for ages because cottage pie is one of his favourites and I don't want to spoil it for him.

I like them in cottage pie but DW doesn't (and by "doesn't" I mean hates with an unending loathing).

I dont think Luncheon meat is spam is it spam is spam?

Spam (stylized SPAM) is a brand of canned cooked meat made by Hormel Foods Corporation. ... By the early 1970s the name "Spam" became a genericized trademark, used to describe any canned meat product containing pork, such as pork luncheon meat.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(food)

It's just a posher name for the same thing. Ingredients are identical. 'Chopped ham and pork' is another name, but regardless of whether it's called Spam or Luncheon Meat or something else - the ingredients are the same.

"Pork, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Natural gelatin is formed during cooking in its tins on the production line."

Baked beans are lovely in cottage pie. I don't mix them in with the meat but add them as a layer between the meat mixture and the mash. As for the gravy well that has tomato puree in it anyway, as my pretty old cookbook tells me to (along with marmite and worcestershire sauce).

you Brits and your odd love of baked beans...
i worked with a expat Brit
and her husband came in one day telling us she should be a cook in the restaurant,
that she is that good!!!!!,
He told us about the dinner she made the night before....
She took the outside batter off a packet of chicken nuggets and layered them in a casserole dish
she then opened a couple of cans of baked beans and spread them over the now batter-less chicken nuggets
and then she put on a layer of instant mashed potatoes
and then she baked it all in the oven until the instant mashed potatoes was a bit crispy
Her husband thought this was simply the best thing hes ever eaten, far better than he could get in any fine dining restaurant....
I asked my husband if i should make it for him Envy he declined!!
very different food styles between countries... i think there might be a tin of baked beans in the cupboard, its been there for years, as we were told to buy things for "just in case" after the earth quakes, and ive tried to get the family to eat it but no one will....

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/11/2018 08:47

I put them in sometimes but I rinse them first so the sauce is washed off otherwise the flavor is too sweet

Reaa · 03/11/2018 11:32

ThursdayLastWeek · 03/11/2018 12:41

Ooh yes I love baked beans in my pie!

Proseccoagain · 03/11/2018 21:49

Another yes here for baked beans in cottage pie! Also soffrito, tinned chopped tomatoes, and a teaspoon of curry powder. Yummy! Love baked beans, also use them in a chilli if I've got no kidney beans.

Reaa · 03/11/2018 21:56

I need to count up the replies and see if yes out weighs the no's now.

I make Sherpherd Pie with corned beef as I don’t like mince and serve it with baked beans.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/11/2018 22:04

We have the leftovers with beans on the side the next day (and brown sauce).

ZebraOwl · 03/11/2018 22:15

Nope. Nope nope nopeitty nope nope. Admittedly when I’m making pie of this ilk it is vegan, made with with soya mince, which some people think is worse than baked beans, but FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND HOLY WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!

Baked beans on toast, or on a jacket potato, with a sausage&chips type-meal, or with a cooked breakfast/brunch: yes, fine, grand. None of this using them as ingredients lark. Blegh. It’s just wrong. Morally wrong I tell you. This sort of thing is why Empires fall. (That said, TheSerenDipitY, would like to be clear the “recipe” you describe = not standard fare & frankly wonder if the guy was on a wind-up it sounds that rank&wrong...)

AamdC · 04/11/2018 09:12

Would that not be more ofa corned beef hash Alexander?

AnnaMagnani · 04/11/2018 10:07

OMG No. Beans are barely a foodstuff and definitely not an ingredient.

AlexanderHamilton · 04/11/2018 10:09

I always thought corned beef hash was squares of potato, onion and corned beef fried up together.

Our corned beef shepherds pie is cubes of corned bueef in a pie dish topped with mash potato and browned off under the grill.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 04/11/2018 10:11

Never had, but I will try

Muddlingalongalone · 04/11/2018 10:14

I've never had a cottage pie without beans. That's how my mum made it and how I now make it!
