Baked beans in Cottage pie

Do you?

I love beans in cottage pie, one of my DC hates it, so I always ended making them a smaller separate one.

Just wondered how many others do add them in.

Lentils (to bulk mince out), peas, carrots, turnip yes, beans no (but don't tell Dhabi this is an option).

Love beans in chilli but think they would be wrong in cottage pie.

My ex made shepherd's pie this way. Layer of baked beans on the bottom of the dish, then the mince, then the mash. I was v skeptical but he insisted. It was enjoyable in a homely supper grub kind of way, but I've never repeated the recipe... I like to taste the meat, herbs and and vegetables in my dish, not sweetened baked bean juice.

whatsthestory123 · 31/10/2018 13:50

many would hate me i put beans and soffritto and lentils

also put beans in chilli

Reaa · 31/10/2018 13:54

I mix the mince with beans, finely chopped onion, loads of mash on the top.
DH adds cheese on top, if I take my eye off it before putting it in the oven

No. Nope. Never.

We once had dinner with friends and they served cottage pie with baked beans in. I had never ever seen it before. I left the beans. I just couldn’t bring myself to eat them along with the mince/gravy, it turned my stomach.

Gingerninj · 31/10/2018 14:11

I've always had beans in cottage pie, it's how my mum always made it so all my life i thought it was normal but apparently I've been lied to

SushiMonster · 31/10/2018 14:13

I'm a strong yes to in the cottage pie

RTFT · 31/10/2018 14:13

Ew, no - beans and gravy? Vom! Don't put them in chilli either but I do put chick peas in chilli which is weird according to mother

bellinisurge · 31/10/2018 14:18

My preferred recipe from my 70s childhood learned at my 70s school includes baked beans. And also crisps on top of the mash mixed with cheese for a cheesy crunchy 70s topping,

A580Hojas · 31/10/2018 14:20

Yes I do if we have any left over in the fridge. So that would be half a can in a cottage pie for 4, I wouldn't want it any more beany than that.

I wouldn't open a new tin of beans for it, just make cottage pie without.

To the unbelievers - honestly, you must try it! It's not gross at all.

BaldricksCoffee · 31/10/2018 14:22

In chilli yes (with the tomato gunk rinsed off first) but not in a cottage pie, sorry.

Reaa · 31/10/2018 14:44

You don't actually need to add gravy as the bean juice adds the liquid. I always serve with gravy instead Grin

No no no no. Cottage pie isn't even remotely what a cowboy pie is no matter how many beans or cheese you add to it! This is Cowboy Pie

As for baked beans in cottage pie, no. Baked beans are tomatoey, aren't they? That sounds wrong. I'm not averse to trying a bean in a cottage pie but not a baked bean.

whatsthestory123 · 31/10/2018 14:51

we are twins op.gravy seperate and optinoal but do ad a stock cube to pie

Reaa · 02/11/2018 17:11

My kids favourite when they were little was always Lumberjack Pie - and still is, as young adults. The excitement that accompanies me cooking one soon the rare occasions that I till do (and then only by request) is still great, even though the ingredients are pretty crap (Luncheon Meat basically), and was only cooked when I was skint - which was often as a single mum.

You brown slices of Luncheon Meat (from the curved corner rectangular cans) in a little oil and place in the bottom of an oven proof dish. I sprinkle over a couple of veggie oxo cubes for a bit of extra flavour. Grin You can also add fried onions if you want - but my kids prefer it without.

Then a layer of baked beans, followed by a layer of buttery mash with lots of cheddar grated on the top - then bake.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 02/11/2018 18:10

By luncheon meat do you mean corned beef?

I put beans in a lasagne once when I didn't have enough mince. It was bloody delicious!

Jitters22 · 02/11/2018 18:12

No I mean luncheon meat aka Spam.

No Envy

I've been given it at a friend's house years ago, they cheerfully scoffed it whilst I tried to eat enough of it to be polite and suppress my urge to retch. The texture Shock. Why would you do that?

AamdC · 02/11/2018 18:18

I dont think Luncheon meat is spam is it spam is spam? , but no beans in cottage pie

fourquenelles · 02/11/2018 18:24

Yes of course but in both cottage and shepherds' pies. The beans have to be in a layer just under the potato though no mixing in the meaty goodness. Whether the potato is mixed with an oxo cube is probably another thread.
