I fucking hate carving pumpkins

Who ever decided this was fun?
It's messy, sticky, fiddly, sweaty and really really fucking hard

And now it's something else that's become a competition, so a traditional scary face isn't good enough, oh no we need Spiderman and Darth Vader and Mona Lisa and the fucking Taj Mahal

Plus!
The kids can't even do it and inevitably get bored of watching me hack at a pumpkin muttering about "fucking Halloween" so they tootle off playing and I'm sat alone in the kitchen surrounded by innards trying to create a piece of art on a fucking vegetable wondering what the hell happened to my life

I fucking hate carving fucking bastard pumpkins Halloween Angry

DD wants to do a pineapple! Not sure how that will work out, I'm leaving it to DH to do with her after school!

HawkeyeInConfusion · 31/10/2018 13:40

We did our first ever pumpkins yesterday. Fortunately Asda only had tiny ones left so there wasn't too much gloop to dig out.

It was much easier than the turnips I used to do as a kid.

shearwater · 31/10/2018 13:58

I just did the most basic design last night. I was in an anxious fug the whole time about either myself or my daughter cutting ourselves badly on the really sharp knife. At least toasted pumpkin seeds are delicious.

I bought a tiny 350g green pumpkin, job done in less than 10 mins.

Donna1001 · 31/10/2018 16:44

I hate doing them too, but it’s more because of the insides. It makes me feel really sick!

BearSoFair · 31/10/2018 17:13

We haven't done any this year, I thought if DC don't ask then I won't mention it...silence, result! Not even been mentioned this evening, maybe they all secretly hate it too Grin

yasmin0147 · 31/10/2018 17:44

I drew a face with a marker pen, and I’ll be cooking the pumpkin tomorrow. I hate the spooky element of Halloween can’t wait for it to be over. At least Christmas you can put the telly on and not be scared
S*-less before bed.

mbosnz · 31/10/2018 17:49

That was a fucking glorious rant!!!!!! Epic!!!!

Bestseller · 31/10/2018 17:51

I dont think it's compulsory. I've never carved one, seems like an obscene waste of food to me, unless you're going to eat it, which no one in this house is, so I've always said no.

EnidButton · 31/10/2018 17:57

DH usually does it but we left it until last minute to decide whether to bother or not so I've had to do it as he's at work.

Jeeeezus what a faff! There was stringy crap up the wall ffs. How did it get up there?! It looks good once done but not sure the blister on my thumb and the clearing up was worth it.

New found admiration for my DF who used to carve me and my friend a turnip every year.

EnidButton · 31/10/2018 17:58

Also I now realise why DH side eyes the most enormous pumpkin I always pick out. Sorry DH Blush

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 31/10/2018 17:59

Kids do their own from aged about 6.

BeBesideTheSea · 31/10/2018 18:00

I like the idea of drawing on a satsuma. It can go on our porch windowsill with Edgar (Argos crow)

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 31/10/2018 18:02

the same thought earlier while I was carving a cat into a bastard pumpkin

Worried about this though - poor cat! Why would you think it is ok to try to carve your cat into a pumpkin!?😭

dementedpixie · 31/10/2018 18:05

Well i didn't buy one. Asda didn't even have any left when I was there earlier. I can't be bothered and the kids aren't fussed either. Have had a few folk at the door but far fewer houses have decorations up this year compared to others. I only bought cheap aldi crisps and biscuits this year whereas in other years have made up wee bags of sweets. One year I gave out about 70 of them! Too expensive to do that every year

EnidButton · 31/10/2018 18:10

It is expensive. I used to do it every year then stopped. This year I've left the bowl on the doorstep. Haven't checked it yet but I bet it's looking low already.

whatsthestory123 · 31/10/2018 18:19

this is the first year i havent bought a pumpkin horahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

ive done the whole trudging/begging at strangers doors, dressing up etc etc

ive done it for 15yrs and it just gets worse every year

im glad ive done my time

Sallystyle · 31/10/2018 18:36

I didn't bother getting one this year.

I still had to help gut a few of the bastards at work though.

OvO · 31/10/2018 18:37

I hate the scooping out part.

But my youngest still likes doing it so I keep doing it. ‘Twas nice sitting together carving them. The Teen has gone out so for the first time we haven’t done one together!

We never did this sort of thing growing up so I like to relive my youth a bit. Halloween Grin

RavenLG · 31/10/2018 18:40

Did my first one this year. The carving was OK but the smell. Holy fuck. And getting the innards out was a nightmare. My hands are itchy and dry now not sure if related but I'm blaming it

Ignoramusgiganticus · 31/10/2018 18:53

Aghh I miss it now. The kids aren't really kids anymore so we've gone for a ceramic classy one with tea lights lit in it. Still put the decorations up but it's not the same anymore Sad The kids are doing their stuff in their rooms and I'm the excited one answering the door. That's fun because we were always out partying and trick and treating ourselves so normally left DH in charge of door answering. But it's not the same. Enjoy it whilst you can.

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 31/10/2018 20:31

Or was it like this?

I fucking hate carving pumpkins
DrCoconut · 31/10/2018 21:17

I get sore hands but it's worth it for pumpkin seeds, a huge pan of pumpkin soup (I can get a couple of pounds of flesh out of a big pumpkin) and entertainment for the dc.

SixToEightInchesOfSnow · 31/10/2018 21:26

Ds (9) mithered for ages to get one and when I opened it up, he took one look inside and said, ‘if I’d have known it was going to be like that I wouldn’t have bothered’ 🙈.

whatsthestory123 · 31/10/2018 21:32

Scoop out with spoon much easier
