How cold is your house without the heating?

And how can you make it warmer?

OP posts:
Kerberos · 27/10/2018 21:06

Eh?

ScouseQueen · 27/10/2018 21:08

Too cold. But if you have no heating, you need many layers including thermal underwear. Blankets too. Primark will do the sort of thing.

VenusClapTrap · 27/10/2018 21:08

I can tell you that precisely, because ours was off all week while the boiler was being replaced. It got down to 14 degrees. We have an open fire so we can warm up the lounge, if not the rest of the house.

flamingofridays · 27/10/2018 21:09

Bloody freezing.

Layers
Blankets
Draft excluders
Thick curtains

Believeitornot · 27/10/2018 21:10

Put the heating on.... when our electricity went - which meant no boiler so no heating in November - it went down to single figures. We used fan heaters and hot water bottles at night (we had two young dcs).

BloodyBosch · 27/10/2018 21:10

Lots of ways to make it warmer.
Thermal liners for curtains
Close curtains before the sun sets
Rugs on cold floors
Draft excluders
Door curtains on external doors
Wear layers
Use blankets
Halogen Heater in the room you are sitting in - cost effective and provide light as well as warmth

MrsGarethSouthgate · 27/10/2018 21:10

Mine was 13.5 around half five this evening.

A580Hojas · 27/10/2018 21:10

I live mid terrace in a city in the south of England so probably not that cold.

What are you really asking op?

LizzieBennettDarcy · 27/10/2018 21:11

We've recently changed our double glazing, which has made a massive difference to the heat kept in the house. And we laid better insulation in the loft.

Our thermostat was on 16c before the heating went on this afternoon about 3pm. That's without heat since about 9pm yesterday.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/10/2018 21:13

Mine was 18 until I put the heating on - now at 21. It's lovely and warm now.

hugoagogo · 27/10/2018 21:13

It was between 13 and 16°C first thing this morning before the heating went on.

DarkDarkNight · 27/10/2018 21:14

Freezing. Rented house and I think the bathroom window is single glazed, the doors and windows are badly sealed so it’s really draughty.

Herja · 27/10/2018 21:14

Mine's not been on since April. I can tell you precisely how cold it is inside, it says so on the thermostat:14.6 c. So not very. I've got a jumper and a dressing gown on and I feel fairly warm apart from my feet - I'm trying to convince the cat on to those...

When the kids are here I put an oil heater on in their bedrooms for a bit in the evening, but we generally just wear more layers. I never had heating growing up and it was always fine. Few jumpers and a blanket and you're fine.

Boatsnack3 · 27/10/2018 21:15

My thermostat read 12 in the early hours of the morning. I hate the heating on at night, heatings been on around 19/20 all day. It'll go off about half 9.

In the depths of winter we wear layers plus get all the draught excluders out as well as have the heating on. Fluffy socks, proper slippers and fleece blankets for the couch always help me feel warmer too.

Yonijust · 27/10/2018 21:15

17.5. Now 21.
Fleeces on sofa & hot water bottles & electric blanket in bed.

MongerTruffle · 27/10/2018 21:15

Around 18 degrees.
When we went abroad for Christmas last year for two weeks, it got down to 12 degrees. I live in a new build (so it has a lot of insulation).

liquidrevolution · 27/10/2018 21:16

DDs room is 15 degrees at the moment. Rest of the house must be colder.

We have blankets and plastic soled slippers for the tiled floor. Heating will go on when it gets much colder.

LaChatte · 27/10/2018 21:18

There's a great thread in classics about staying warm when money's tight.

Thisismyhappyface · 27/10/2018 21:19

Well insulated new build with heat recovery system/triple glazing. Very rarely gets below 18.5. if log burner is on, house is about 21. Central heating only gets turned on for an hour in the morning if frosty outside- at the weekend, log burner is lit instead

BishopBrennansArse · 27/10/2018 21:21

About 26.5 degrees c without heating

springmachine · 27/10/2018 21:21

13 degrees my house thermometer is on today (remotely transmitting to me)

The heating has been off this weekend as we are staying away

captainprincess · 27/10/2018 21:21

13.5 degrees at 8.45 this morning. Taken most of the day to get it up to 18 degrees.

redsummershoes · 27/10/2018 21:22

ok if we stay huddled in one room with duvets and hot water bottles.
got down to 6 degrees after 24 when out boiler when out due to the beast from the east.

Longdistance · 27/10/2018 21:22

We’ve only in the last week put our heating on. We have UPVC windows, we had extra insulation put in when we built our extension.
Mainly been wearing jumpers and using hot water bottles for heat until then.
We’ll have the heating on until about March now, and after that it will be off, erm, snow pending ❄️

springmachine · 27/10/2018 21:22

As so...
