How cold is your house without the heating?

And how can you make it warmer?

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 27/10/2018 22:10

Our olive oil is often cloudy in the winter

YetAnotherUser · 27/10/2018 22:12

My house is at 18.5 at the moment, not switched the heating on yet.

Outside temperature 5 degrees.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 27/10/2018 22:16

I have a newish build house with good cavity wall insulation. I control my heating by thermostat-it clicked in this morning at 11 degrees 😱. Having said that it warms up very quickly and I never need to put my stat above 15. I think my stat is in the coldest part of the house, so realistically when it thinks it’s 11 degrees it’s probably nearer to 13/14.

TowerRingInferno · 27/10/2018 22:18

15.5 in rooms without heating on. 22 in sitting rooms with wood burners going and 20 in the kitchen (aga 24/7). We just heat the rooms we use. Old house, no insulation.

Pascha · 27/10/2018 22:20

The boys rooms are at 18° and 19° respectively so not really cold at all. I'd put the heating on if they dropped below 17.

purpleme12 · 27/10/2018 22:22

Are people's houses really 15 or 18 without the heating on now? Surely that's because people must have had the heating on hours ago or something and it's still warm from that?

WaxOnFeckOff · 27/10/2018 22:29

I live in Scotland so I'm always amazed when people don't have their heating on all year round. Only time mine has been off was when we had the heatwave at the end of June....

Then you come on here and people are waiting until November to even think about putting it on and then they switch it off again in March.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 27/10/2018 22:30

Purple if my house was 15-18 without the heating on I’d never need to put it on Grin. We like our house to be just on the cooler side of warm. Everyone starts to moan if it gets too hot and 18 would be deemed as too hot!

BretonStripe · 27/10/2018 22:33

We like ours around 20 degrees, if not a tad warmer (S.W England)

Been away for a few days and got back today to the thermostat showing it was 14 degrees ! Took all afternoon to get back up to 20. Hence having it on 7am-9am and 4pm - 7pm (override if we're in all day) Autumn - Spring.

Darkestnight · 27/10/2018 22:33

It's freezing when the heating is off and in the summer it's always cold when it's hot outside.

Never mind I'm moving into a brand new New build house in a month I hope so won't have to worry anymore.

Not had my heating on since the "beast from the east" buggered off in march!

I'm in the south though, and I have a South facing conservatory so if the sun is out I leave the door open and get a bit of free heat from that.

My house is late 30's mid terrace, an old dear lived here before me and had loads of insulation put in so it's quite easy to keep warm.

I'm hoping to last a bit longer until the big switch on, but it won't be much longer. I broke out the duvet for the sofa this evening to keep warm while watching TV 😂😂

purpleme12 · 27/10/2018 22:36

Josh me too I wish my house was that warm! Today is the first time I've put heating on. It's been 14 inside before now and I've not put it on

PriscillaLydiaSellon · 27/10/2018 22:38

Not cold enough, though the flipping DC disagree.

I can't bear being hot. We argdue endlessly about the central heating. I get tetchy if it's more than about 10 degrees, though I grew up in a huge and draughty house where you just put another dog on your bed if you were cold.

My titchy kitchen is roasting as there is an Aga. I suggest my DC sit on it, if they are cold.

Otherwise. If everyone in your household is in agreement, I suggest closing the windows (several panes in my tiny 300 yr old house are broken, thank goodness, as it's natural ventilation - though the pesky DC block their broken panes up with bubble-wrap). Closing all the curtains apparently helps. Open fires also work, if you have one. My DC all have two goose-feather duvets (warmer than anything else, apparently), and blankets. I caved in and bought the youngest a fan heater, as she said that if I really loved her, I would not let her be so cold (has she never heard of cardigans?). The DC are in favour of turning up the thermostat, which causes some discussion, but it's a sure-fire way to a hot house.

My solution is to turn off the radiator in my bedroom and open the window (and keep my door shut), while turning the thermostat up everywhere else. That way, at least one room in the house is tolerable (to me), while everyone else roasts. Though I appreciate that you are asking a rather different question!

FreezerBird · 27/10/2018 22:58

Thermostat says 16.5; haven't had the heating on yet this season.

Newish house, very well insulated. The biggest thing that makes a difference is having people in the house. If the kids are at school and dh at work, and I'm working from home I can feel quite chilly, but with a houseful we seem to create enough heat to make a difference.

Heating usually goes mid-novembee till about march, over breakfast time and a bit in the evening. The Beast from the East this year is the only time I've ever had heating on all day, it felt quite odd.

FurryAndObnoxious · 27/10/2018 23:03

Terraced and double glazed but still cold😭😨

purpleme12 · 27/10/2018 23:16

I've no idea how old my house is how do you even find that out?
But I'm guessing it's not very well insulated anyway.. but I'm just glad it's not like our old one with the cold. That was awful. Even worse. And a lot bigger too

RoseMartha · 27/10/2018 23:20

Currently 15 degrees. Had the heat on for an hour this morning today only. I woke up frozen though this morning at 6am. Have put extra blankets on my 'bed' and the kids beds.

PriscillaLydiaSellon · 27/10/2018 23:23

@purpleme12, mine has a blue plaque which makes it a bit obvious. Otherwise, I think the approx age of the house would be in the conveyancing info.

Dowser · 27/10/2018 23:23

I put mine on in summer..if I’m cold
I’m cold

If it drops below 22 it goes on

CountFosco · 27/10/2018 23:24

Our last house was an old non-insulated detached house with single glazing. We had the heating on constantly because in the winter it would cool to below 10C ina matter of hours. We are now in a larger semi with cavity walls, double glazing and insulation and a better boiler. It feels so toasty!

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2018 23:26

Bloody freezing!!

Large rooms, high ceilings and single glazing are not a great combination!

We spent a fortune on thermal lined curtain which are great.

Sexnotgender · 27/10/2018 23:27

Age of my house is carved into the outside too!

CarryOnScreamingValenta · 27/10/2018 23:28

Buy a heated throw. They're great for chilly mornings when you don't want to put the heating on because it will be too warm later.

PippaRabbit · 27/10/2018 23:29

Our heating is never off tbh. We're in Scotland though and have the heating set to 18 degrees in summer. We have open fires in every room and the gas heating is turned down to 12 in the winter as the fires keep the house warm. I often see people on here posting saying they put jumpers etc on before turning the heating on - just turn it on FFS and don't sit freezing your arse off.

purpleme12 · 27/10/2018 23:30

Priscilla I rent mine. Just curious to know when it was built really
