How cold is your house without the heating?

And how can you make it warmer?

I have a separate thermostat for each floor, which is really good cos I don’t have to heat the whole house. But there’s no timers. And not sure how accurate the thermostat is. There a click at about 17 degrees, so it’s either in or off? I don’t get it

@Purpleme12 Hmm. Not sure how you would find out the exact age, in that case. But if you want to post some pics of (e.g.) doors and skirting boards, that might give us a clue. Not that it helps if you are cold, as cold is subjective!

@Dowser, did you seriously say 22 degrees?? Are you my XH??! I would wither and die in that heat...

dingdongdigeridoo · 28/10/2018 00:02

Freeeeezing downstairs even when the heating is on. Boiling hot upstairs as soon as heating is on. I think the insulation is a bit shit. The house was only built in the 90s. My landlord hasn’t responded to my suggestions to get it replaced.

brizzledrizzle · 28/10/2018 06:51

warm. I often see people on here posting saying they put jumpers etc on before turning the heating on - just turn it on FFS and don't sit freezing your arse off.

Heating is a luxury for many so that's not an option. If you've a choice between food or heating then you are going to be putting jumpers on.

maxthemartian · 28/10/2018 07:44

@WaxOnFeckOff and @Dowser you are my people.
I have my heating at 22 plus depending on how cold I'm feeling. If I'm cold it goes on, never mind the time of year.

DameSquashalot · 28/10/2018 07:46

At the moment it's around 19

BretonStripe · 28/10/2018 07:59

@purpleme12 you could always ask a neighbour if they knew? Or the landlord?

Believeitornot · 28/10/2018 08:01

The click noise at 17 tells you what temp the thermostat thinks it is. So you turn it above that for the heating to kick in. But it’ll only come on if, on your boiler, the little black notches are towards the clock (the notches are the timer).

DinosApple · 28/10/2018 08:04

Downstairs is a than upstairs. With no heating in the cold snap earlier in the year it was single figures and we could see our breath.

But my parents (and DH) always tell me ice on the inside of the window was pretty standard for them growing up. Brr!

YetAnotherUser · 28/10/2018 08:08

I genuinely can't understand why someone would sit around in cold weather in a T-shirt and burn energy/money to stay warm, rather than dress appropriately for the season.

I'm not dirt poor but it's just common sense, surely?

purpleme12 · 28/10/2018 08:11

I actually think heating gives me a headache. I could it coming on last night when I had it on. I get them at mum's as well she has a really warm house. Ours isn't even really warm. Is it the artificial heat that does it? It's not carbon monoxide if that's what people are thinking. It's a new boiler and we've got an alarm. I do get headaches/migraines and I do think being too hot in bed can cause them too. But can you do about this? I can't avoid heating

brizzledrizzle · 28/10/2018 08:16

Ice inside the windows was standard in my house about 20 years ago - that and frost patterns on the less cold days.

BellMcEnd · 28/10/2018 08:18

Our house is freezing as it’s on a hill, old and (probably badly) extended. We’ve replaced most of the doors and windows which has made a big difference, we now need to change some of the curtains for thicker thermal ones.

I am slow to put the heating on though. We’re lucky that we’re all fit and healthy so I don’t always see it as a necessity. I’m very much of the “put another layer on” school of thought. We have lots of blankets for when we watch tv so that definitely helps. Our first house was literally in the middle of a field with NO central heating and rotten windows. We moved in in December from warm London flats Grin. If you took a glass of water to bed with you it froze solid. I think that this experience may have resulted in my high threshold for putting the heating on! A friend of mine literally has hers turned up to about 28 and walks around in teeshirts. Her choice and her bills but I’m always a bit Shock

overagain · 28/10/2018 08:24

Last night, when I went to bed some rooms were 10 degrees. This morning at 8am they were 11. Now I've got the heating on the kitchen is 20 and the room we're in is 22. Two unheated rooms are 11 and 12. It's 4 degrees outside, maybe colder. Our house is well insulated but old and big.

No idea how to make it warmer without heating or our fire.

Frosty66611 · 28/10/2018 08:24

My house is really cold without the heating on as all the windows are single glazed and draughty. Bought a house that I’m moving into soon and it’s got double glazing, a brand new boiler and radiators and loads of wall insulation so I’m hoping it’s going to be way more cosy. My heating bills in this house are awful during the winter. I often have to sit in my dressing gown with a hot water bottle and the heating on full blast and it’s still not particularly warm as the heat just seems to escape. My landlord is beyond useless and the EPC rating is grade E. Can’t wait to not be renting anymore

LightastheBreeze · 28/10/2018 08:26

I generally have mine at 20 in the evening and 19 in the day and wear a big cardi in winter, any hotter and it feels a bit stifling. When we have been away when it's about this temperature the house is about 12-14 when we get home. We went on holiday last February and left the thermostat set at 12 so nothing froze. 1930s smallish detached house.

SoyDora · 28/10/2018 08:29

WTF? Firstly, we have no money worries but why would you sit around in a t-shirt with the heating on when you could just put a jumper on?
Secondly, you do realise some people can’t afford to ‘just turn it on’? Or does life only exist inside your well heated bubble?

SoyDora · 28/10/2018 08:30

To answer the OP, we haven’t had to put the heating on yet this year (although looking at the temperatures for tonight it may go on today/tomorrow!) and I think the coldest it’s got is about 15 degrees.

beanaseireann · 28/10/2018 08:33

Flipping freezing.
Waiting for boiler to be fixed.

Childrenofthesun · 28/10/2018 08:34

Ours gets quite cold without any heating, around 10-11 in the coldest weather in the downstairs room that only has single- glazed patio doors. The thermostat kicks in if it drops below 15 degrees now though.

DH will only have the heating set to a maximum of 18 though because he gets "too hot". The winter months are spent arguing over the temperature with each of us surreptitiously putting the thermostat up or down. He would quite happily not put it on at all.

DonnaDarko · 28/10/2018 08:39

Not sure, but none of us are wrapped up right now. Probably about 18-20 degrees. Heating goes on automatically overnight if temp drops below 20, but I turned it off this morning at about 6.

But we have new double glazed windows and new front and back doors. A year ago, would have been whatever the temperature is outside!

Sidge · 28/10/2018 08:50

I’m in a new build semi. It hovers around 18-19 degrees in the daytime and the heating is set to come on if it drops below 17. I like it around 20 degrees as I hate being cold. I don’t like the heating on at night, but have it to come on overnight if it drops below 15.

I dress accordingly with jumpers and slippers etc but really don’t understand people who can happily sit in 14 degrees under a pile of blankets. I’d be utterly miserable. I would hate to have to get out of the shower, or out of bed when it’s that cold.

Generally I find cold houses miserable.

BirthdayKake · 28/10/2018 08:52

It's 12 degrees atm and I can see my breath but I'm not putting the heating on yet. Once it's on, you can't go without it!

BevBrook · 28/10/2018 08:55

Our heating isn’t on right now. I imagine it’s about 16 degrees. It was yesterday. Victorian house, south of England.

Nenic · 28/10/2018 08:55
  1. It’s a new build and very well insulated but that cold to me and I put the heating on. I hate being cold
