I have changed my Christmas tree theme this year and bought all new decorations and am desperate to put it up!!!!! What is the earliest I can get away with doing it?!?!

OP posts:

December at the earliest. Not before Halloween or bonfire night.
The earlier you put the tree up, the more you have to dust it.
Mine goes up after 14th December and is down on New Year’s Day.

CheddarIsNotTheOnlyCheese · 24/10/2018 22:27

For us we do it the Saturday after dh's Dec 1st birthday. He's got a thing about not having Xmas decs in his birthday picsGrin. Even when he was a kid so mil tells me.

sue51 · 24/10/2018 22:34

Wreath on the door and poinsettias in the reception rooms first week of December, real tree 20th December. It all comes down on 12th night.

We put ours up the first weekend in December (at DH’s insistence) and down again on New Years Day.

Fucksgiven · 24/10/2018 22:44

Christmas eve is traditional. Rake it dowm 12th night

Ellieboolou27 · 24/10/2018 22:47

Never before the 1st December and always after 12th night, I find it all so depressing seeing trees and decorations taken down Boxing Day. We went for Boxing Day dinner at friends last year and they’d taken all the decorations down, they have kids as do we and it all felt a bit flat.

elQuintoConyo · 24/10/2018 22:53

Up mid-December after a birthday, it stays up until 12th Night.

We also celebrate the 3 Kings of Orientar Grin and DS gets one last gift on the night of 5th with a big family feast 6th January. School's back on 8th Jan next year.

I love putting up the decorations and i love our tree and the memories around it. It goes up for long enough and i'm usually happy to put it away for another year.

I love Fake Faye, our 12yo plastic tree Grin

Miljah · 24/10/2018 22:56

After my birthday, Dec 10th, thanks. That's the rule. Ok with that? 😂

Miljah · 24/10/2018 23:03

It a bit sad that we don't have a shared Tradition anymore, isn't it?

Mine goes up on the closest w/e to when the DC break up in mid/late December. But they're late teen, so maybe not much more! But once I had DC myself, for my family, parents, DB -Xmas was 'revived' in my family! So we do school holidays, start to end, 2-ish weeks.

Keeps it special and self-contained.

KhaleesiTheDeadWalker · 24/10/2018 23:15

My friend puts up a Halloween tree (like the one pictured) then as soon as she takes the decorations off she puts the Christmas ones on!

Stop showing off.

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/10/2018 23:44

Somewhere between 15/20 December depending on the weekend. It comes down on 12th night.

AdalindShade · 24/10/2018 23:47

1 - 2 weeks before Christmas, on the Saturday. Comes down on the 6th Jan. I'd love to have it up earlier, but I wouldn't trust a really tree to survive that long. And I just can't cope without my Christmas tree smell!

I feel the need for a new theme. Haven't had new decorations in ages!

Parker231 · 24/10/2018 23:48

Same every year _ up a week before Christmas and down the day before New Years Eve.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 24/10/2018 23:58

I work in schools and I've really noticed that there's a link - my most deprived (generally unhappiest) and poorest families tend to put their trees up the earliest - almost immediately after half term.
Not sure if this is right, but tend to assume that they want the whole 'magic of christmas' thing to last as long as possible.

The thing I find the oddest, though, is that these are usually the most house-proud cleaning freaks of all the parents; and I can't think that it doesn't do their heads in not to dust something for 6 - 8 weeks. Or maybe they're just glad of that time off?

There's a big difference though between real and fake tree people. Real tree people can't have a tree around too long, or it just sheds everything all over everywhere. Fake tree people can have it up for as long as they like and it still looks the same.

Always the weekend before Christmas 15th December this year, down New Year’s Day.

BaldricksCoffee · 25/10/2018 00:09

The first Saturday in December. In the afternoon. Used to be a complete tradition in our family, and we'd do the tree while watching Basil Brush on the telly.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 25/10/2018 00:25

We always used to do it the first weekend in December, but my youngest son was born on the 13th, so now we do it on his birthday, regardless of what day it is. Some people round here have full house decorations up from mid November though!

EthelHornsby · 25/10/2018 00:33

Christmas, perhaps? 2 months away

theboxofdelights · 25/10/2018 05:15

It a bit sad that we don't have a shared Tradition anymore, isn't it?

Not really, the posts on this thread are all about family traditions. Life has changed, families can be separated by long distances and spend much of December visiting people - my own reason for our family tradition of the tree up the first week in December.

Born a long time ago out of not being at home much in December and actually wanting to see our tree.

Peridot1 · 25/10/2018 05:31

I don’t like it up too early so first week of December usually. I go a bit overboard so it takes days! I’m away for three weeks in Australia and get back on the 5th so we will probably do it after the 6th. Although DH will probably put the outside lights up before I get back. He said he might do the kitchen and dining area too. He wouldn’t be brave enough to do the tree!

I do love the pic you posted. Looks stunning. If I buy any more decorations I’ll end up divorced though! Although every cloud and all that........Grin

Flowers hedgehog80 - I’m not normally a fan of trees going up in November but completely understand why you do and I think that is a lovely tradition although I’m sure it is bittersweet.

CountFosco · 25/10/2018 06:01

Saturday before Christmas because the kids insist. But I like it up until early Jan, it's the period after Christmas that's my favourite bit.

SunnyintheSun · 25/10/2018 06:28

We’re late putters-uppers but according to this website putting them up early is good for your well being www.google.co.nz/amp/s/www.kidspot.com.au/lifestyle/fitness-and-wellbeing/me-time/why-you-should-put-up-your-christmas-decorations-early/news-story/fcc7fae11d9097561f52e3a54da3e7d3/amp

needsanewname · 25/10/2018 06:35

Mine goes up either last weekend of November or first weekend of December. This year we're on holiday until the 23rd November so likely I'll wait another week.

It comes down the day after Boxing Day though.

FieryGhoulie · 25/10/2018 06:48

From 1 December, no holds barred. Go for being as Christmassy as you can handle. 😊
