My niece is 11 and 5 foot 11! it's incredible.

NorthEndGal · 25/10/2018 11:25

She does have the gams! She rock a high heel too, haha

We have told her, never slouch, don't feel ashamed of being tall, and never try to hide it. Enjoy it for what it is.

CheeseTheDay · 25/10/2018 13:25

@ThirdChildFourthPile - I do hope you would never tell an exceptionally tall child, to their face, that you think it's abnormal. The definition of abnormal, is something that deviates from the norm, in a way that is concerning OR undesirable.

I was a tall child, ended up at 6ft 3, which was the height I reached at 18. At the age of 10, I was the same height as the average 14-year old boy, and they weren't exactly enjoyable words to hear as an 10-year old girl.

At 11, other girls in my school called me abnormal, and it was heartbreaking. I knew they weren't using it in the way of being concerned/worried, but were telling me it was 'undesirable'. Basically they were calling me a freak. In fact they did proceed to label me a freak, a few weeks later, and that's what stuck.

This begun a love-hate relationship with my height, and a long period of depression, which included suicidal thoughts.

It took me a long time to come to terms with my height, and to embrace it, all thanks to those words. Words matter, so be carefully what you say.

DelurkingAJ · 25/10/2018 13:31

I had size 8 feet and was 5’9” at 11. I still have size 8s and am 5’10”. I didn’t hit puberty until 12 so maybe I was just a freak Wink I remember towering over most of my year group. My DM bought all my school clothes for me to grow into...I never did so there might be a saving there!

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2018 13:33

My DD2 has been over six feet since she was 13.

MaMisled · 25/10/2018 13:34

My DD was 5'7 at age 10 and stopped growing at 5'9 age 15. DSDS was tiny in comparison until age 12 then suddenly shot up to 6ft!

Desmondo2016 · 25/10/2018 13:36

Get her into netball! Seriously.

MumGoneCrazy · 25/10/2018 13:39

My 3 DD's are tiny, I'm 5ft DD1 is 13 and is now sneaking up to me after a growth spurt this summer. DD3 is 9 and same height as her 6yr old friends and wears 6-7 clothing. I wish they were taller.

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2018 13:40

Desmondo2016 I cannot tell you how many times they're said and how boring the "do you play basketball?" type comments are for tall people Confused

CheeseTheDay · 25/10/2018 13:48

@BitOutofPractice - amen to that!! Add to that, "what's the weather like up there?" as well. Urgh!

My 13-year old DD1 is a little over 6ft too, and I'm not going to lie, at first I was upset when it became obvious she was going to be tall, as I just assumed she'd go through what I experienced. However, then I realised I was a hypocrite, as I had no worries about DS1 (who will be 16 on Halloween) and is now close to 6ft 5.

Thankfully though, she's had no issues like I have had, and I hope this is the case for my other two daughters (who are currently well above average for their ages, 10 and 7), should they also end up sustaining this tallness thing. My other two sons (10 and 5) are also on the 99th percentile. I guess this is what can happen when a couple who are 6ft 8 and 6ft 3 have children!

BitOutOfPractice · 25/10/2018 13:52

@CheeseTheDay (love the name!) my DD hates being tall but to be honest hasn't really had too much bullying / comments about it. I must admit my heart was in my mouth reading your post about what you went through. Fingers crossed that attitudes have changed a bit since our day!

lenalove · 25/10/2018 13:55

I hit my adult height (5ft6) at around 12, and haven't grown an inch since! She might have just had a very early spurt and will level off now/slow down growing?

Stupomax · 25/10/2018 14:00

My very tall DD's experience has been mostly positive. She literally is all legs with a short body, so buying trousers is her biggest challenge, but we've found good places to shop.

I think it bothered her briefly that she weighs more than her 'average' friends but her BMI is 21-22 so she's perfectly in proportion and does plenty of exercise (not netball or basketball but she's a lethal volleyball player).

CheeseTheDay · 25/10/2018 14:04

@BitOutOfPractice - I do think attitudes have changed, and something else that has changed, is that girls and women are (on average) taller these days, as a whole.

So while yes, our daughters are (probably) still the tallest, there are other 13-year old girls who are 5ft 8 to 5ft 11, so a girl the same age who is 6ft+ doesn't stand out as much. I look at the other girls in DD1's year, and I'm amazed at how many others are tall (even if not exceptionally) for their age, compared to how many had been when I was 13.

In my daughter's most recent year group photo, she's the only girl in the back row, but there are three girls in the second from back row, and a few in the next row from the back, and so on. In my Year 9 group photo, I'm the only girl in the back row, and then the next three rows from the back are all boys!!

To me, it's a clear indication of how things have changed!

areyoubeingserviced · 25/10/2018 14:09

I was 5ft 7 at nine and didn’t grow any more.
My dd16 is 5ft 9 which is a shock as my dh is only 5ft 8

dontalltalkatonce · 25/10/2018 14:11

Tall but fine! DD is that height at 13 and it's been steady growth with no big spurt so I'm wondering if she'll keep going some more.

AtticaRose · 25/10/2018 14:16

I was 5'6 and a half aged 11. Still am, 20 years later. I think my feet were at their full adult size when I was 9.

The two other girls who were the same size as me in year 7 both ended up over 6 foot! I just happened to be an early developer.

rosinavera · 25/10/2018 14:26

I was 5ft 10 by the time I was 14 and I absolutely hated it! My mum made things worse by always telling me that I was bigger than her and should be doing more to help. It was as if because I was tall I shouldn't expect to have a childhood. :-(

Frolick · 01/07/2021 01:08

It is because you're short

Animum2 · 01/07/2021 03:39

A friend of mines son was 6ft 4 by the age of 12, his dad is 6ft 7

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/07/2021 03:56

My daughter is 5'9" aged 12, with size 9 feet. Just hope her feet stop growing! She has always been around 99th centile but grew several inches in the last year or so as well as going through puberty, and now actually looks older than she is, which is harder for her to get her head around.

Aquamarine1029 · 01/07/2021 04:10

I was that height at her age. I'm 6' now and my 21 year old daughter is 6'1". What a lucky girl you have there. Being tall is absolutely wonderful.

Frolick · 05/07/2021 06:30

It is because you're short

StarryNight468 · 05/07/2021 06:39

My dd was always the tallest in her class at primary and towered above friends. She was a shoe size 6 in year 5, but then stopped growing apart from a slight bit taller and one shoe size bigger in yr 7. She wishes she was taller but I'm quite sure at 5ft 7 age 15 and a half, she isn't going to grow anymore.

Zerogravity · 05/07/2021 06:53

Were you searching for an old zombie thread about height because you were bursting to make this comment? Just curious!
