How scary is The Haunting of Hill House?

Is it 'hide behind your hands' scary, or 'don't want to be in the house alone' scary?

I'm terrified of watching horrors, but it seems to be everywhere!?

No spoilers please, and I'm mostly scared of demons and ghosts.

Gulp

😱

its scary scary had me jumping a few times boo

SausageOnAFork · 23/10/2018 17:15

Very. 6’4 DH literally jumped into my lap at one point!

It’s all perceived horror. There is no physical hurting, no blood and guts. It’s unsettling.

calpop · 23/10/2018 17:16

Im watching this, on ep3, and i dont think its that scary. Im letting my 13y old watch it and he's unmoved. Im not a big fan of horror, but Id say this is more of a psychological story type one. There's a couple of moderately gory scenes but the horrit buts have been standard haunted house so far, people's faces turning into screaming ghosts, but nothing like some of the films so far.

I think its a bit upsetting with a theme of mental illness and tragedy.

DisMember · 23/10/2018 17:18

Was wondering the same, dh isn’t keen on that genre so think I’d be watching alone.

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 23/10/2018 17:19

We didn't find it scary at all. Very atmospheric and the casting is good though.

Stellenbosch · 23/10/2018 19:33

I guess if a thirteen yr old can watch it, I can? 🤔👹👿🙀

spacefighter · 23/10/2018 19:36

It's not scary at all just a good watch.

Magik1 · 23/10/2018 19:43

It’s scary, can be jumpy sometimes but mostly atmospheric and eery. Don’t be like me and watch it late in the evening, I’ve had unsettled dreams Confused

bumblenbean · 23/10/2018 19:46

I don’t think it’s scary at all really, although probably would be for a young teen. There are some fairly adult themes though eg drugs, mental illness etc

NoTeaForMe · 23/10/2018 19:48

I’ve only watched the first episode so far. It’s very atmospheric and I’m on edge the whole way through. Feel like I’m waiting for something all the time. I have had my hand over my face a few times and held on tight to my husband. I haven’t watched a horror in years so maybe I’ve forgotten the feeling a bit!

Novasglow · 23/10/2018 19:51

There's a few jump scares but nowhere near what I was expecting. It's definitely not as scary as it's made out to be. Bloody brilliant though!

EdWinchester · 23/10/2018 19:51

I didn’t find it scary but my husband did 🤔

There are several scenes that try to make you jump.

We’ve finished it now - it was very good.

Tryingtoswallow101 · 23/10/2018 20:13

It’s not scary, there is a couple of jump scares but other than that it’s just a very very good story.

I absolutely sobbed at the end of it though but no one else appears to have done so. In fact the next day I was talking to DH about it and started to sob all over again just talking about the bit that upset me Grin

WhoWants2Know · 23/10/2018 20:13

I started another thread on this in Telly Addicts. It has several jump scares, but it's mostly not too gory. I'm a wimp and I loved it.

WhoWants2Know · 23/10/2018 20:16

That's true, the family's story is more heartbreaking than scary.

mummabubs · 23/10/2018 20:23

I'm like you OP and currently on episode 5 with my husband and sister.... my way of getting through it is watching behind a cushion and looking up each episode synopsis before watching 😂😂😂 It is a really good series (Horror aside!) so I want to keep watching it!

ShesABelter · 23/10/2018 20:24

I thought it was complete nonsense..watched to the end of the second one and it's so ridiculous we aren't watching anymore.

I'm quite jumpy and it just made me roll my eyes at some bits.

BentNeckLady · 23/10/2018 20:28

I found the first 2 episodes quite scary but after that it was ok. I’m not one for scary tv generally though.

cantthinkofanythingwitty · 23/10/2018 20:31

I think it's more creepy than scary. Watching it in the dark makes it more so, just watching during the day. I've got to say, it didn't make me jump once and I'm a jumpy person.

I really enjoyed it

Shehz21 · 23/10/2018 20:46

It's not as scary as it's made out to be but it is a bloody brilliant series!Absolutely enjoyed each and every episode Halloween Grin

NicoAndTheNiners · 23/10/2018 20:48

I’m finding it quite scary when I’m watching it but it’s not making me scared to be home alone after I’ve finished watching it if that makes sense.

Wallflowerfire · 23/10/2018 21:01

It is scary. Jump scares and sort of sadness and dread when you realise certain things. I seriously am scared of what might be lurking when I turn out the light when I go to bed now. Had to watch through my jumper on some bits!!!
Ps I am a scaredy-cat though.

BigStripeyBastard · 23/10/2018 21:02

I finished it yesterday. It was very good, I enjoyed it but it's not that scary. It's rather bizarrely got quite a nice ending, which I wasn't expecting.

gamerchick · 23/10/2018 21:04

It's not scary, I was most disappointed with the hype.

However I am enjoying watching it so it's watchable once. Not a rewatch though.
