Anyone have any suggestions of what to do in Bruges?

Hello - we're going to Bruges with 2 DCs (9 and 11). Does anyone have any brilliant suggestions? We're thinking walking, maybe a river cruise?
Many thanks

Canal tour is pretty good / ubiquitous.
There's loads of chocolatiers they can try.
Loads of Abbey beers you can try.
Moule and frits all round

DerRosenkavelier · 23/10/2018 20:19

It sounds lovely!

Drink beer. Eat Moules Frit. Enjoy!

Torture Museum
Diamond Museum
Beer Museum just off the main square has a fab interactive tour which has a kids option
Canal cruise
Tour via horse and carriage
Brewery tours

Don't go to the chocolate museum. It's absolutely crap. My ds (13) enjoyed the torture museum. I liked the Dali museum, the Groeningemuseum, and walking around the windmills at sunrise.
River tour is a must. Walk all around the city and go for hot chocolate at the old chocolate house.

Beer, moulds frites, waffles, carbonnades and chocolate! ! !

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 23/10/2018 20:34

Buy chocolate

kissprudencekeith · 23/10/2018 20:36

Get the train to Gent and away from the coach tours

Littlejayx · 23/10/2018 20:37

Eat loads of chocolate, drink loads of beer and go ice skating in the square 💖

AdaColeman · 23/10/2018 20:41

You must try waffles, Chez Albert is good.

Children might like the Volkskundemuseum, old shops, schoolroom etc.

Have a wonderful time!

Pieceofpurplesky · 23/10/2018 20:59

People watch with a beer after doing a walking tour that included chocolate.

Fieau · 23/10/2018 21:03

definitely go to The Old Chocolate House for a hot chocolate (and a waffle) the kids will love it. You get a big mug of hot milk and select your type of hot chocolate from a very large menu, the chocolate comes out as little chocolate chips in a chocolate cup. You drop the whole thing in your milk and whisk it. Absolutely delicious hot chocolate and a nice fun experience.

Some precious posters said don't go to the chocolate museum.... I disagree. There's free chocolate dispensers by the exhibits.... What's not to love Grin

Don't bother with the museum in the main square though. Absolutely random and not what I was expecting at all (think it's called the historium)

Fieau · 23/10/2018 21:03

Previous not precious sorry haha

Headfullofdreams · 23/10/2018 21:11

Beer, chips and mayonnaise, chocolate - really healthy weekend! 😂

ChiantiAndTruffles · 23/10/2018 21:18

Watch the In Bruges film before you go. Maybe not with the kids though😁

youngestisapsycho · 23/10/2018 21:43

We went last month... the boat trip was great but think they stop in November?

ineedaholidaynow · 23/10/2018 21:55

We went quite a few years ago pre DC. One thing I wouldn't recommend a museum, I think it's the Groeningemuseum. It is full of pictures of medieval torture of saints.

Would recommend chocolate, waffles, moules frites and the canal trip

HawkeyeInConfusion · 23/10/2018 22:02

Drink beer, eat chocolate and dame blanche.

GinandGingerBeer · 23/10/2018 22:02

Ha! I was just going to say the same thing @ChiantiAndTruffles Grin
Don't do what they did Wink

tinytemper66 · 23/10/2018 22:08

I am goi h next week and I am just looking forward to wandering around the streets. Lots of chocolate shops; looking forward to hot chocolate 🍫 and waffles.

ChiantiAndTruffles · 23/10/2018 22:09

@GinandGingerBeer** Tis like a fucking fairytale

GinandGingerBeer · 23/10/2018 22:09

Oh and the other thing not to do in Bruges is get the over night ferry Saturday night, get shit faced, dance In a weird 'to the left to the left' fashion in cheesy ferry disco while the ferry lurches across the north sea, arrive in Brussels 8am Sunday morning to find it shut until 11am, freeze your knackers off while spending €30 on coffee, sail back that night, (see above but the dancing is to the right to the right) and find out your sister thought we'd been to France Grin

I'm sure your experience will be far more cultured than mine was.

Racecardriver · 23/10/2018 22:18

When I was there I went to this really awesome tiny restaurant that only offer two dishes a night reccomended by a local. I can’t remember the name but the food was great, prices very low and atmosphere was great.

Heratnumber7 · 24/10/2018 19:35

If you like noodles I can highly recommend the Marco Polo Noodle Bar. Small, but v good food.

Bigheadache · 24/10/2018 19:47

Ha I'm going there on a coach tour soon for a day/night Grin will look at some of this to make the most of it

queribus · 24/10/2018 19:52

Great restaurant called Ribs n Beer. Does what it says, kid friendly. Book, especially at a weekend. Walking outside the city walla is nice. Beer museum is ok.
