Obscure songs

I was in the kitchen earlier chatting with dc when I got a random song in my head. So then I start singing it only for my son to look at me like I'd gone mad.

The song was Peaches by The Presidents of the United States of America.

It goes "Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches. Movin' to the country, gonna eat me a lot of peaches."

I seem to recall it came out in the mid-90s.

Let's play a game of what obscure songs do people remember 😊

Uptown Uptempo Woman by Randy Edelman. Criminally ignored in the UK on release in 1976.

Swing Your Daddy by Jim Gilstrap. A top ten hit in 1975 from a former Stevie Wonder backing singer.

Hello, This Is Joanie by Paul Evans, 1978. Catchy but weird subject matter.

Spongeface · 23/10/2018 13:58

@TalkInRiddles yes!!! Oh my goodness yes how on earth did you get it! You are a genius! Have been looking for it for actually years! And it's just as good as I remember. Huge points to you that's brilliant!

Spongeface · 23/10/2018 14:05

@TalkInRiddles can't tell you how chuffed I am! And they are just three wee lads Grin

Spongeface · 23/10/2018 14:09

Confused it's not about bingo at all! It's about the red light district!!! Blush

TalkInRiddles · 23/10/2018 14:13

Hehe I just googled some of the lyrics you posted and thatsvwhat came up 😁 I just watched the video. So 90s!! I really have never heard this song before. The lead singer looks a bit kooky 😂

Telephone Man by Meri Wilson. 8 year old me used to happily sing along when it came out in 1977. It took AGES for the penny to drop that she probably wasn't talking about getting a nice trimphone from him...

Bamaluz · 23/10/2018 14:29

When I first heard Drake's Hotline Bling I noticed a sample of an old song but couldn't place it and googling got me nowhere. It was on a television programme recently so I googled it - Why Can't We live Together by Timmy Thomas, 1973. Sorted!

rightreckoner · 23/10/2018 15:09

indigo I know all yours. And the Telephone Man song. Would also add, in a similar vein Car 67 by Driver 67 about a taxi driver who wouldn’t do a pickup. Anyone remember that one ? Seem to recall it was in a Brummie accent.

IndigoSpritz · 23/10/2018 15:53

rightreckoner - I do know Driver 67 - Car 67. It was the first record I bought, in December 1978 ! The B-side is even better.

rightreckoner · 23/10/2018 16:32

We must be of an age Grin
Another novelty 70s number - You’re Moving Out Today - Carol Bayer Seger.

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 23/10/2018 16:55

I remember Car 67 and Moving Out Today 😄

'Pack up your rubber duck, I'd like to wish you luck'....

rightreckoner · 23/10/2018 17:14

I love a list song. Ian Dury and Chaz and Dave did these brilliantly.

TheIncredibleBookEatingManchot · 23/10/2018 17:19

Kewpies Like Watermelons by Urasei Yatsura.

Taxi Headbutt by Tampasm. It's only just occurred to me that their name is probably a deliberate combination of tampon and orgasm. Confused

Does anyone remember that band Bis? They had two singers, one was a woman with a very squealy voice. They had a song that I think was called Icky Poo Air Raid that had the line "the girls at school all love Take That and Mark Owen is the name of the cat, is the name of the cat."

IndigoSpritz · 23/10/2018 17:19

I vaguely remember CBS performing You're Moving Out Today on TOTP (I was six). Seeing the footage later made me realise she was a great songwriter but a cringeworthy performer. I do like that song though.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 23/10/2018 17:23

OMG I remember that song from my childhood, and I’ve never been able to find out who sings it!! Thank you!!

MrsTommyBanks · 23/10/2018 17:27

I love this....planning on having it st my funeral

t00dle00 · 23/10/2018 17:29

Spaceman can't remember who sang it but it popped into my head last week.

CarryOnScreamingValenta · 23/10/2018 17:37

I remember the peaches song! Also Car 67 and Moving Out Today.

'Controller have mercy on me, I don't wanna do the pick up at number 83. The girl of my dreams left me all alone, number 83 is where she made her home'

Here's a good one:

notacooldad · 23/10/2018 17:40

iklboogiemanunderthebed · 23/10/2018 17:41

@t00dle00 - Babylon Zoo sang Spaceman

Auldspinster · 23/10/2018 17:43

Kill the sexplayer- Girls Against Boys

MissionItsPossible · 23/10/2018 18:02

My favourite band, Jack off Jill had some obscure lyrics.

My cat is amazing
He can play the guitar
He may not be an actor
But he's a pussy superstar

and also

They do not understand
They are afraid of me
They'd rather shoot themselves
Than french kiss the elderly

BayTrees · 23/10/2018 19:13

Wow. Someone else knows Gee Mr Tracy. I remember trying to buy Lava Man 7" in a shop which had the sleeve but couldn't find it. I loved indie/alternative/goth/punk so most of my vinyl is obscure
Loved the Sugar cubes, saw them live. Still seriously love The Very Things. Currently watching CarSOS on TV. One of the presenters was a drummer in Pop Will Eat Itself though I think when they were dancey instead of indie.

BayTrees · 23/10/2018 19:16

How could I forget early Half Man Half Biscuit.
Did you ever wander how you get triangles from a cow? You need butter, milk and cheese and an equilateral chainsaw..

DoctorTwo · 23/10/2018 21:47

@BayTrees

In debt I owe someone a fiver,
maybe I should try my hand at brag,
James Dean was just a careless driver,
and Marilyn Monroe was just a slag.
