Worst 'tourist' places you've visited

A little inspired by the school trips thread but I have been thinking about the worst places I've visited in pursuit of leisure. Disclaimer-sorry if you live there/love it. These are not anything other than my experience on that day/time.

There was the time I took a group of patients for a nice country stroll, which turned out to be a lay-by off an A-Road.

Or going on holiday to a small town near Gainsborough and realising that there was nothing to do, at all. We were there for a week!

Amsterdam was very pretty I was there the other day, I agree though, less of the souvenir shops and touristy tacky vibe and you'd be flying. The red light district is so artificial and tourist trap. I still loved the city tho, just rather more authentic.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 21:47

Isle of Wight...rained the whole first week
Sun shone second week...it was a bit better
Failed to see what everyone got excited about
Was over 30 years ago...so maybe has improved a bit
Blackgang chine..what was that about?

cupofteaandcake · 16/10/2018 21:48

Indonesia, was due to spend a few weeks there but paid to fly out of Yogyakarta. Went to a few islands, couldn't wait to leave.

The height of tackiness

greendale17 · 16/10/2018 21:49

New York- expensive, overrated and not very friendly

QueenOfMyWorld · 16/10/2018 21:50

Benalmedena in Spain.Marmaris in Turkey

ilovesooty · 16/10/2018 21:52

I hate the Lake District as well.

I loathed Dublin when I went there for a weekend.

BlackFingers · 16/10/2018 21:53

Cheddar Gorge. Amazing caves and scenery but like a purpose built tourist town. Odd vibe.

Completely agree.

Puerto Angel in Mexico - made the mistake of trusting the Lonely Planet.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 21:54

What was wrong with Indonesia cup of tea

RachelRosie · 16/10/2018 21:54

Agree Albuferia and Bangkok.

Albuferia was a just a warm Newquay, the strip was awful!

We visited Bangkok at the end of our trip after a fantastic week in Phitsanulok. It was too hectic with tuk tuk drivers trying to rip you off and moody backpackers. We started feeling ill when we started eating the Western food again.

Rural Thailand is so much more friendly and a completely different experience.

Also Prague, was OK. But we went to Budapest the year before and loved it so had set high expectations that Prague just didn't meet. The astronomical clock was such a big let down.

Absolutely disagree about Amsterdam though, we love how relaxed it is there and there is so much to do. The Netherlands has amazing transport links and its one of our favourite countries to visit.

Sao Paulo. Grimy muggy shitbox

Summerbabygirl · 16/10/2018 22:01

We went to Cornwall when the beast from the east happened.. we weren’t expecting such cold weather that time of year. Whilst I usually love Cornwall it was so depressing, it was -2 so couldn’t face a beach walk. There’s nothing to do in Cornwall when cold except for eat. We did go to an Owl sanctuary one day though which was the highlight of that trip.

Malta was horrendous. Stank of wee, terrible food. We ate in Pizza Hut 7 nights in a row because everything else was inedible. We got stuck in an open top bus in 30oc heat with leather seats on a tour to nowhere, they’d drop you off for hours and there was nothing to see! Still look back on it fondly though as it was our first holiday together. Grin

Cairo & the pyramids, utterly, utterly, beyond filthy.

Agree with Kuta in Bali, like an absolutely boiling hot Blackpool!

Waltzing Waters is closed now...sorry to burst anyone's bubble that was hoping to visit!

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I've just been remember it all over again. It's really quite pretty - they shoot these jets of water around and shines pretty coloured lights through them.

And play music that's vaguely water-related, but nothing too taxing for the audience. So think, Crying by Roy Orbison. So when the music swells, so do the water jets.

I wonder if it's on Youtube?

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 16/10/2018 22:02

Have I got low standards? I had a great time in Amsterdam, we kept well away from the red light district though. Been to Prague twice and kept away from the main boozy tourist spots, there were lots of other fab places to go. Loved Hong Kong and the nightlife, but was with a friend who lives there and knows the good places.

Blackpool is shit though.

Summerbabygirl · 16/10/2018 22:04

Greendale I don’t think New York could ever be overrated. I loved everything about it, even road signs and seeing NYPD was cool. It is like being in a movie. Smile

calpop · 16/10/2018 22:05

Has anyone said Lands End? Land's End is so shit and tacky, such a waste of an amazing location.

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/10/2018 22:06

It is!!!

I'd forgotten the voiceover with the inspirational helpful commentary and "facts". Don't forget to listen with sound!

I hope this link works.

There's loads on Youtube!

Dowser · 16/10/2018 22:06

Didn’t the beast from the east come around March?
Bit early for Cornwall I would’ve thought.
You need good weather most places.
I was even a bit glum in Florida when it rained

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/10/2018 22:07

and the trouble when you're laughing that hard and all this water is gushing around is that it REALLY makes you need to pee!

Summerbabygirl · 16/10/2018 22:07

Yeah it was March, we should have known better really but didn’t expect it to be quite so cold!

dontcallmelen · 16/10/2018 22:08

Cape Verde never seen so many flies, we had a ground floor room with balcony apparently there were plants/flowers but you couldn’t see them due the sheer amount of flies, the beach though beautiful was like sitting in a wind tunnel, we erected a windbreak with sun loungers but you still had a mouthful of sand every time you sat up or moved, we gave up on the beach & tried sitting by the pool & had a mini tornado which lifted up the loungers & brollys, got whacked on the head by a flying table.
Dining outside was virtually impossible due to the wind & flies, the only place I have ever been to that I wanted to cut short our stay.
Yy Bangkok constantly being hassled & scammed.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 22:08

You’re the first with lands end calzpop

Can’t be worse than Gretna or mont st michel

KeepServingTheDrinks · 16/10/2018 22:08
