Worst 'tourist' places you've visited

A little inspired by the school trips thread but I have been thinking about the worst places I've visited in pursuit of leisure. Disclaimer-sorry if you live there/love it. These are not anything other than my experience on that day/time.

There was the time I took a group of patients for a nice country stroll, which turned out to be a lay-by off an A-Road.

Or going on holiday to a small town near Gainsborough and realising that there was nothing to do, at all. We were there for a week!

Oh god yes, Monaco was hot, crowded and I left disappointed at how unglamorous it was. Cannes, however was gorgeous.

Stonehenge was disappointing but I think I'd had in my head it was going to be bigger than it is, so that's my fault!!

LikeARedBalloon · 16/10/2018 21:15

Waltzing Waters is closed now...sorry to burst anyone's bubble that was hoping to visit! 😂😂

OatsBeansBarley · 16/10/2018 21:16

Amsterdam was bad because I was at the main railway station for hours until 11 pm iirc on my own waiting for my boyfriend to turn up. Dodgy, but then it would be wouldn't it!

The Epcot Center in Florida.

Tacky, dated, shabby and actually totally cringeworthy.

It was my idea to waste spend a day of our holiday there and I've never lived it down.

To this day making a crap decision is known as 'doing an Epcot' in our house.

Miss marple..at least you got to set foot in Monaco...unlike us and you couldn’t have parked a credit card ..anywhere
Cannes..yes was lovely..and we took the train to ventimiglia in Italy and the ride was stunning...and got to see Monaco from a better viewpoint

While I love Kissimmee..I’m not keen on Orlando...and if you wander into north Orlando it just has a menacing air
North orange st..I believe

LizzieBennettDarcy · 16/10/2018 21:22

I was cripplingly disappointed with Prague. Such a beautiful city with amazing architecture. Completely spoiled by tourist tat. Shop after shop selling utter utter crap, segues and people selling segue rides harassing you on every corner, and full of bars equally full of drunks. It was just so so tacky I could have cried. I would have loved to have gone there 20 years ago.

IJustLostTheGame · 16/10/2018 21:24

Marmaris in Turkey. McDonald's, fishbowl cocktails, shit clubs, drunk people fighting at 3am. It was my idea of hell.
The locals were lovely and told us nice places to go when they realised we weren't there to get wasted and sunburnt.
We did some lovely day trips out. I will never forget the beauty of Efes and the taste of Turkish chicken casserole thing.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 21:25

Haven’t been to Epcot for at least ten years ...it’s just a big shopping place and restaurants..thatcwas then
Amazed it hasn’t had a facelift because it needed one

Universal wipes the spots off Disney anyway

RedDwarves · 16/10/2018 21:26

I hated Bath.

Cold, bleak, architecture too samey (I know that this is intentional, but it's still bland), not impressed by the Roman baths. Some of the towns surrounding it were much nicer, but, on the whole, I wouldn't make the effort to visit again if I went back to the UK.

OatsBeansBarley · 16/10/2018 21:27

Prague - it was ok extremely early in the morning.

MawkishTwaddle · 16/10/2018 21:28

Dowser what makes it worse is that we were staying at Universal Studios.

Epcot was our 'Disney Day'.

MawkishTwaddle · 16/10/2018 21:29

Bath I found filthy and full of bus fumes.

The last time I went to Edinburgh I was disappointed by how tacky and run-down it's become. York is going the same way, too.

alfiesmam · 16/10/2018 21:30

Madrid : filthy & homeless everywhere

Venus : smelly , boring & a rip off

OatsBeansBarley · 16/10/2018 21:30

I agree about Bath. I'd not rush back.

I went to Epcot and enjoyed the cheesiness and evening firework display!

Bombaybunty · 16/10/2018 21:30

Jamaica. We were offered drugs before we'd left the airport.
Constant hassling from dealers, very oppressive.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 21:34

Aww mawkish

Surprised to see Bath there. I quite liked it as a city. Blooming expensive though..Travelodge wanted £250 for a weekend last year for a wedding
No chance

Sadik · 16/10/2018 21:37

A trip to visit the castles on the Rhine with ex-H when we'd just left uni.

We were inter-railing, and had planned to spend at least 2 weeks of our month in Germany drinking beer and appreciating castles. In July, so one might expect reasonable weather for camping.

It rained so, so, so much - we looked at the long range weather forecast and hopped a train to Italy instead. Very nice holiday, but I've still never seen the castles on the Rhine and I'm nearly 50! (TBF I think it was freak weather, and I'm sure the Rhine is actually very nice)

AnnDerry · 16/10/2018 21:41

I too loved the Waltzing Waters.
The highlight was the hits of RIcky Martin. In Spanish (is there a big Spanish speaking population on the IoW?)
DC and I had the best afternoon there. We sang along, and laughed, and clapped. Excellent value entertainment.

I hesitate to say the following but.... the Lake District.
I just hate the whole area. It's overrun with braying tourists, and the roads are permanently snarled up with bloody Landrovers, plus I actually find the landscapes somewhat oppressive and threatening in some way I can't quite explain. I always feel as though I've escaped from something when we leave. And it's damp.

borntobequiet · 16/10/2018 21:43

Ah Venus. Well what do you expect.
Mars. Red and boring.

Dowser · 16/10/2018 21:44

Ah, love the lakes..had a brilliant weekend last December
Weather first class. Sun shone the whole time
Barely a land rover in sight😂

ProudThrilledHappy · 16/10/2018 21:45

Legoland. Utter shite.

LaurieFairyCake · 16/10/2018 21:45

I used to love Paris and New York before I lived in London.

London's just so much better.

I've made a list of all the places not to visit off the back of this thread. I don't think I've had a desire to visit anywhere mentioned apart from Bath.

I found New Orleans really threatening. Felt really unsafe walking around, wouldn't go back.

E20mom · 16/10/2018 21:46

Oh I have the same list as @TattooUndo!

elephantoverthehill · 16/10/2018 21:46

KeepServingTheDrinks I came on to tell you that Waltzing Waters is no more but I see I have been pipped to the post. I've managed to avoid for 20 years and now it's gone, gone, gone.
