Worst 'tourist' places you've visited

A little inspired by the school trips thread but I have been thinking about the worst places I've visited in pursuit of leisure. Disclaimer-sorry if you live there/love it. These are not anything other than my experience on that day/time.

There was the time I took a group of patients for a nice country stroll, which turned out to be a lay-by off an A-Road.

Or going on holiday to a small town near Gainsborough and realising that there was nothing to do, at all. We were there for a week!

It makes me laugh so much!

Dowser · 16/10/2018 22:14

This thread reminds me why we come to Tenerife three times in the winter
We know what to expect so not disappointed
We come for the sun..and to escape chilly Britain ..so not disappointed
Husband comes to swim in the sea...again not disappointed
I come to see my Russian osteopath ..again..all good

Naples - felt very threatening.
Lanzarote - shit hole except for the volcano bit.
Tenerife - shit hole. Full of English eating English food and getting pissed. What's the point??!
The Lake District - boring and wet.

OatsBeansBarley · 16/10/2018 22:17

I really didn't like San Francisco.

Petalflowers · 16/10/2018 22:18

LandS End - too touristy, and not even good touristy

Eden Project - okay if you like gardens, but that’s it. Found it boring.

Love Amsterdam

FrankiesKnuckle · 16/10/2018 22:19

Koh Samui Thailand.
20+ years ago, it was a lovely island although quite popular.

4 years ago and it has been turned into an air conditioned pile of shit.
Dirty beach, Dirty sea.
The strip behind Chaweng beach is tat after tat with the added 'bonus' of an air conditioned shopping mall, the obligatory A/C starbucks, KFC etc

It's supposed to be a bloody island paradise!

But Bangkok i love, you expect it to be grimy and it is.

Also love Lake Garda, we did honeymoon in a quiet part though 😉

Sarahlou63 · 16/10/2018 22:22

Lanzarote. Just so boring, small and totally forgettable

BillywigSting · 16/10/2018 22:22

Benidorm.

Got dragged there by a friend in my early 20s in the depths of winter. Was utterly grim.

Groups of pissed lads everywhere, people dry humping on the dancefloors. Horrible food.

Got flashed by a group of men on our second night and the police didn't give a fuck.

The whole thing was seedy and tacky and you couldn't pay me to go back there.

The only redeeming feature was I managed to get some very nice red wine for cheap

meeadfelloff · 16/10/2018 22:25

Mbb1 yes! The Eden Project was pants.
I went with my sister, mum and late father on a coach trip. When we got back on the bus the driver said to dad 'Did you have a good day?' To which dad replied in his broad Yorkshire accent 'No, it were fookin' shite'. Grin

MistyMeena · 16/10/2018 22:27

Casablanca. Blackpool. Quite similar although at least Morocco was warm.

BestIsWest · 16/10/2018 22:29

Not been to Waltzing Waters but I remember Alton Towers having something very similar in about 1983.
We also pissed ourselves laughing.

t00dle00 · 16/10/2018 22:30

Marmaris
Gran Canaria
Malta
Fuerteventura

mycatplotsdeath · 16/10/2018 22:30

@calpop oia is beautiful at about 7 am, once the cruise ships arrive it is horrendous.
You literally can not move. You need to sit on a wall for 3 hours before the sunset just to get a spot.
Then it takes forever to get out as it's narrow paths and thousands of people.

Beautiful but total effort

Potatoandleeek · 16/10/2018 22:32

Bruges.

Awful food and miserable locals. We struggled to fill two days.

vampirethriller · 16/10/2018 22:32

West highlands of Scotland. Cold, wet and very boring unless you like doing sports in the rain. Or looking at wet mountains. My sister actually goes to Oban on purpose which makes me think I should go NC with her. (no offence to anyone who lives there.)

MissesBloom · 16/10/2018 22:34

Another vote for marrakech, never been to a bigger shit hole in my entire life.

They treat women like dirt. They know you're not local and basically hound you permanently.

I remember women following me with stools, leaping in front of me and sitting down with lightening speed. Theyd get hold of my hands and arms in a vice like grip so that they could quickly start a henna a tattoo despite me refusing over and over. Once they start doing the tattoo they can then try and force you to pay and say you're stealing from them. Ine lady scratched me quite badly in an attempt to stop me walking away.

The men leer and taunt you at every turn. The place stank like a sewer. We went as part of a large group and the rest had booked onto a tour up the mountains. We refused to go but the rest of the group came back and said they'd basically gotten up some of the way and were taken to a local house to sample some traditional tea. they were then locked in, kept there for hours and forced to pay a contribution out of respect for the owner. We thankfully only stayed a few days but I couldn't get home quick enough.

Uk: Great yarmouth...I'd gladly never return, basically felt like walking through Jeremy Kyle's waiting room

St Ives Sad I love the rest of Cornwall but st Ives just doesn't have any charm left for me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/10/2018 22:34

Ayers rock/Uluru, and that was back when you could climb it or walk round the base,
Apparently you can't do either now.
Kings canyon on the way there was better.

nancy75 · 16/10/2018 22:35

Malta - the whole island! Miserable people, terrible driving & horrible food.

Paris - I liked Paris but it’s the only place I’ve ever felt really unsafe ( I grew up in a rough part of South East London so it takes a lot for me to feel edgy!)

Dragonlight · 16/10/2018 22:36

Agree with Paris. Smelly, filthy and traffic everywhere. Our hotel was dirty (think used tissues and cotton buds in the sink) and appalling food and service. The art is beautiful though and the pastries delicious.

BestIsWest · 16/10/2018 22:36

I was underwhelmed by Vancouver - lots of homeless and much of the city was just like any other soulless high rise place. The surroundings are stunning though.

OatsBeansBarley · 16/10/2018 22:40

My dh went to Marrakech, got badly hassled and has told me not to bother. He said it was lovely up in the Atlas Mountains.

This made me laugh. I had to go there recently overnight on business, believe it or not, and this was my exact impression. I had an American colleague with me on his first visit to the UK. He was bemused. When we arrived at the train station 2 construction workers working on the road outside the station were having a massive barney shouting at each other across a dual carriageway "you shagged er I'm going to fucking kill ya", "No I didn't she's my cousin". No word of a lie, it was exactly like the K
JK show (apologies to anyone that lives there)

Oia - ah, get it thanks, I'll only go when im a multimillionaire and can afford a hotel with prime views.

user1484830599 · 16/10/2018 22:42

Another vote for Malta. Miserable, rude people and nothing to do.

I was stuck in a crappy resort for 2 weeks (I am not a pool/beach person). There were no pavements so couldn't walk anywhere, buses were so crowded and I was nearly knocked flying holding my baby and a pushchair while people shoved me out the way to get on.

There was no sense of family friendliness either, we'd ask for a highchair in restaurants and they'd just shrug and say they didn't have one. I've never been so pleased to get back to the airport to come home.
