Worst 'tourist' places you've visited

A little inspired by the school trips thread but I have been thinking about the worst places I've visited in pursuit of leisure. Disclaimer-sorry if you live there/love it. These are not anything other than my experience on that day/time.

There was the time I took a group of patients for a nice country stroll, which turned out to be a lay-by off an A-Road.

Or going on holiday to a small town near Gainsborough and realising that there was nothing to do, at all. We were there for a week!

Venice as a child.

I'd got it confused with something I saw on John Craven's Newsround (Burma?) and was expecting houses on stilts and to boat everywhere. I was not impressed by the amount of walking, nor the state of disrepair of the general buildings.

Luckily it was only a day trip from where we were staying.

Eden project - there's a day of my life I'll never get back

Magik1 · 16/10/2018 18:59

Bangkok, dirty , grimy and taxi drivers always trying to rip you off. I’ve been to a few places and have never said I woukd never return to any of them except this place. Avoid avoid. Sad

Cheddar Gorge. Amazing caves and scenery but like a purpose built tourist town. Odd vibe.

wizzywig · 16/10/2018 19:01

Dubai. Utterly bored. It was like costa del milton keynes

Jeippinghmip · 16/10/2018 19:02

Agree about the Eden Project,. I didn’t enjoy Lanzarote at all, quite boring.

GreyGardens88 · 16/10/2018 19:03

Why on earth did you book 2 weeks in one city, you'd get bored in any city visiting it for that length of time. Did you not plan what you were going to do for 2 weeks before you arrived? Very odd Hmm

ThunderOnlyHappens · 16/10/2018 19:03

I can't fathom how Dubai isn't anything but a giant shopping centre with hotels? Unless I am missing the point entirely possible

Leicester Square.

MsOliphant · 16/10/2018 19:08

Stockholm.

I don’t get it. It didn’t have that cool vibe I imagined. It was boring.

The Nobel prize museum was closed.

I didn’t like the overly strict drink laws either- I was on holiday after all. Felt like prohibition.

Ridiculously expensive, and I live in London.

RedPandaMama · 16/10/2018 19:09

Another one for Amsterdam. Expensive, hideously busy, huge groups of creepy 40+ men leering at the women in the red light districts, and the BIKES OH MY GOD almost got run over 200 times. Such a let down.

Kazzyhoward · 16/10/2018 19:10

Mombassa, Kenya. Never set foot in such a hell hole before or after. Stuck in a supposedly 5 start hotel which had constant power cuts and no running water. Never feared for my life on holiday before. Locals walking around openly with knives and machetes. Security guards with automatic weapons patrolling the beaches and hotel entry gate. Disgusting food - we spent most of the time sat on the loo - not good when there's no water to flush it!

ClashCityRocker · 16/10/2018 19:10

Gretna Green for me. I'm sure it was romantic once.

Now it's a tourist filled shopping center.

huggybear · 16/10/2018 19:12

Paris, everyone was so rude and it's nothing special. London is much better and that's saying something on the friendliness scale.

Friolero · 16/10/2018 19:12

Surfers Paradise.

I've been to lots of places in Australia and loved 99% of them, but Surfers Paradise was not one of them. Awful place, unless it's changed in the last 15 years.

FogCutter · 16/10/2018 19:14

Agree with previous poster about Lake Garda, it was not the beautiful experience we were hoping for either!

Absolutely heaving with tourists, the most un-Italian shops and restaurants catering to brits and Germans and the place absolutely stunk.

1000antsinmypants · 16/10/2018 19:18

Canberra. Everything shuts at 5, couldn’t get food, never mind a drink.
Luckily we were just passing through.

Iwantplaits · 16/10/2018 19:18

Grange over Sands

I begged DP to get us out of there after 15mins but he said we'd paid for 4 hrs parking.

Everyone was eating pies in a car park. And that was the liveliest thing about the place.

We left after 1 hour.
Oh and there isn't a grain of sand.

Ironfloor269 · 16/10/2018 19:18

Melbourne. Utter, utter shithole.

Needallthesleep · 16/10/2018 19:19

Sorrento and Santorini. Both just full of cruise ship passengers

Madbengalmum · 16/10/2018 19:19

Bulgaria, all of it
Los Angeles
Albania, all of it
Paris

confusedmomm · 16/10/2018 19:20

Amsterdam. Didn't feel safe in the evening.
Marseille - very dirty

CatherineCawood · 16/10/2018 19:21

Popeye Land in Malta circa 2008. Utter utter shite. Fly infested restaurant, run down grim shite with depressed or angry staff. Ugh.

offtheshoulder · 16/10/2018 19:22

I loved Lake Garda, won't hear a word against it.

DappledThings · 16/10/2018 19:24

Pangkor Laut Island. Off Malaysia. The whole tiny island is one resort and you are marooned there. Meant to be luxurious and it's nice but I've never been anywhere you couldn't leave. Nothing to do but lie on the beach and full of honeymooners.
